[ Applause ] [ Water dripping ] [ Wings flapping ] [ Tennis racquet whooshes ] [ Tennis ball thumping ] [ Rotary clicking ] [ Scissors snipping ] [ Car doors shutting ] [ Whistle blowing ] [ Shoes thumping ] [ Car horns blaring ] [ Jackhammer clattering ] [ Percussion instruments playing ] [ Typewriter clacking ] [ Whole band playing ] Day in [ Applause ] Day out That same old voodoo follows me about The same old pounding in my heart Whenever I think of you And, baby, I think of you Day in and day out Day out Day in I needn't tell you how my days begin When I awake, I get up with a tingle One possibility in view That possibility of maybe seeing you Come rain Come shine I meet you and to me the day is fine Then I kiss your lips, and the pounding becomes An ocean's roar A gang of drums Can't you see it's love, can there be any doubt?
When there it is, day in, day out Come rain Come shine I meet you and to me the day is fine Then I grab your lips, and the pounding becomes A very large ocean's roar Just about 9,000 drums Can't you see it's love, can there be any doubt?
When there it is And here it is And there it is day in, day out Day o-u-u-u-u-ut [ Triangle clanging ] [ Applause, music stops ] Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
This is Nancy's father, back for another one of our loving sing-ins.
Now, I guess you might have gathered from that little drum-a-thon we had that you just saw and heard that the subject for tonight's lecture is rhythm, the beat, the driving force that holds our lives together.
Without rhythm, your heart wouldn't beat.
Why, it'd just kind of lie around the house all day listening to Eddie Fisher records.
[ Laughter ] Without rhythm, woodpeckers wouldn't knock.
They'd barge right in.
[ Laughter ] Without rhythm, there'd be no clocks.
If somebody asked you what time it was, you'd say... "Well, it's a quarter to David Niven.
[ Laughter ] Without rhythm, music would kind of wander off into nowhere without direction, without moods, and without shadings.
And so tonight we say hip-hip, chin-chin, and other assorted, uh, hoorahs to the men who make the orchestra come alive -- the rhythm section.
[ Bass cello playing ] Hark, I do believe that it's one of them gentlemen I was speaking about right now.
Everybody, follow that bass.
[ Laughter ] I'm gettin' married in the morning Ding, dong, the bells are gonna chime [ Whole band playing ] Pull out the stopper, we'll have a whopper Get me to the church on time I've got to get there in the morning Spruced up and lookin' in my prime Girls come and kiss me, say that you'll miss me Get me to the church on time If I am dancing, roll up the floor If I am whistling, right out the door I'm getting married in the morning Ding-ding-dong, they're gonna chime Kick up a rumpus, don't lose your compass Get me to the church, get me to the church For Pete's sake, get me to the church on time If I am dancing, roll up the floor If I am whistling, out the door I'm getting married in the morning Ding-ding-dong, they're gonna chime Girls come and kiss me, say that you'll miss me Get me to the church, get me to the church For Pete's sake, get me to the church On ti-i-i-i-ime Ding, dong Ding, dong Ding, dong Ding, dong Ding, dong Ding, dong Ding, dong Ding [ Applause ] What now, my love?
Now that you've left me How can I live Through another day?
Watching my dreams Turn into ashes And my hopes Turn to bits of clay Once I could see Once I could feel Now I am numb I've become unreal I walk the night Without a goal Stripped of my heart My poor heart and soul What now, my love?
Now that it's over I feel the world It's closing in on me Here come the stars Tumbling around me There's the sky Where that sea should be What now, my love?
Now that you're gone I'd be a fool To go on and on No one would care Nobody would cry If I should live If I should live or die What now my love?
Now that there's nothing Only my last My last goodbye Bye-bye [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you.
You know, ladies and gentlemen, in my business, or in our business, when a song lingers on through the years, we call it a standard.
But, uh, there are some songs that transcend the word "standard."
They kind of become classics, like this great song by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II from "Show Boat."
Here we all work 'long the Mississippi Here we all work while the rich folk play Pullin' them boats from the dawn till sunset Gettin' no rest until the Judgment Day Don't look up and don't look down You don't das make the boss man frown Bend your knees and bow your head And pull that rope until you're dead Let me go 'way from the Mississippi Let me go 'way from the white man boss Show me that stream called the river Jordan That's the old stream that I long to cro-o-o-o-oss Ol' man river, that ol' man river He don't say nothin', but he must know somethin' He just keeps rollin', he keeps on rollin' along He don't plant cotton, and he don't plant tatters And them what plants 'em, are soon forgotten But ol' man river just keeps rollin' along You and me, we sweat and strain Body all achin' and racked with pain Tote that barge and lift that bail You get a little drunk and you lands in jai-i-i-i-i-i-il I gets weary and sick of trying I'm tired of livin', but I'm scared of dyin' And ol' man river, he just keeps rollin' A-a-a-a-l-o-o-o-ong [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] Got my suit pressed Got my best vest All I need now is the girl Got my bow tie And my hopes high I got the time and the place, and I got rhythm Now all I need's the girl to go with them And what a girl.
Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Ella Fitzgerald.
[ Cheers and applause ] My heart is sad and lonely For you I sigh, for you, dear, only Why haven't you seen it?
I'm all for you, b-b-body and soul I spend my days in longing And wondering why it's me you're wronging I tell you, I mean it I'm all for you, bo-o-dy and soul I can't believe it It's hard to conceive it That you'd turn away romance Are you pretending?
It looks like the ending Unless, I can have one more chance to prove, dear My life a wreck you're making You know, you know, you know I'm yours for just the taking I'd gladly surrender Myself to you Body and so-o-o-oul Body and so-o-o-o-oul Body-y-y-y and Body and soul [ Cheers and applause ] It's the wrong time and the wrong place Though your face is charming, it's the wrong face It's not his face, but such a charming face That it's all right with me It's the wrong song with the wrong style Though your smile is lovely, it's the wrong smile It's not his smile, but such a lovely smile That it's all right with me You can't know how happy I am that we met I'm strangely attracted to you There's someone I'm trying so hard to forget Don't you want to forget someone, too?
It's the wrong game with the wrong chips Though your lips are tempting, they're the wrong lips They're not his lips but they're such tempting lips That, if some night, you're free Well, it's all right It's all right It's all right with me Oh, yeah Yeah, yeah They're not his lips but they're tasty lips And it's all right with me Oh, ah They're not his lips but they're such sweet-tasting lips that it's all right with me You can't know how happy I am that we met I'm strangely attracted to you There's someone I'm trying so hard to forget Don't you want to forget someone, too?
It's the wrong game with the wrong chips Though your lips are tempting, they're the wrong lips They're not his lips but they're such tempting lips That, if some night, you're free Well, it's all right All right It's a-a-all right with Me-e-e-e-e With me-e-e-e [ Cheers and applause ] I think somebody's been getting to my Kool-Aid.
[ Laughter ] Ella, you are positively bell-like.
Sonorous, mellifluous, and, uh, latissimus dorsis.
[ Laughter ] Latissimus dorsis?
Yeah, a couple of words I had left over from my last physical.
You remember Latissimus Dorsis.
I used to sing with his band.
How could I ever forget?
Ella, would you mind if I join you in a song?
I thought you'd never ask.
What kind of songs are you in a mood for, Frank?
Well, I feel kind of wistful and nostalgic.
In fact, I'm bluish.
Funny.
[ Laughs ] You don't look bluish.
She not only sing better but she's funnier too.
[ Laughter ] Frank, how do you feel about the music the kids is playing today?
Groovy, groovy.
I love it.
As a matter of fact, every generation has its own sound.
In the '20s, they had the Charleston.
After that came swing.
Oh, yes, my parents told me about that.
[ Laughter ] Is there no end to this girl's zingers at me?
But the thing that strikes me, Ella, is that songs actually haven't changed very much, you know?
Mm-hmm.
They sound different and the beat has changed but the tunes basically say the same thing.
And these days, the kids sing about taking trips and getting high and all that jazz, you know?
Oh, we invented that.
Remember?
Do I remember?
I haven't come down yet.
[ Laughter ] Somewhere there's music How faint the tune Somewhere there's heaven How high the moon And today they're still reaching for the moon.
Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon?
Would you like to glide in my beautiful balloon?
We could float among the stars together, you and I For we could [ Whistling ] You think they got anything like this?
Look out, look out Look out for Jimmy Valentine He's a pal of mine, a sentimental sn-crook [ Laughs ] Good old Jimmy Valentine.
I wonder whatever happened to him.
Oh, he's got a whole new look.
Debonair, suave.
And he's the star of a new movie starring Frank Sinatra.
Is that so?
Yeah.
Good old Frank Sinatra.
I wonder whatever happened to him.
Oh, I don't know.
Just lives quietly now.
Never hear much about him.
No, but Tony Rome.
Oh, he's a cat.
Mm-hmm.
He swings.
Mothers, lock your daughters in It's too late to talk to them 'Cause Tony Rome is out Yep.
And about And Tony Rome will get 'em if you don't watch out Tony Rome will get 'em if you don't watch out Yeah, I'm gonna grab 'em if you don't watch out Another type of song that's been around a long time is the name songs, like "Margie," "Ida," "Mary."
And "Sonia."
You remember "Sonia"?
I'm afraid to ask.
Nah.
Sonia?
Sonia.
So'n ya met someone who set you back on your heels Goody, goody Oh, Frank, you're irascible.
Now, if that means "scamp," that's me.
Joey's always been a particular favorite of mine, you know, songs that happen to suggest old Joe.
I got one.
Mm.
Don't cry, Joe Let her go, let her go, let her go Don't cry, Joe Let her go, let her go, let her go But the kids today have got a Joe song that just knocks me out.
I know the one you mean.
Ah, yeah.
It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty day I was out on Choctaw Ridge My brother Bill was balin' ha-a-a-ay And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to e-e-e-eat And Mama hollered out the back door, y'all, remember to wipe your feet Then she said I got some news this mornin' From Choctaw Ri-i-i-idge Today, Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bri-i-i-i-idge Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, I think I'm going out of my head Yes, I think I'm goin' out of my head over you Sing pretty.
Over you I want you to want me I want you I need you so badly I can't think of anything but you Both: Goin' out of my head over you Out of my head over you Out of my head day and night Night and day and night Wrong or right I must think of a way into your heart There's no reason why my being shy should keep us apart Both: And I think I'm goin' out of my head 'Cause I can't explain the tears that I shed O-o-o-over you Over you I see you each morning, but you just walk by me You don't even know that I exist Both: Goin' out of my head over you Out of my head over you Out of my head day and night Night and day and night Wrong or right, day and night Night and day and night Wrong or right, day and night Night and day and night Wrong or right [ Cheers and applause ] Ol.
[ Cheers and applause continue ] [ Guitar strumming ] Quiet nights of quiet stars Quiet chords from my guitar Floating on the silence that surrounds us Quiet thoughts and quiet dreams Quiet walks by quiet streams And a window looking on the mountains and the sea How lovely The instrument -- guitar.
The beat -- bossa nova.
The artist -- One of the inventors of this exciting, all-new sound, Antonio Carlos Jobim.
[ Applause ] [ Vocalizing ] Must you dance every dance with the same fortunate man?
You have danced with him since the music began Won't you change partners and dance with me?
Must you dance quite so close With your lips touching his face?
Can't you see I'm longing to be in his place?
Won't you change partners and dance with me?
Ask him to sit this one out and when you're alone I'll ask the waiter to tell him he's wanted on the telephone You've been locked In his arms Ever since heaven-knows-when Won't you change partners and then You may never want to change partners again [ Vocalizing ] Whenever skies look gray to me And trouble begins to brew Whenever the winter winds, they become too strong I concentrate on you When fortune cries "Nay, nay" to me And people declare "You're through" Whenever the blues become my only song I concentrate on you [ Vocalizing ] Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes Each one she passes goes, "Ah" [ Singing in Portuguese ] Oh, but I watch her so sadly [ Singing in Portuguese ] Yes, I would give my heart gladly Both: But each day, when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at me Tall, tan, young, lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes I smile but she doesn't see [ Singing in Portuguese ] I mean, she just doesn't see [ Singing in Portuguese ] She doesn't see me [ Cheers and applause ] [ Applause ] Both: I hear music when I think of you A beautiful theme of every dream I ever knew The music is sweet And the words are true Both: The song is you-u-u The way you wear your hat The lad's a charmer at that The way you sip your tea A cup of tea suits me The memory of all that Don't quit now No, no, they can't take that away from me The way your smile just beams Do tell, do tell The way you sing off-key I ain't feeling very well The way you haunt my dreams Tell me more No, no, they can't take that away from me We may never, never, never, never, never meet again On that bumpy road to love But I'll always, always, always, always, always Keep the memory of The way you hold your knife One...for two The way we danced until three Oh, the Frug and Boogaloo The way you changed my life Tonight you've changed my tune No, no, they can't take that away from me No, they can't take that away No, they can't take that away Both: No, they can't take that away From me-e-e-e Savoy The home of sweet romance Savoy It wins you at a glance Savoy Gives happy whole feet a dance Savoy Each note as warm as wine And my eyes I love the way they shine You rest, I'll grab another line That's fine, that's fine How my heart is swaying, baby Yeah, yeah, yeah How my heart is swaying While the band is playing I'll never tire of romping and stompin' with you at the Savoy Savoy A perfect holiday Savoy Where we can dance and sway Got a great part.
What joy.
Until the break of day With you Go!
[ Scatting ] [ Scatting continues ] [ Scatting continues ] [ Scatting continues ] [ Applause ] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[ Applause continues ] Thank you.
Beautiful, Ella, beautiful.
Thank you, thank you so much.
Wonderful song by Cole Porter.
You sing it so pretty.
Well, I'm gonna try.
Is it an earthquake or simply a shock?
Is it that good turtle soup or merely the mock?
Is it the cocktail, this feeling of joy?
Or is what I feel What I feel, the real McCoy?
Is it for all time or is it simply a lark?
Is that Granada I see or only Asbury Park?
Is this a fancy not worth thinking of?
Or is it at long Is this at long Is it at long last lo-o-ove?
[ Applause ] You didn't know I could dance.
[ Applause continues ] Your turn.
You didn't know I could dance.
[ Laughter ] Don't cry I ain't gonna cry.
Oh, honey, please don't be that way Clouds in the sky Should never make you feel that way The ra-a-a-a-ain Will bring the violets of May Tears are in vain So, honey, please don't be that way As long as we See it through You'll have me I'll have you Sweetheart Tomorrow is another day Don't break my heart Oh, honey, please don't be that way Don't you cry Honey, don't you be that way Clouds in the sky Should never make you feel that way The ra-a-a-a-a-ain Will bring the violets of May Tears are in vain So, honey, don't be Be that way As long as we See-e-e it through You'll have me And I-I-I-I-I'll have you Sweetheart Tomorrow is another day Don't, don't break my heart Tomorrow is another day [ Vocalizes ] H-H-H-Honey, don't you cry H-H-H-Honey, don't you cry Oh, honey, please Oh, honey, please Don't be that wa-a-a-ay [ Cheers and applause ] It sure do feel good when it's right, don't it?

It ain't my turn.
It's your turn.

[ Applause continues ] So drink up, all of you people Order anything you see And have fun, all you happy people The songs and the drinks were on me Well, sir and ma'am, it's that time again.
I know I've enjoyed it because I don't remember an hour going by as quickly as this one has, and I hope it felt like that to you too.
And I'd like to thank the great artists who helped make the minutes pass so quickly and so deliciously.
First, Mr. Nelson Riddle and our wonderful orchestra, ladies and gentlemen.
[ Applause ] Bravo.
Bravo, bravo, bravo.

And of course from Brazil, the remarkable Antonio Carlos Jobim right here.
Antonio, thank you.
[ Applause ] Bravo, bravo.
And nothing else I can say except the phenomenal Miss Ella Fitzgerald.
[ Applause ] I love you.
Thank you.
Put your dreams away for another day And I will take their place in your heart Wishing on a star never got you far And so it's time to make a new start When your dreams at night Fade before you Then I'll have the right To adore you Let your kiss confess This is happiness, darling And put all your dreams away Sleep warm, good night.
