I see the sunrise creeping in Everything changes like the desert wind Here she comes and then she's gone again and I'm just a traveler on this earth Sure as my heart's behind the pocket of my shirt I'll just keep rolling till I'm in the dirt 'Cause I'm a traveler Oh, I'm a traveler I couldn't tell you, honey, I don't know Where I'm going, but I've got to go 'Cause every turn reveals some other road And I'm a traveler Oh, I'm a traveler My heartbeat's rhythm is a lonesome sound Just like the rubber turning on the ground Always lost and nowhere bound I'm just a traveler on this earth Sure as my heart's behind the pocket of my shirt I'll just keep rolling till I'm in the dirt 'Cause I'm a traveler Oh, I'm a traveler I couldn't tell you honey, I don't know Where I'm going, but I've got to go 'Cause every turn reveals some other road And I'm a traveler Oh, I'm a traveler When I'm gone Somebody else will have to feel this wrong Somebody else will have to sing this song Somebody else will have to sing along Sing along I'm just a traveler on this earth Sure as my heart's behind the pocket of my shirt I'll just keep rolling till I'm in the dirt 'Cause I'm a traveler Oh, I'm a traveler I couldn't tell you honey, I don't know Where I'm going, but I've got to go 'Cause every turn reveals some other road And I'm a traveler Oh, I'm a traveler

-Whoo!
Scattered cheers
Honey, load up your questions And pick up your sticks and your stones And pretend I'm a shelter For heartaches that don't have a home Choose the words that cut like a razor And all that I'll say Is fi-i-i-i-i-i-re away Take your best shot Show me what you got Honey, I'm not afraid Rear back and take aim And fire away Well, I wish I could say That I've never been here before But you know and I know That I'll always come back for more Your love might be my damnation But I'll cry to my grave Fi-i-i-i-i-i-re away Take your best shot Show me what you got Honey, I'm not afraid Rear back and take aim And fire away Oh, fi-i-i-i-i-i-re away Take your best shot Show me what you got Honey, I'm not afraid Rear back and take aim And fire away Fire away Oh, fire away

"Second One to Know" plays
Don't put my love on your back burner Never let anything that hot get cold And if you ever change your mind Want to leave my love behind Just let me be the second one to know Yeah, the second one to know Hold up my right hand Swear to the promised land Rather die before I treat you bad All I ask of you Is treat me the same way, too 'Cause I don't want to lose this thing we have Don't put my love on your back burner Never let anything that hot get cold And if you ever change your mind Want to leave my love behind Just let me be the second one to know Yeah, the second one to know
Guitar solo
First, you stole my heart That was the easy part Don't ever tell me that crime don't pay Now that it's in your hands I want you to understand I would have given it to you anyway Don't put my love on your back burner Never let anything that hot get cold And if you ever change your mind Wanna leave my love behind Just let me be the second one to know Yeah, the second one to know

It's called "Whiskey and You." There's a bottle -Oh, yeah. -Yes! - On the dresser by your ring And it's empty So right now, I don't feel a thing And I'll be hurting When I wake up on the floor But I'll be over it by noon That's the difference between whiskey and you
Audience cheers
Come tomorrow I can walk in any store It ain't a problem They'll always sell me more But your forgiveness Well, that's something I can't buy There ain't a thing that I can do That's the difference between whiskey and you One's the devil One keeps driving me insane At times, I wonder If they ain't both the same But one's a liar Helps to hide me from my pain And one's the long-gone bitter truth That's the difference between whiskey and you
Audience cheers
I've got a problem But it ain't like what you think Oh, I drink because I'm lonesome And I'm lonesome 'cause I drink But if I don't break down And bring it on myself It'll hit out of the blue That's the difference between whiskey and you One's the devil One keeps driving me insane At times I wonder Oh, if they ain't both the same But one's a liar That helps to hide me from my pain And one's the long-gone bitter truth That's the difference between whiskey and you Oh, that's the difference between whiskey and you

"Tennessee Whiskey" plays
I used to spend my nights out in a barroom Liquor was the only love I'd known But you rescued me from reachin' for the bottle And brought me back From being too far gone You're as smooth As Tennessee whiskey You're as sweet as strawberry wine You're as wa-a-a-a-rm As a glass of brandy And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time I've looked for love In all the same old places, y'all Found the bottom of the bottle's always dry Yes, it is Yes, it is, now
Audience cheers
But when you poured out your heart, I didn't waste it 'Cause there's nothing like your love To get me hi-i-i-i-i-gh And you're as smooth As Tennessee whiskey You're as sweet as strawberry wine You're as wa-a-a-a-rm As a glass of brandy And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time

The Tom Petty "Wildflowers" record is, for me, a very formative record and a record by which I judge a lot of other records, you know, sonically and the songs and the way it flows as an album. It really was the record that kind of made me fall in love with the album more than individual songs, you know? Those guys were so influential to me and so musical and so great. They're really great, and Tom...was a singular talent that I don't think, you know, comes around that much, and as a singer and as a guitar player -- people don't talk about that -- but as songwriter and as a guy who put an album together, you know? And, boy, he's gonna be missed. I'm gonna miss him even though I only met him really briefly. I will never forget the experience of playing Wrigley Field with him and getting to play two shows in Milwaukee at Summerfest with them. And it's -- You know, awards are good and selling records is good and, you know, making a living's good. But when you get to do things with heroes, those are the things that -- to use the word that you were talking about -- that elevate the experience of playing music. Those are the things that -- Those are the moments that you kind of remember and go, "Man, I did that one time," you know? -Next, red-dirt country rock from Turnpike Troubadours.
"The Housefire" plays
I remember smelling smoke I woke up, I was choking Lorrie grabbed the baby, and we made it safe outside She never missed a note Took a breath and cleared her throat And wrapped him in a Carhartt coat She found out in my ride The next thing I remember I was barefoot in December When I hit the door again, it really came alive That was all she wrote in a 30-second note I got out with a photograph and my old Auto-5 Lord knows that I've been blessed I can stand up to the test I can live on so much less This much, I've been learning Feel a pounding in my chest I'm fearful, I'll confess How am I to get my rest? The house I built is burning Well, Lorrie called the volunteers Siren music to my ears First I've been glad to hear the flashing red and blue Can't repay the time they gave There was nothing left to save Shake all of their hands and wave They did all they could do Lord knows that I've been blessed And I can stand up to the test I can live on so much less This much, I've been learning Forgive my cowardice I'm fearful, I'll confess How am I to get my rest? The house I built is burning Snuck away two nights ago Rode around the logging roads Been stuck in a motor home about to fall apart We finally made a go Got dealt a heavy blow She said, "I'll bet you make it It's a long way from your heart" Well, I know that I've been blessed And I can make more out of less And I can get my rest in any bed that I lay down in Got nothing holding me Got a couple memories A picture of the three of us And my grandfather's Browning Hey!

"Every Girl" plays
Well, she was born in the morning Late October, San Antone Aw, she's every girl I've ever known One, two, one, two, three! Well, she was born in the morning Late October, San Antone Aw, she's every girl I've ever known Well, she don't talk about religion She talks about The Stones Oh, she's every girl I've ever known And her tongue is like the devil When she tries to concentrate She says she don't want marriage But she still believes in fate And she stands her ground defiantly But cries when she's alone Oh, she's every girl I've ever known
Fiddle solo
Well, now her voice, it is a melody Sings just like a bird Oh, she's every song I've ever heard And her heartbeat is a rhythm that commands her every word Oh, she's every song I've ever heard She reflects the world in happiness And echoes all the pain Her smiles, the world of sunrise Her cries, to make it rain And she hides the truth discretely You'd have to take her word Oh, she's every song I've ever heard
Pedal steel guitar solo
Fiddle solo
Well, she's a sober Sunday Kitchen conversation with my dad Oh, she's every friend I've ever had We never failed to cut a trail whenever times were bad Oh, she's every friend I've ever had She's a flighty good-time buddy in the corner of the bar But she'd fight the devil for you Just for being who you are And she's the last to cast a stone Although she'd love to leave you mad Oh, she's every friend I've ever had

"A Tornado Warning" plays
We were sitting on the front porch With the weather rolling in Laughing louder than the big south wind You ran out to roll your window up Light rain falling in your hair Your tan legs checkered from a folding chair And there's country music in the kitchen Hear it singing through the screen Weather warnings in between Glad you got out of the city Ain't no telling what's in store Along the 35 corridor Kerosene to feed the flame Your effect is quite the same Shadows dancing on the wall and Waiting for the sky to fall "You couldn't ask for better weather" You were saying with a grin To the sound of hailstones hitting tin It's loud enough you gotta yell now The whole thing hits me like a song A pretty one that won't last long Kerosene to feed the flame Your effect is quite the same Shadows dancing on the wall and Waiting for the sky to fall and Waiting for the sky to fall

"Before the Devil Knows We're Dead" plays
Audience cheers
Well, now, he was pushing 80 But he acted 22 Oh, and he could laugh and drink Just like his grandchildren would do There was square hay on the meadow Second cutting of the year Well, his summer work was over Once they got the pasture cleared And they were drinking on a big bluff Across the river from the field Well, he walked up to the edge Threw a stone in, then he kneeled Then he looked down at the water He said, "Boys, I'm going in" They were cheering when he jumped But he did not come up again Oh, well, raise another round, boys And have another glass Be thankful for today knowing it will never last And let's leave the world laughing When our eulogies are read May we all get to heaven 'fore the devil knows we're dead No, we all get to heaven 'fore the devil knows we're dead Well, it was 20 after midnight They were going 85 She was barely out of high school Wanting bad to feel alive Just a two-lane piece of blacktop A snakey stretch of road Well, the wind blew through the wing vents It was clear and fresh and cold Well, the driver killed the headlights And he put the throttle down And when they hit the railroad crossing They were five feet off the ground Just a-screaming through the midnight Till they came down again Well, the front tire hit a bar ditch They went end over end Oh, well, raise another round, boys And have another glass Be thankful for today knowing it will never last And let's leave the world laughing When our eulogies are read May we all get to heaven 'fore the devil knows we're dead No, we all get to heaven 'fore the devil knows we're dead Come on, now!

"Diamonds & Gasoline" plays
Well, now, undercover Blame it on a season Well, it ain't no kind of reason, baby Why come and go? Had a lover Lord, she felt as good as trees And you can ask her if it's pleasing You can ask the wind to blow And I would buy for you a diamond Or myself some gasoline If I can't afford you, darling Then I can't afford to dream And is it time I should be moving? Is it time I settle down? Will I sit still, will I feel The wheels a-spinning round?
Guitar solo
Well, now, I'm not the brightest bird That ever flew I'm just someone you knew A road you traveled on And all those colors, Lord, they shine and fade away They're just like New Year's Day They're here, and then they're gone And I would buy for you a diamond Or myself some gasoline If I can't afford you, darling Then I can't afford to dream And is it time I should be moving? Is it time I settle down? Will I sit still or will I feel The wheels a-spinning round? Come on, man.
Guitar solo
Well, now, Lord, I love you Wish you only knew Well, I wish you had a clue Wish you'd had a clue, you know But I'm stuck here in Tulsa with my Oklahoma blues With a pair of concrete shoes Got me sinking pretty low And I would buy for you a diamond Or myself some gasoline If I can't afford you, darling Then I can't afford to dream And is it time I should be moving? Is it time I settle down? Will I sit still, will I feel The wheels a-spinning round? The wheels a-spinning round The wheels The wheels Oh, the wheels spinning round

They're not together anymore, but my buddy Kevin Russell played with them, and I wrote this next song with him. This is called "Something to Hold On to." Check out his band at Stubb's. It's called Shinyribs. -Yeah! - Won't you give me something Something to hold on to? This whole world has taken Taken me for a ride You come smiling through the doorway Looking like an old regret Still a whole lot better than you did last time we met Between a real tough spot and a hole in a concrete wall Running out of highway, looking for a place to fall Darling, won't you give me Something to hold on to? This whole world has taken Taken me for a ride Pick me up and learn me Turn me down and burn me Darling, won't you give me Give me one last try Well, to tell you truth, I would never be here again But I feel all right, now, darling For the shape I'm in Nearly fell to pieces Just thinking it would all fall through Feeling like somebody when you finally came into view Darling, won't you give me Something to hold on to? This whole world has taken Taken me for a ride Pick me up and learn me Turn me down and burn me Darling, won't you give me Give me one last try?

Now, I can't say it all worked out like I planned Lucky I still had a leg on which to stand Now, I had a half of mind to move Leave in a little, try get gone But I just sat there staring at the second hand On the barroom wall, now Darling, won't you give me Something to hold on to? This whole world has taken Taken me for a ride Pick me up and learn me Turn me down and burn me Darling, won't you give me Give me one last try? Try

-So, there are characters in your songs. And some of these characters kind of continue through different albums. -Mm-hmm. I don't know. He's the one that kind of talked me into it. -Yeah, it was an idea we kicked around about, like, different writers we liked who did stuff like that, like William Faulkner or Stephen King, you know, that create their own little universe. And you have these characters and towns and scenes. And just -- you don't have to throw them away just 'cause the story's over. I mean, you can tell another story. -It's really effective to get to tell -- -To get to see a character more than once. -Yeah, and to get to tell -- They get to develop a bit. And then, once you get to that point, then maybe they develop more, they do different things. So it's -- I'm lucky to get to tool around with that. But you think about the "Red Headed Stranger" or any of that. Essentially, what I'm after is, like, not having to write a concept record just to mess with these stories. - Well, I'm 30-some years old now Well, I was born in '84 And I've been free as I can be And I won't ask for anymore So let the fiddle play a hoedown After I've drawn my last breath Well, tell everyone in Austin That I love y'all to death
