As we all cope with the horrible news coming out of the tragic Newtown, Conn. school shooting this morning, here are some tips and advice from Fred Rogers Company for talking with children about scary events in the news. The advice eases young minds who are looking for reassurance about their well-being, answers questions about scary images they are seeing on television and helps them feel more secure in an uncertain time.

Much of this advice will be helpful for kids and adults looking for some kind of comfort in the wake of a senseless tragedy.

For parents looking for news updates on the developments coming out of Connecticut, please visit the PBS NewsHour homepage and tune in at 6 p.m. for the show’s nightly broadcast.
