Joey Hoey on how the Veterans Housing and Recovery Program offers long-term aid.

Steven Potter:
So, we're here talking about the Veterans Housing and Recovery Program — it is a transitional program to help get the veterans on their feet who are either homeless or facing homelessness. Why is it important that it's a transitional program?

Joey Hoey:
There are programs that are shelters, and I think everyone is familiar with shelters, which are great things, but they provide some very temporary help for a veteran or anyone else. They give them a place to stay safe and warm and overnight, but then most of the homeless shelters just put people back out on the streets every day — not put 'em back out, but, you know? The transitional programs are long-term commitments on both the part of the person running the program and the veteran to engage in some pretty serious and meaningful work to try and make the changes that are necessary, to go from being either homeless or at risk to being able to maintain a steady living situation, and hopefully, employment, and others. So, it's a holistic view, and treatment, and the results from these programs over the years, have been phenomenal. So, yeah, it's not to disparage the other type of program, but this is an incredible resource that we've been able to offer up until this point to veterans across the state.
