ACL Hall of Fame New Year's Special 2018
-Welcome to the "ACL Hall of Fame New Year's Special," a celebration honoring artists who helped make "Austin City Limits" the longest-running music show in the world. Tonight, we honor and induct Marcia Ball, with guest performances by Irma Thomas, Tracy Nelson, Lou Ann Barton, Carolyn Wonderland... and Shelley King... the legendary Ray Charles... with guest performances by Norah Jones, Ruthie Foster, and Gary Clark Jr. And one of America's great rock-'n'-roll bands, Los Lobos, with guest performances by Robert Randolph and Boz Scaggs, with host Chris Isaak. It's the "ACL Hall of Fame New Year's Special." -Now your host for the "Austin City Limits Hall of Fame New Year's Special," Chris Isaak.
Cheers and applause
-Welcome, everybody, to the fifth annual Austin City Limits Hall of Fame celebration. This is going to be great if I don't screw it up.
Laughter
We're here to honor and induct... I like that. That sounds vaguely legal.
Laughter
...three uniquely talented artists who have helped to make "Austin City Limits" the longest-running music program in television history.
Cheers and applause
And, look, longer than "American Bandstand," longer than "Soul Train" -- but wait! -- longer than "Hullabaloo."
Laughter and cheering
Yeah. This is our annual New Year's celebration, so it's a special night in more ways than one, a one-time special double-whammy show. Let's get right to it.
Cheers and applause
Our first honoree had a remarkable career over the last 50 years. I can't believe that when I say that. She can make you boogie and make you dance when she plays, and when she sings the blues, she makes hurting sound like such a good idea.
Laughter and cheering
She appeared in the very first season of "Austin City Limits" and four times since then -- Austin's own Marcia Ball.
Cheers and applause
- Saving all my dough Saving more and more Tired of being alone I got my baby on the phone -Hey, baby! - Trying with all our might To have a good time Saturday night I want to look real good Buy me a brand-new suit Brushing out my hair So when I get there I'll be feeling right To have a good time Saturday night
Cheers and applause
-Please welcome The Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas.

Cheers and applause continue
-Thank you so very much. It is my honor to be here tonight to present my friend, and I can say that with a big heart. I'll never forget the kindness of Marcia Ball. When Katrina came, we were stranded here in Austin. Marcia Ball single-handedly got everyone who was from New Orleans -- musicians, nonmusicians -- she found them a place to stay, and if that's not a big heart, there is no such thing.
Cheers and applause
Now, I could go on and tell you a few cute stories about us when we were traveling as a group with Marcia and Tracy and I when we promoting our "Sing It!" CD. We had some occasions where they wanted to interview us, and we didn't have any girl crap to tell them, so they didn't want to interview us. We were people who honored each other's talent, respected each other's talent, and gave each other space on that bus, and we had the most wonderful two months we've ever had in a long time. So it is my honor to welcome Marcia Ball to the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame.

-Irma started me out on this trip, on this amazing trip. From the time I saw her in New Orleans when I was 13 years old, she's been my guiding light, with her voice and her songs and, most of all, her dignity, who showed me how you should act and how you should behave as an artist and as a person. And she's led me along every one of these 50... Oh, my God.
Laughter
...50 years. I was 13. She was barely 20. She was pregnant.
Light laughter
It helped later on when I was pregnant

and still playing music, too. So, thank you, especially. When they asked who I wanted to be with me, Irma and Tracy were the first things I said.
Cheers and applause
And then, I want to thank everybody here at Austin City Limits. It's been such a long and fabulous run. Now, 44 years into this, it's an amazing archive of American music. There's nothing like it out there, and everyone who's anybody has always wanted to be on "Austin City Limits." So I was lucky enough to get here first...
Chuckles
Laughter
...stay longer, go farther, and have more fun that I ever, ever imagined possible. And for that...
Cheers and applause
Thank you. For that, I want to thank Bobby Earl Smith and Carlin Major and two of my most important, my greatest musical influences, Delbert McClinton and Doug Sahm.
Cheers and applause
I think we should play some music.

So, we're going to play, and I'm going to reintroduce one more time The soul queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas...

Now it's time to celebrate our next honoree. He's one of the most important and influential musicians in American history. His 1980 appearance on "Austin City Limits" was a flat-out hit, and it was a turning point for this show in its early years. He left us in 2004, but his music goes on -- the legendary Ray Charles.
Cheers and applause
- Now, baby, listen, baby Don't you treat me this a-way I'll be back on my feet some day - I don't care if you do 'cause it's understood You ain't got no money You just ain't no good - Oh, I guess if you say so I'm going to have to pack my things and go - That's right, hit the road, Jack And don't you come back no more No more, no more, no more Hit the road, Jack And don't you come back no more - Wow-ow-ow-ow - Hit the road, Jack And don't you come back no more No more, no more, no more Hit the road, Jack And don't you come back no more -Please welcome the President of Concord Records, John Burk. -Truly an honor to be here tonight to celebrate the incomparable Ray Charles.
Cheers and applause
Yeah. Come on.
Cheers and applause continue
So, in thinking about what to say, I went back to some of my earliest memories of Ray, which go way back to when I was a little kid playing in my living room, and we got one of those... Some of you might remember when everybody had a console stereo, and we had a nice new one. And my dad pulled out a record and starting putting it on, and I was looking down. I wasn't paying that much attention to what he was going to play, and the music started, still wasn't paying that much attention, but when that voice came over the speakers, I snapped up. I said, "Whoa. What is that? I've never heard anything. Like, who is that?" Ray Charles, "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music." And I fell in love with that record. I fell in love Ray, became a fan for life. And I got to tell you, I never dreamed that, decades later, I'd find myself sitting in his office, across from this big old desk, and behind the desk there was this guy that looked just like Ray Charles.
Laughter
And he scared the hell out of me 'cause I was there to pitch making a new record, and... But, you know, I decided to make my pitch. So I said, "Look, and it's from the heart, Mr. Charles -- I believe that you have influenced so many singers, so many artists, that, if we were to do a duets record that we could get anybody, and we could get people that truly understood who you were, who you are, who you are as an artist, and what you mean to music." Then it got quiet for a minute. Then I really got scared.
Laughter
And Ray started rocking like he did.
Laughter
"Ah. Ah. All right. Let's do it."
Laughter
"Yeah, we're gonna make a record!" This is a man who will surely go down in history as one of the greatest of all time.
Cheers and applause
So it is truly my great honor to welcome Ray Charles into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame.
Cheers and applause
Yeah! And here to accept this award tonight is the President of the Ray Charles Foundation. Please give it up for Ms. Valerie Ervin.
Cheers and applause
-Thank you so very much to Austin City Limits Hall of Fame and everyone involved in making this honor for Mr. Charles special. Ray Charles was able to blend all the music influences that defined his unique sound and allowing the heart and soul of music to remain authentically his. Regardless of his world-renowned fame and accomplishments, Mr. Charles always recognized the value of the simpler things in life, and to him, there were only two kinds of music -- good music and bad music.
Laughter
Yeah. So, tonight, I am proud and grateful on his behalf, and all I can say is what he would say -- simply, "Thank you." Thank you.
Cheers and applause
-Please welcome Norah Jones.

For over 40 years, they've carried their music from East Los Angeles all over the world while never forgetting their roots. Tonight, we're really proud to honor Los Lobos! - The sunlight plays upon my window pane I wake up To a world that's still the same My father said to be strong That a good man could never do wrong In a dream I had last night in America A wise man Was telling stories to me About the places he had been to And the things that he had seen A quiet voice Is singing something to me An age-old song about the home of the brave In this land here of the free One time one night in America -Please welcome Robert Rodriguez.
Cheers and applause
-Hello. I first learned of Los Lobos back when I was in high school in 1984 because "How Will the Wolf Survive?" played in an endless loop on MTV back then. And a few years later, their album "Light of the Moon" and the recording of "La Bamba" were both out in the same year. The world belonged to Los Lobos that year. And for me, it was just so life-changing to see Latino faces in popular culture and media like that taking the world by storm...
Cheers and applause
...while rocking out, and they represented to me the true fabric of America and what it was about, and it truly inspired me -- so much so that, when it came time to make my film "Desperado," I asked...
Cheers and applause
Hey, thank you....I asked Los Lobos to not just write songs, but to write the entire score, and they nailed it. I mean, it's a fantastic score by these guys. They also wrote the now classic "Cancin del Mariachi." The... Ay, yi, yi, yi

...from that film, and if you ask any mariachi band in the world -- and I've done it -- they all know -- just say, "Play that song from 'Desperado,'" and it's now a mariachi standard. I'm really proud of that. These guys did it.
Cheers and applause
Because I love mariachi bands.
