The Avett Brothers / Nickel Creek
Austin City Limits presents music that's authentic and original from the Avett Brothers... My my my heart like a kick drum My heart like a kick drum My heart like a kick drum My love like a voice And Nickel Creek. Celebrating 40 years. Woo ooh ooh ooh Woo ooh ooh ooh Woo ooh ooh ooh Woo ooh ooh ooh, yeah Recorded live from the Moody Theater, it's Austin City Limits. Now, music from the heart and soul of America. The Avett Brothers. Down with the shine, the perfect shine That poisons the well and ruins my mind I get took for a ride every time Down with the glistening shine It's in with the new and it's out with the old Out goes the warm and in comes the cold It's the most predictable story told In with the young and out with the old Down with the shine, the perfect shine That poisons the well and ruins my mind I get took for a ride every time Down with the glistening shine A belly full Of high dollar wine A fat hand and a fat wallet too Things change and get strange with this movement of time Now listen! It's happening right now to you Down with the shine, the perfect shine That poisons the well and ruins my mind I get took for a ride every time Down with the glistening shine It's a real bad time To bring up the truth But though we searched we found No fountain of youth Nope! Not in Spain And nowhere near Anywhere close to here There's nothing good because nothing lasts Down with the shine, the perfect shine That poisons the well and ruins my mind I get took for a ride every time Down with the glistening shine I get took for a ride every time Down with the glistening shine Down with the glistening shine Down with the glistening shine Down with the glistening shine There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right And it comes in black and it comes in white And I'm frightened by those that don't see it When nothing is owed or deserved or expected And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected If you're loved by someone, you're never rejected Decide what to be and go be it Come on, now There was a dream And one day I could see it Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded That somebody free it And there was a kid With a head full of doubt So I'll scream till I die And the last of those bad thoughts are finally out There's a darkness upon you that's flooded in light And in the fine print they tell you What's wrong and what's right It flies by day and it flies by night And I'm frightened by those that don't see it There was a dream And one day I could see it Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded That somebody free it Oh And there was a kid With a head full of doubt So I'll scream till I die and the last Of those bad thoughts are finally out There was a dream And one day I could see it Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded That somebody free it And there was a kid With a head full of doubt So I'll scream till I die and the last of those Bad thoughts are finally out There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right There's a darkness upon us that's flooded in light And I'm frightened by those that don't see it The footprints over the snow, the fabric of all the lonely C-covering only the fables and hands The rest is out in the cold holding the last of the season F-f-f-freezin', yeah My my my heart like a kick drum My heart like a kick drum My My love like a voice We're walkin' into the fields We're walkin into the forest the moon is before us up above We're holdin' hands in the rain S-sayin' words like I love you D-d-d'you love me? Yeah My my heart like a kick drum My heart like a kick drum My heart like a kick drum My love like a voice Mother Mary Heard us approaching her door Though we Didn't make a sound There's nothing like finding gold Within the rocks hard and cold I'm so surprised to find more Always surprised to find more I won't look back anymore, I left the people that do Its not the chase that I love, its me following you My heart like a kick drum My heart like a kick drum My heart like a kick drum My love like a voice My heart like a kick Oh, yeah Here's one of these old gospel songs that we... That we sing every now and again. I come to the garden alone While the dew is still on the roses And the voice I hear falling on my ear The Son of God discloses And He walks with me And He talks with me And He tells me I am His own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known He speaks and the sound of His voice Is so sweet the birds hush their singing And the melody that He gave to me Within my heart is ringing And He walks with me And He talks with me And He tells me I am His own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known I'd stay in the garden with Him Though the night around me be falling But he bids me go through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling And He walks with me And He talks with me And He tells me I am His own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known And He walks with me And He talks with me And He tells me I am His own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known We grew up watching this show, and... To us, this is what music looks like on television, so... We are honored to be here tonight. Thank you for letting us be. Hurt so bad You don't come around here anymore Worse than that Nothing's really helping I've been thinking 'Bout drinking again It's all right If you finally stop caring Just don't go and tell someone that does 'Cause even though I know there's hope in Every morning song I have to find that melody alone Her name became The flame unto the fire A magpie on the wire warned of those Dead until the high Shamelessly alive until the low It's all right If you finally stop caring Just don't go and tell someone that does Cause even though I know there's hope in Every morning song I have to find that melody alone Now we can go ahead If no one notices What's the point of it? I have to ask But how you learn to see The hope inside of me When you're sure to be On leave at last Hurt so bad More than I expected that it would Worse than that It seems to be lasting just a little Longer than it should It's all right If you finally stop caring Just don't go and tell someone that does 'Cause even though I know there's hope in Every morning song I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to find that melody alone I have to sing That melody Alone Now, celebrating their 25th anniversary with their first new music in nine years, here's Nickel Creek. The battle is over Here we all lie In a dry sea of Solo cups With the sun in our eyes But it's one of those endings Where no one claps 'Cause they're sure that there's more What a great way to start the first day Of the rest of my life I guess the show's going on So we pick up the pieces We dropped for a song And an ear-splitting headache That makes it hard to figure out which puzzle they're for But I can leave this part out Of the story I write And there are worse ways to start The first day of the rest of my life Roommates Friends, lovers Quiet I'm coming to I'm turning myself into Something a little less promising A little more useful The battle is over We lost but we'll live to call off the war Don't that ceiling look high from the floor Don't it hurt just to move as we shrink from the light As it pierces our bodies and thaws out our hearts What a great way to start The first day of the rest of The rest of my life I feel better now. You don't owe me One more minute of your wasted time You act like it's all fine But all the years I gave you Thinking you knew that you wanted me I wanted to believe I've gotta make a destination Find where I'll be loved This time I've got no hesitation I'll be movin' on To where I belong I'll be movin' on I'm tired of trying To describe what you will never see How that we could be Gave up and lost her Now you're looking for a little grace Well, look at my face I've gotta make a destination Find where I'll be loved There ain't no time for hesitation I'll be movin' on To where I belong I'll be movin' on Over the line of dawn I'm already gone Gone Empty corner Gotta keep movin' Taking hits while You've been missing Night after night After I hear you Say we're solid But I know we're looking through the cracks In our little patch It isn't hard to leave knowing that I'll be getting life on track Never looking back I've gotta make a destination Find where I'll be loved This time I've got no hesitation I'm already gone I'm movin' on Find where I'll be loved Over the line of dawn I'm movin' on Find where I'll be loved I'm already gone Ladies and gentlemen, that's Sara Watkins. It's time to bid this whole world goodbye Oh, glory, time to fly away We'll meet our savior in the sky Hallelujah, the 21st of May Sinner, heed these words of mine 'Bout the coming judgment day Yes, the end is drawing nigh Hallelujah, the 21st of May They laughed while Noah built his boat Then cried when came the rain They mock me now but I will float On the 21st of May Well, I've never been so sure And I've never led no one astray 'Cept in the fall of '94 But hallelujah, the 21st of May They laughed while Noah built his boat Then cried when came the rain They mock me now but I will float On the 21st of May They mock me now but I will float On the 21st of May Mm-hmm mmm hmm mm-hmm Hallelujah, the 21st of May That's Sean Watkins playing the guitar and singing there for you. The thing you may have noticed about instrumental songs is that there are no words, and that's kind of -- that's kind of the thing about them, one of the defining characteristics, really. Um, which makes them a real bear to name. You end up having to just pull words out of thin air and applying them to your song. We're very proud to present to you Mr. Mark Schatz. Here's a Fleetwood Mac song we've been doing the last few weeks. Countin' on my fingers, countin' on my toes Slippin' through your fingers, watchin' how it grows You can love me, baby, but you can't walk out Someone oughtta tell you what it's really all about Do you ever wonder, do you ever hate Six feet under someone that can wait You can love me, baby, but you can't walk out Someone oughtta tell you Oughtta tell you what it's really All about You're never gonna make it, baby Oh It's never gonna make it crazy Oh You're never gonna make it, babe Make it, babe, make it, babe Countin' on my fingers, countin' on my toes Slippin' through the ringer, watchin' how it goes You can love me, baby, but you can't walk out Someone oughtta tell you what it's really all about Buy another fixture, tell another lie Paint another picture, see who's surprised You can love me, baby, but you can't walk out Someone oughtta tell you Oughtta tell you what it's really all about You're never gonna make it, baby Oh It's never gonna make it crazy Oh You're never gonna make it, babe You can love me, baby, but you can't walk out Someone oughtta tell you what it's reallly all about Do you ever wonder, do you ever hate Six feet under someone that can wait You can love me, baby, but you can't walk out Someone oughtta tell you what it's really all about Someone oughtta tell you what it's really all about Someone oughtta tell you what it's really all about You can leave me, baby, but you can't walk out Someone oughtta tell you what, tell you what, tell you what Tell you what it's really all about Thanks. Thank you so much. We're going to do one more song for you. You've been awesome. Awesome to play for. Cry the tears from my eyes Leave me here Long enough to realize Where is love now Where is love now Out here in the dark If I should hold all my dreams Through the night Of the way life sometimes seems And if I can't see which way to go I'll stay lost in silence till I know Cry the tears from my eyes And leave me here Long enough to realize Where is love now Where is love now Out here in the dark Cry the tears from my eyes Leave me here Long enough to realize Where is love now Where is love now Where is love now Where is love now Out here in the dark Out here in the dark For so long we put everything into NickeCreek. I mean, we had other -- we had other little projects, but Nickel Creek took up almost all of our musical lives, and as a result, you know, when inevitably you find something that you're into that you can't really do in this one outlet that you have, you start focusing on those limitations instead of celebrating the strengths of the project. I feel like I gained a lot of -- of strength just individual musicianship and I feel like -- I feel like each of us kind of came back to this as like stronger singers and stronger players with separate musical personalities that will always relate to each other but we have something new to bring to the band as individuals rather than it just being this like one organism, three people who grew up together. It was the first time that we really had some perspective on the band and what we are and what we -- what our strengths are. Mama's cooking something up Serve it to us all Satan's ringing in now And I've gotta take that call Gotta take the call, boys, gotta take the call Satan's ringing in now and I've gotta take that call You've gotta take the call, boy Gotta take the call Satan's ringing in now And I've gotta take the call
