Kenosha Police shot a man Sunday evening, who has been taken by Flight for Life to a Milwaukee hospital in serious condition according to the department.

In a video published by the Kenosha News that reportedly describes the scene, a Black man was walking away from officers and entering a car as police fired at him.

Police say officers responded to a domestic incident around 5:11 Sunday evening. The Kenosha News reports the man who was shot appeared to be trying to break up a fight when the shooting occurred a little before 5:30.

According to Kenosha Police, sheriff’s deputies and state patrol officers were brought in to secure the scene and the state Department of Justice will head the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Protesters gathered in the wake of the shooting calling for justice.

Gov. Tony Evers responded to the shooting, saying he “stand[s] with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives.”

“I have said all along that although we must offer our empathy, equally important is our action. In the coming days, we will demand just that of elected officials in our state who have failed to recognize the racism in our state and our country for far too long.”

As protests erupted, Kenosha announced a curfew for the remainder of Sunday night.
