Sue's Rescue from Mount St. Helens
They stopped the helicopter, and then walked down to us. Mike kinda just came up and put his arms around me and said, "We're so glad we found you." -

But Sue refused to be rescued until Mike made a promise. We pretty much just stood there and told them we're not getting on the helicopter unless you go back in for our friends. He just made the decision, we're gonna go after them, we're gonna help them, we're gonna get them. You heard Mike say that. Yep, and that's stuck with me always to this day, that instead of flying away from it, they flew into it. -

Mike radioed for a smaller chopper that could more easily land on the rough terrain, and led it to Brian's location. He then learned via radio that Dan had also been found. Both were brought so safety. But Sue's friends Terry and Karen had been killed by a fallen tree, and were later found in each other's arms. As the helicopter headed for safety, Mike tried to comfort Sue. I remember just reaching out and touching us, and saying, "It's gonna be okay." -

Something about the way Mike talked to you was really touching to you. Not just that, but he had a mission, and yet he still took the time to be caring and gentle. That just touched me forever. 37 years has gone by. - Gosh, time flies. You still would like to meet him again. I would. What do you think you'd say to him? Thank you from the very, very bottom of my heart. I know what you put on the line to come and get us, and I know what you risked. You've never forgotten it. Not for a minute, nope.
