Watch POV: I’m Carolyn Parker at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 on Wisconsin Public Television.
It’s hard to believe it’s been over seven years since Hurricane Katrina displaced hundreds of thousands of people and caused more than $108 billion in damage to the Golf Coast. What’s worse is that some people have still not completely recovered from the third largest hurricane to ever reach US soil.
Those of us not directly affected by the wave of destruction were shown footage of the aftermath and recovery day and night. Long shots of families belongings floating down the streets and aerial views from helicopters were so common they began to look like stock footage. What about the people? You can’t paint a full picture without including the families who were forced from their homes and still rebuilding their communities even seven years later.
It took five years of filming to tell the story, but now POV can proudly bring you the story of one family’s life after Hurricane Katrina.
