Angie From on how experiences in teaching influences promoting student interest in math.

Angie From:
I know everybody that is here really enjoy teaching at Notre Dame — really enjoy it — and that's, the kids sense that. The kids know that. Like, "Miss, I don't want to let you down. I know I don't understand that right now. It's a change of mindset, but I know eventually I'm going to get it because I know you're going to support me. I know you're there for me after school, before school, during lunch." So they know that. And because of that, I think why, at their own ability levels, start rising. When I first started here at Notre Dame four years ago, they only had four kids in algebra. The following year two, they had nine. The third year I was here, they have 11. And like I said, this year we have 15. So, it's the connection from middle school, from the elementary coming here — fifth and sixth grade, Ms. Steinhower, you know — collaborate with me, preparing them to come to me. I just give 'em that extra push. And that's why we have so many kids that are really successful here at Notre Dame with regards to math. I just love kids. I love to teach. I've been, like I said, across the board, I've been at MPS, taught third grade, then I went to New Berlin Public Schools. I worked as a building sub at Muskego. I went to Messmer and I taught at Messmer for seventh and eighth grade as the same position that I have here. And then I came back to kind of, like, to my roots. Now, because I speak Spanish, I feel that I was able to use my two languages, and able to support the kids. The family and the parents really support me. Like I said, it's a combination — parents, students, administration and the wonderful resources we have here at Notre Dame — why I feel that I'm so successful.
