Ladies and gentlemen, he was the incomparable band leader on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson for 30 years. Here's the thing about "The Tonight Show", and Doc Severinsen. There wasn't YouTube. There wasn't even cable. He had to go through it first to build the foundation. Doc Severinsen defined what we do. (trumpet music) I've always wanted to play the trumpet, and I always liked playing it loud. -

They were the three most well-known people in America. We have got on this show the greatest trumpeter in the world and our orchestra. (upbeat music) Those musicians were the best of the best. That band is kicking ass. And Doc would just blast that horn. Anybody bleed? His wardrobe was as important as any guest that was ever on the show. Those clothes he wears- - What is that? Those things weigh 40 pounds. I'm being used to keep that peacock sexually stimulated. (audience laughing) Performing at 92 years old, it's just unheard of. Of the trumpet players, he's the Michael Jordan. -
Doc
I still go to the gym three days a week. He will play as long as he can. How do you like this outfit, girls? Part of the commitment is when you learn something, you pass it on. The happy people are the lucky people. Be happy. I just love what I do. The best I could say about myself is I might be a work in progress. (trumpet music)
