Anita Hill Unpacks Her Optimism and Humble Beginnings

Narrator
Anita was born in the tiny town of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the youngest of 13 siblings. Her parents were farmers and she was raised without running water or indoor plumbing until she was 12 years old. Even so, she wasn't limited by her circumstances. Quite the opposite. It was isolated but it didn't feel isolated. Well, you had all these siblings. I had my siblings and my family believed in the future, and my mother in particular. My mother was this person who said I wanna make sure every one of my children has a chance to go to college. And later in life when I was talking with her about it, she said it was because she didn't. And she really did believe that in order to prepare for the future, and in a way, the future didn't really exist, it was just an imagination of what the future would be like. She wanted us to be ready for it if it happened.
