Tommy Emmanuel, CGP: Accomplice Live!

ANNOUNCER: This program is available with Passport because of your generous donation to your local PBS station.

Thank you.

TOMMY: I'm so glad you're here.

Thank you so much for- for coming tonight.

(crowd applauding and cheering) (crowd applauding and cheering) Ho!

(crowd applauding and cheering) Thank you, that's "Fuel."

(crowd applauding and cheering) I had a- a great pleasure to record one- one of my favorite songs that I first heard Doc Watson do called "Deep River Blues," um, I- I recorded it with- with my buddy Jason Isbell on my "Accomplice One" album.

And I'd like to do a little bit of that for you.

And- and I just wanted to let you know that I'm right in the middle of recording "Accomplice Two" right, right now.

So, um, there's a lot of wonderful people on it.

Well, let it rain Let it pour Let it rain a whole lot more 'Cause I got them deep river blues Yeah, let the rain drive right on Let the waves sweep along 'Cause I got them deep river blues My old gal's a good old pal But she looks like a water fowl When I get them deep river blues And there ain't no one to cry for me Fish all go out on a spree When I get them deep river blues I gotta pick you one now Well, give me back my old boat And I'm going to sail if she'll float 'Cause I got them deep river blues I'm goin' back to Muscle Shoals Times get better there I'm told 'Cause I got them deep river blues I gotta pick another one (crowd applauding and cheering) I got them deep river blues I'm going back to Muscle Shoals And times get better there I'm told I got them deep river blues I got them deep river blues, baby I got them deep river Blues Doc's guitar Hey!

(crowd applauding and cheering) Look out!

(crowd cheering) Yeah!

(crowd applauding and cheering) I lost a brother and a sister a month apart, and they visited me in a dream, and I wrote this song the next morning.

It's called "A Song for a Rainy Morning."

(crowd applauding and cheering) Before there was oil, before there was gas before there was gold, the currency was timber, was wood.

And I read a story about how dangerous the timber industry was and how so many people were trying to make a living.

So many people lo- lost their lives cutting down trees and- and all that kind of stuff, trying to get the tree into the river and then drowning and all that stuff.

So they were gonna make a film about this, and they asked me to write a piece of music about that, and they said, "It has to be a little sinister," you know.

(crowd laughs) And I said, "Can there be any hope in there?"

(crowd laughs) And then they said, "Yes, that there's room for a little hope, but it's gotta be pretty sinister."

So ladies and gentlemen, I hope that the hope gets to you tonight, that the sinister isn't too much.

Here it is, "Timberland."

Hope you like it.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Thank you, that's "Timberland."

(crowd applauding and cheering) It's time for my first guest tonight.

Can you believe it?

(crowd cheers) This is a song I wrote, and- and we're doing this 'cause I need the royalties.

(crowd laughing) Um... (Tommy laughing) No, she brings something beautiful to this piece, and- and I really wanted you to hear this tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen, Would you make her welcome, Miss Yasmin Williams.

(crowd applauding and cheering) (crowd applauding and cheering) Yasmin Williams!

(crowd applauding and cheering) Yasmin Williams, ladies and gentlemen.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Well, I live in America now, but I've lived in England.

I have a place there, and I have daughters and granddaughters there, and I have the rest of my family back in Australia, and- and we're over here, so.

And I think that, you know, if I went south, I would come to my old home of Australia and if I went that way, I'd end up in England.

And if I went that way, I'd end up back in America, somehow...

Doesn't matter where I am, I'm always halfway home.

That's the name of this song.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Thank you, "Halfway Home."

(crowd applauding and cheering) (crowd applauding and cheering) Thank you.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Ladies and gentlemen.

I'm very proud and thrilled to bring on my next guest.

And she's an incredible musician, just incredible in every way.

And she's really taken the world by storm.

I've- I've toured over in Europe and England with- with her with a fantastic show over there called "The Transatlantic Sessions."

Jerry Douglas invited me over, and he brought her too, and she just blew my mind.

And we've recorded a track together for this new album.

But I wanted you to hear her, and meet her tonight and give her all your love and support.

Miss Sierra Hull.

(crowd applauding and cheering) SIERRA: This is what I wrote sitting in the parking lot at Best Buy a few years back.

(crowd laughing) It's called "Best Buy."

One, two... You can buy me the best Say you love me like the rest But don't think I'm gonna buy the words you say You can tell me your sweet lies With those pretty big blue eyes But don't think I'm gonna give my heart away You can tell me things untrue Say you want me like you do That you'll always be the one that's by my side But I won't buy it I'll deny it 'Cause I know it isn't true 'Cause a million times I've heard these lies from you That you're gonna give your all And do your best Make me the happiest girl That's ever known a love so true Tell me that you love me so You will never let me go But I know it isn't so 'Cause the best thing you can buy Don't you think it's gonna fly Fly over like the lies I bought before 'Cause you can take your stuff I've had enough I'll even hold the door 'Cause I ain't gonna buy it anymore (crowd applauding and cheering) You got it!

(crowd applauding and cheering) That you're gonna give your all and do your best Make me the happiest girl That's ever known a love so true Tell me that you love me so You will never let me go But I know it isn't so 'Cause the best thing you can buy Don't you think it's gonna fly Fly over like the lies I bought before You can take your stuff I've had enough I'll even hold the door 'Cause I ain't gonna buy it anymore (crowd applauding and cheering) TOMMY: Huh?

(crowd applauding and cheering) This is a song I wrote back when I had hair and teeth and it was a while back.

(laughs) This song's inspired by having a family and what family means.

And so when you're a touring musician like both of us, um, time with your family, um... to describe it, you need a capital P, and that is precious.

Okay?

So this song is called "Precious Time," all about time with our family That's it.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Sierra Hull, ladies and gentlemen (crowd applauding and cheering) SIERRA: Thank you so much!

(crowd applauding and cheering) TOMMY: Isn't she awesome?

(crowd applauding and cheering) One of my very favorite singer-songwriters, I love this guy's writing, and I love how he sings, and I love his heart.

He's an amazing person.

I'm so proud to call him a friend.

Ladies and gentlemen, Rodney Crowell.

(crowd applauding and cheering) (crowd applauding and cheering) RODNEY: I'm- I'm just stalling.

(crowd laughs) There's a girl I used to know About three broken hearts ago I married her and left her in the dark Pittsburgh has her now And I'm headed there somehow For to see if I can kindle that old spark She had that Louisiana sizzle She had that sleepy Southern sass I split the blanket down the middle Since then, it's all been downhill fast I'm looking forward to the past I'm a Mississippi man And a Conway Twittie fan And I haven't heard a song I like in years But I drive a pulpwood truck And I make an honest buck And I'll be ready when my savior reappears You will not think I'm dumb and lazy Judge me entirely without class But if you knew how Mama raised me You'd know it's you who comes off crass I'm looking forward to the past He who lives and learns Can't renegotiate the terms On the freaking fracking future Full of carbon copy crap Steaks are through the roof And there's very little proof That we can buy fresh food and water Somewhere out there off the map Well I cut my teeth don't hurt And I've slung my share of dirt And I blame myself for everything gone wrong What's done is done they say And if there's hell we have to pay I might have known I must have known it all along I don't know two nickels from a quarter TOMMY: Hey!

I don't know my shirt -tail from my #*#*#* This wicked world so out of order (laughs) I don't know how long we can last I'm looking forward to the past I'm looking forward to the past (crowd applauding and cheering) TOMMY: He did it!

(crowd applauding and cheering) He didn't look at the cheat sheet.

(crowd applauding and cheering) We- we have another guest to join us.

Ladies and gentlemen, Eamon McLoughlin on the fiddle.

Yeah!

(crowd applauding and cheering) We had rehearsed and- and done another song.

And then tonight, like an- an hour before the show, he turns up and says, "Let's do this tune."

And I said, "Okay, let's do that tune."

I happen to know it.

Grew up with it the same as he did.

And this is one of the all time greatest Hank Williams tunes.

Yeah.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Honk it baby.

I left my home down on the rural route I told my pa I'm going stepping out And get the honky tonk blues Yeah the honky tonk blues Good lord I got 'em I got the honky tonk blues Well I went to a dance and I wore out my shoes Woke up this morning wishing I could lose The jumping honky tonk blues Yeah, the honky tonk blues Oh lord I got 'em I got the honky tonk blues Hey!

Well I went to a dance and I wore out my shoes Woke up this morning wishing I could lose The jumping honky tonk blues Yeah, the honky tonk blues Yeah Oh lord I got 'em I got the honky tonk blues I'm going to tuck my worries underneath my arm And scat right back to my pappy's farm And leave these honky tonk blues Yeah, the honky tonk blues Oh lord I got 'em I got the honky tonk blues Oh lord I got 'em I got the honky tonk blues (crowd applauding and cheering) Rodney Crowell!

(crowd applauding and cheering) TOMMY: Thank you Hank!

RODNEY: Tommy Emmanuel!

(crowd applauding and cheering) TOMMY: Rodney Crowley.

(crowd applauding and cheering) You did good.

You passed the audition.

(crowd laughing) He's amazing isn't he?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Eamon McLaughlin my very dear friend.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Eamon's from another part of the world as well, and, but you may have seen him on "The Opry" a lot, and- and he plays with Rodney a lot and- and Emmylou as well.

Here's a little set of tunes for you now featuring guitar and fiddle.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Eamon McLaughlin!

(crowd applauding and cheering) Huh?

He didn't drop his bow or go out of tune.

Look at that.

He came on, played perfect and- and went off.

(crowd cheers) (crowd applauding and cheering) (crowd applauding and cheering) Thank you so much.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Now I got the sniffles.

So that's good.

Yeah.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am so honored and thrilled to have so many wonderful people on my show tonight.

And I first heard this young lady sing back in the seventies in Australia and there was a whole new movement of music, and she was right at the arrow tip of that- of that music.

She's an incredible singer, incredible writer, and what a great artist who has inspired so many.

Let's make her welcome Miss Emmylou Harris (crowd applauding and cheering) There she is.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Thank you Emmy.

(crowd applauding and cheering) And to join us, the one and only Eamon McLaughlin and my very dear friend Pat Bergeson on guitar.

(crowd applauding and cheering) The day breaks, your mind aches You find that all her words of kindness Linger on She no longer needs you She wakes up, she makes up She takes her time and doesn't hurry She no longer needs you And in her eyes, you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years You want her, you need her And yet you don't believe her When she says her love is dead You think she needs you She goes out You stay home She says that long ago she knew someone But now he's gone, she doesn't need him And in her eyes, you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years The day breaks, your mind aches There will be times when all the things she said Will fill your head You won't forget her (vocalizing) TOMMY: Emmylou!

(crowd applauding and cheering) One, two, three, four.

Somewhere there's music How faint the tune Somewhere there's heaven How high the Moon There is no moon above When love is far away too Till it comes true You love me as I love you Where there's music How near, how far Somewhere there's heaven That's where you are The darkest night would shine If you would come to me soon Until you will, how still my heart How high the Moon Somewhere there's music How faint the tune Somewhere there's heaven How high the Moon The darkest night would shine If you would come to me soon Until you will, how still my heart How high the Moons The darkest night would shine If you would come to me soon Until you will, how still my heart How high the Moon Emmylou Harris!

(crowd applauding and cheering) EMMYLOU: Thank you everyone.

TOMMY: Emmylou Harris ladies and gentlemen.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Thank you Emmylou.

(crowd applauding and cheering) Eamon McLoughlin, Pat B.
