Concerts on the Square – In Your Living Room!

Watch Concerts on the Square “Fairy Tales and Fables” at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 29 on Wisconsin Public Television.

Summer is here in Wisconsin. In communities across Wisconsin that also means that the sounds of the season often arrive through outdoor musical celebrations. From Milwaukee’s Summerfest, which begins its 11-day run today at that city’s lakefront, to the many country music festivals (Oshkosh’s Country U.S.A. will draw thousands of country fans this week) and weekly civic band concerts in parks across the state, Wisconsin is a summer music kind of place.

One of the grandest of summer music traditions in Wisconsin is Concerts on the Square. Now in its 30th year, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra fills the Capitol Square in Madison with a series of Wednesday night concerts that are free and open for music revelers to come and enjoy – usually along with a picnic dinner. The music is always top-notch, and the guest performers dazzle with their talents.

This year, WPT is pleased to bring the first of the season’s Concerts on the Square into your living room with a special broadcast of this week’s “Fairy Tales and Fables” Saturday evening. Join Maestro Andrew Sewell and David Cao – the 2013 winner of the Young artist Concerto Contest – for a program of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty, Peter and the Wolf, and more.

Read about Concerts on the Square’s 30th anniversary in this Wisconsin State Journal article, and then tune in this weekend for some of the state’s great summer music!

  • I admit I was surfing when I discovered Concerts on the square and the tribute to James Taylor by Guest Artist Jeans n Classics .. His performance was outstanding .. Hope sometime in the future he returns.. I would love to purchase a CD or a DVD By them. Wonderful , Wonderful.. Thank you Ron and Barb Warren Im still not clear as to what the artist ‘s name is???? If someone could e-mail us it would be very much appreciated….

  • I agree with David….hard to find. And, so sorry they only chose to record one of the entire summer series. The James Taylor one was great, but the U2 cover band was so incredible, it is very unfortunate that it is not available. On-line anywhere? in the future? Hope they return next year and that all the concerts are recorded. They are well worth it and not everyone can make it there to see them live.

  • I wish it wasn’t so difficult to find out when Concerts on the Square will be broadcast on WPT. I found it in airwaves magazine, but it is so difficult to find. I hope I didn’t miss the first one. I thought it was July 7 but can’t find it listed. Is there a broadcast schedule available online???”
