[audience cheers and applauds] - Corey Pompey: Good afternoon, everyone.
Thank you so much for joining us today.
This is a momentous occasion for us, celebrating our 50th Varsity Band concert.
[audience cheers] The first concert was in March 1975 in Mills Concert Hall.
We've come a long way.
Now we're here at the concert-- at the Kohl Center, and we hope that you have a good time.
So, that first song is a UW Band classic.
"The Horse," it was a hit back in 1968.
And a special person took over the program in 1969.
So, my thinking is that we've probably been playing "The Horse" at least that long.
This next one is from one of the greatest musicals of all time.
Certainly within the last 25 years.
I'm talking about Wicked.
[audience members cheer] Oh, got some Wicked fans over here, yay!
The music of Stephen Schwartz brought to life by two powerhouse vocalists, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.
And it was recently adapted into a couple of blockbuster movies starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
[audience cheers] Here is our take on Wicked.
[audience cheers and applauds] - Band members: Heey oh!
["No One Mourns the Wicked" by Stephen Schwartz] ["Popular" by Stephen Schwartz] ["Popular" by Stephen Schwartz] ["One Short Day" by Stephen Schwartz] ["One Short Day" by Stephen Schwartz] ["Defying Gravity" by Stephen Schwartz] ["Defying Gravity" by Stephen Schwartz] ["No Good Deed" by Stephen Schwartz] ["No Good Deed" by Stephen Schwartz] [cheers and applause] - Last September marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
So, we did a musical tribute to the Greatest Generation in observance of Veterans Day.
All of the tunes that we are about to play were popular during that time.
To help us perform this music, please welcome Miss Lindy Cashdollar along with the Mead Witter School of Music Trio.
On keys, Dr.
Dan Cavanagh, Director of the School of Music.
[band cheers] [indistinct band chatter] - On bass, Ben Ferris.
– Band members: [firework whistle] Ooh, ahh!
[indistinct] Dr.
Ben Ferris.
- And you already met our drummer, Dr.
Matthew Endres, on the kit.
[applause] This is Classics from the Greatest Generation.
– Band members: Heeey yah!
["In the Mood" by The Glenn Miller Orchestra] - Mr.
Whatchacallim, whatcha doin' tonight?
I hope you're in the mood because I'm feelin' just right How's about a corner with a table for two?
Where the music's mellow and some gay rendezvous There's no chance romancin' with a blue attitude You've got to do some dancin' to get in the mood Sister Whatchacallim, that's a timely idea Something swing-a-dilla would sound good to my ear Everybody's got to know that dancin' has charms Especially when you have a certain love in your arms Steppin' out with you would be a sweet interlude We're absolutely positively in the mood In the mood, that's it, I got it In the mood, your ear will spot it In the mood, oh, what a hot hit Be alive and get the jive, you've got to learn how Hep-hep-hep, hep like a hepper Pep-pep-pep, hot as a pepper Step-step-step, step like a stepper We're huggin', we're muggin', we're in the mood now [upbeat big band music] [jazzy piano music] [drum solo] [jazzy trio music] Mr.
Watchacallim, all you needed was fun Isn't it a wonder what an evening has done Your feet were so heavy that they hardly could move Now they're light as feathers and you're right in the groove Steppin' out with you had been a sweet interlude I'm positively, absolutley in the mood ["Chattanooga Choo Choo" by The Glenn Miller Orchestra] Hello railroad Pardon me boy, is that the Chattanooga choo choo?
Right on track 29 Boy, you can give me a shine Well, I can afford to board the Chattanooga choo choo I've, I've, I've got my fare And just a trifle to spare We leave the Pennsylvania station 'Round a quarter to four Read a magazine and then we're in Baltimore Dinner at the diner, nothing could be finer Than to have your ham and eggs in Carolina When you hear the whistle blowing eight to the bar Then you know that Tennessee is not very far Shovel all the coal in, gotta keep it rolling Choo, choo, Chattanooga, there you are [drum solo] There's gonna be a certain party at the station In satin and lace I used to call Funny Face When he cries, I'll tell him I'll never, ever roam Chattanooga choo choo Won't you choo choo me home?
["Don't Get Around Much Anymore" by The Duke Ellington Orchestra] [groovy jazz music] Missed the Saturday dance Heard they crowded the floor I couldn't bear it without you Don't get around much anymore Thought I'd visit the club Got as far as the door I couldn't bear it without you Don't get around much anymore Darling, I guess my mind's more at ease But nevertheless, why stir up memories?
Been invited on dates Might've gone, but what for?
I couldn't bear it without you Don't get around much anymore Yeah ["Take the 'A' Train" by The Duke Ellington Orchestra] You must take the "A" train To go to Sugar Hill way up in Harlem You, if you miss the "A" train You'll find you missed the quickest way to Harlem Hurry, hurry now, it's coming Listen to those rails a-thrumming All aboard, get on the "A" train Soon, you'll find your way back to Harlem [drum solo] Hurry, hurry now, it's coming Listen to those rails a-thrumming All aboard, get on that "A" train Soon, you'll find out you've made your way to Harlem Doo do do doo ["Well, Git It!"

It's named after a beverage that, eh, don't think it tastes very good.
But that's just me.
A lot of people like it.
It's none other than "Tequila."
One, two, one, two, ready, and!
["Tequila" by The Champs] ["Tequila" by The Champs] - Band members: Tequila!
- There's this next two-word number.
Basically, if you know those two words, you can sing along.
It's called "Hey!

["Hey!

["You've Said It All"] - Band members: When you say Wis-con-sin You've said it all - Corey: That was awesome, awesome!
Thank you, thank you so much.
The Fifth Quarter is a one-of-a-kind tradition.
Helps define who we are.
So, sharing it with you really, really is meaningful.
Well, judging by how some of you were nodding your heads along to "Bones and Roses," it looks to me like we might have a lot of classic rock fans in the audience.
[audience cheers] This is "Let's Rock and Roll."
Here we go.
– Band members: Heeey yah!

Well, we can't thank you enough for being here this afternoon.
Your presence means more than you'll ever know.
And it's because of your continued support that this incredible organization has reached its 50th concert.
And that's something that's truly worth celebrating.
[cheers and applause] The first spring concert took place, as I mentioned earlier, March 1975.
And it was the brainchild of the great Mike Leckrone.
And there is... [cheers and applause] ...no greater cheerleader for this organization than Mike.
And we are grateful that he and his family are here with us tonight.
[cheers and applause] So, please join me in thanking him for his extraordinary contributions to this band program, this institution, and this great state.
Mike Leckrone, everybody.
[cheers and applause] The UW Band family is large and far reaching.
And if you ever participated in this band program, please stand up and be recognized.
[cheers and applause] What we do is only possible because of the paths you paved and the footsteps you've laid before us, so we thank you for your lasting impact.
Our UW Band alumni, everybody.
Thank you so much for your support.
[cheers and applause] On the stage are individuals wearing roses.
And these roses represent the end of a journey, but the beginning of another journey.
This is their last performance as collegiate students with the UW Band.
And we wish to send a heartfelt, heartfelt thanks.
And I'm gonna ask them to stand up.
Stand up, stand up and be recognized.
[cheers and applause] Thank you for all that you've done for our organization.
And now, we'll close today's program with our signature Badger Band finale.
Please help us celebrate one of the great institutions in the world.
This is a special place.
And it's wonderful to be able to play music on its behalf.
So, help us celebrate the University of Wisconsin.
