Sinatra in Concert at Royal Festival Hall
[ Applause ] >> Few people become legends in their own lifetime -- win an Academy Award, numerous other awards, and countless golden discs.
How many of us in the audience have a favorite Sinatra number, and how many of them are different?
Well, that's Sinatra, the artist.
But I'd like to tell you a little bit about Sinatra, the man -- generous and warm-hearted.
And I think about a Christmas that I spent in East Africa quite a few years ago when I was making a film there with Clark Gable and Ava Gardner.
And Frank was with us.
And it was getting near Christmastime, and I think we were all a little glum and gloomy about being away from home and loved ones.
So Frank decided to take Christmas in hand.
He disappeared for a few days and then returned from Nairobi with, I think, just about every Christmas ornament the city contained -- and the one Santa Claus suit.
I think they tried to offer him a few capes for Father Christmas, but he wouldn't accept that.
And he came back to the bush where we were on safari.
And Christmas Eve, we gathered in the clearing under the starry African sky.
And there in the center was a huge, big mantelpiece.
Frank even talked John Ford into reciting "The Night Before Christmas" to us, and this wonderful evening ended with 60 Congolese Africans barefooted with their blankets around them singing French Christmas carols.
It was a wonderful Christmas, thanks to Frank.
Frank and I made one film together, "High Society".
[ Applause ] ...where I even had the nerve to sing a song.
Of course, I was slightly supported by...Bing Crosby.
And that reminds me of a story.
I suppose I can tell it.
One time, Frank was in Monaco for a benefit for children, and he came to visit us.
And there, proudly displayed, was a golden disc.
And I don't know if you're aware of this, but if a song sells over a million copies, the company gives you a golden disc.
And when Frank saw that, he said, "Whose is that?"
And I said, "Mine."
He said, "How did you get that?"
I said, "High Society."
He said, "Well, I was in that picture, and I didn't get one."
[ Laughter ] Then he turned to my husband, and he said, "How do you like that?
She opens her mouth once and gets a golden record, and I've been knocking myself out for 20 years and don't have one."
Of course, that was long before "Strangers in the Night" and the many others that followed.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Frank Sinatra.
[ Applause ] >> Thank you, Princess.
[ Applause continues ] What a press agent.
[ Laughter ] Just raise your hand, watch -- see what happens.
[ "You Make Me Feel So Young" plays ] You make me feel so young You make me feel like spring's sprung Every time I see you grin I'm such a happy individual The moment that you speak I want to run, play hide and seek I wanna go and bounce the moon Just like a big balloon You and I We are just like a couple of tots Running along the meadow Snatchin' up all those forget-me-nots You make me feel so young You make me feel there are songs to be sung Bells to be rung And a wonderful spring to be sprung And even when I'm old and gray I'm gonna feel the way I do, today 'Cause you make me feel so young You make me young You make me feel spring's sprung Every time I see you grin I'm such a happy individual The moment that you speak I wanna run, play hide and seek I like to go and bounce the moon Just like a big balloon Because you and I We are just like a couple of tots Dashing about the meadow Snappin' up all those forget-me-nots You make me young You make me feel there are songs to be sung Like bells to be rung And a wonderful fling to be flung And even when I'm old and gray I'm gonna feel the way I do, today Because you make me feel so Yeah, man, I feel so You make me feel so young, babe You make me feel so young [ Applause ] [ "Pennies From Heaven" plays ] Oh, yeah, lock that up.
Every time it rains It rains pennies from heaven Don't you know each cloud contains Pennies from heaven?
You'll find your fortune's fallin' All over the town Be sure that your umbrella Is upside down Trade them for a package of Sunshine and flowers If you want the things you love You got to have showers And when you hear it thunder Don't run under a tree Oh, there'll be pennies from heaven For you and me Every time Every time it rains, it's gonna rain Pennies from heaven Don't you know Don't you know, each cloud contains Pennies from heaven You'll find your fortune's fallin' All over the town Be sure, be sure Your umbrella is laying there And it's wrong-side down Don't you know What the hell's the next line?
Sunshine and flowers If you want the things that you love You got to have lots of showers And when you hear it thunder Don't run under the tree There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me For you and for you and for you and Me [ Applause ] [ "I've Got You Under My Skin" plays ] Thank you.
Cole Porter by way of Nelson Riddle.
I've got you under my skin I have got you deep in the heart of me So deep in my heart that you are a part of me I've got you under my skin I have tried so, tried, tried not to give in I have said to myself this affair Is not gonna move so well But why should I try to resist When, baby, I know damn well?
I've got you under my skin I'd sacrifice anything come what might For the sake of having you near In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night And repeats, it repeats, it repeats, it repeats Don't you know, you fool You're not gonna win Use your mentality Wake up to reality And each time I do, just the thought of you Makes me stop before I begin 'Cause I've got you Shh Under my skin Yeah Leave some place to go, baby.
The Nine Fusiliers, here they are.
I would sacrifice anything come what might For the sake of having you near In spite of a warning voice It comes in the night And repeats and screams in my ear Don't you know, you fool You got no way to win?
Why not use your mentality Wake up, step up to reality And each time I do Just the thought of you makes me stop Just before I begin 'Cause I've got you Under my skin And I love you Under my skin [ Applause ] Thank you.
[ "Something in the Way She Moves" plays ] Something in the way she moves Attracts me like no other lover Something in the way she woos me I don't want to leave her now You know I believe, and how Doo doo doo doo Somewhere in her smile, she knows That I don't need no other lover Something in the way she shows me I don't want to leave her now You'd better believe it now You're asking me will my love grow I don't know No, I don't know You hang around, Jack, it may show I don't know I don't know Something in the way she knows That I don't need no other lover Something in her style that shows me I don't want to leave her now No, no, baby You'd better believe it now You're asking me will my love grow I don't know I don't know You hang around, man, it may show But I don't know No, I don't know Something in the way she knows me All I got to do is think of her Something in the things she shows me I don't want to leave her now You'd better believe it now Don't want to leave her now [ Applause ] Thank you.
[ Speaks indistinctly ] Thank you.
Gee, that's a good song.
That's something.
If I ever get to learn that, I'll be a smash.
This is an old chestnut that you've heard many times.
We just can't leave this out, ever.
[ "The Lady Is a Tramp" plays ] By one of my favorite girls.
She gets hungry for dinner at 8:00 Loves the theatre Doesn't come late I thought Vaudeville died.
Anyone else That's why "Anyone else?"
Is a tramp Doesn't like dice games With barons and earls Won't go to Harlem In ermine and pearls Will not dish the dirt With the rest of those girls That's why the lady, she's a tramp She loves the free, warm wind in her hair Life without care She's broke, but it's okay Dislikes California It's foggy and damp That's why the lady is a tramp She gets much too hungry To wait there for dinner at 8:00 She adores the theatre However doesn't arrive late She'd never mess With a crumb that she'd hate That's why, that's why That's why she's a tramp Hey Doesn't like crap games Played with a bunch of sharpies and frauds Never makes a trip up to Harlem Drivin' shiny Lincolns or Fords And she won't dish the dirt With the rest of those broads That's why this chick is a tramp She loves the free, fine, wild, cool, cool night All that, mmm, groovy wind in her hair Life's without a care She's broke Ha ha!
She loathes California Because it's cold and it's damp That's why the lady, mmm That's why the lady That's why the lady is a tramp [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you.
Thank you.
We should call this next segment... "Songs for Losers."
[ "I Get Along Without You Very Well" plays ] These are songs of unrequited love.
Girls running away from home and all that kind of jazz.
I get along without you Very well Of course I do Except when soft rains fall And drip from leaves Then I recall The thrill of being sheltered in your arms Of course, I do But I get along without you Very well I've forgotten you Just like I should Of course I have Except to hear your name Or someone's laugh that sounds the same Yes, I've forgotten you Just like I should What a guy What a fool am I To think my breaking heart Could kid the moon What's in store?
Shall I phone once more?
No, it's best That I stick to My tune I get along without you Very well Of course I do Except perhaps in spring But I should never think of spring 'Cause that would surely break my heart In two [ Applause ] Didn't they play that bluesy?
Thank you.
Thank you.
Oh, they played that high.
Oh, oh!
Thank you.
This is Jimmy Webb and one of his very quiet, nice moments.
[ "Didn't We" plays ] This time we nearly made the pieces fit Didn't we, girl?
This time we nearly made a go of it Didn't we, girl?
This time I held the answer right here in my hand Then I touched it And it had turned to sand This time we almost sang our song in tune Didn't we, girl?
This time we nearly made it to the moon Didn't we, girl?
This time we almost, almost made our poem rhyme And this time We almost made that long, hard climb Didn't we almost make it?
This time?
This time?
[ Applause ] Thank you.
That ought to make 'em cry a little bit.
Now, of course, we come to the tail end of our songs for losers.
And I'd like to do something that I think is the daddy of all of these kind of songs for you.
And for you.
Unfortunately, I can't face you at all during this song because this is my great dramatic moment in this song.
Ha ha, you may laugh.
You may very well laugh.
Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen wrote this song some 155 years ago.
They were probably bombed at the time, because you have to be to write this kind of a song.
This is truly not only a song, it's a dramatic adventure.
When you read the lyrics even without music, they say a great deal.
This typifies the young man who's had a lot of problems with his mouse -- uh, girl, and she flew the coop.
And he proceeds for four or five days to get himself properly swacked until he realizes that it's getting him nowhere, and he's gonna try to get back and face the rest of us humans.
And he's looking for a small bar.
And he finds a bar where there's no one except the bartender.
[ "One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)" plays ] It's quarter to 3:00 [ Applause ] No one in the place 'Cept you and me Set 'em up, Joe I've got a little story I think you ought to know We're drinking, my friend To the end Of a brief episode Make it one for my baby And one more for the road I know the routine Put another nickel In the machine I feel kind of bad Can't you make the music Easy and sad?
I could tell you a lot But it's not In the gentleman's code One for my baby And one more for the road You'd never know it But, buster, I'm a kind of poet And I got a lot of things I'd like to say Mmm.
If I'm gloomy Please listen to me Till it's talked away Well... That's how it goes And, Joe, I know you're getting Anxious to close Thanks for the beer I hope you didn't mind My bending your ear But this torch that I've found It's gotta be drowned Or it's gonna explode Make it one for my baby And one more for the road The long The long God, it's long [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm about to do something rather unusual in doing a brand-new song.
But I think it would be fun to do it here because it was written here not too long ago.
And, recently, we made a recording of it in Los Angeles.
And it was written by a boy who belongs to a couple of awfully dear friends of mine.
And we think it's gonna be a big hit.
He's a youngster, and I think he's got great talent.
This is called -- I'd like to dedicate this to Dean Martin.
It's called "I Will Drink the Wine"... [ Laughter and applause ] ...by Paul Ryan.
[ "I Will Drink the Wine" plays ] Someone said drink the water But I will drink the wine Someone said take a poor man Rich folks don't have a dime Go fool yourselves if you will I just haven't got the time Yeah, you can drink the water And I will drink the wine Someone gave me some small flowers I held them in my hand Looked at those flowers for hours I didn't understand Go fool yourselves if you will You can hold out your hand I'll give you back your flowers And I will take the land And I will drink the wine Sometimes I'm very, very lonely With only me to care And when I'm very, very lonely I want someone to share I will drink the wine Gonna take my time And believe in a world That is mine Someone gave me flowers Held them in my hand Looked at them for hours I didn't understand Go on and fool yourselves if you will You can hold out your hand I'll give back your flowers And I will take the land And I will drink the wine And I will take the land And I will drink the wine [ Applause ] Mr. Paul Ryan.
Stand up.
There's our young... [ Applause continues ] Marvelous stuff.
You do a sequel, you say, "I will drink the Daniels."
[ Laughter ] Oh, here's something quite lovely, folks.
We got a lot of cards and letters about this one.
[ "I Have Dreamed" plays ] This is from "The King and I."
Formerly known as Yul Brynner and me.
[ Laughter ] I have dreamed that your arms were lovely I have dreamed what a joy you'll be I have dreamed every word you'll whisper When you're close Close to me How you look In the glow of evening I have dreamed And enjoyed the view In these dreams I've loved you so That by now I think I know What it's like To be loved by you I will love being loved By you In these dreams I've loved you so That by now I think I know What it's like to be loved by you I will love being loved By you [ Applause ] I hurt from this stuff right there.
Here's something I think you know quite well.
Maybe not the verse, but the chorus you do.
What do you say, Gene, baby?
[ "My Kind of Town" plays ] Now this could only happen to a guy like me And only happen in a town like this And so I say to each of you most gratefully Boom, boom, boom As I throw you all a kiss Last time I did that, I had a shoulder separation.
This is my kind of town Chicago is My kind of town Chicago is My kind of people, too People who Smile at you And each Each time I roam Chicago is It's calling me home Chicago is It makes me jump up and down This is my kind of town Go, get 'em!
Get 'em!
Sic 'em, sic 'em, yeah!
Well!
You better believe this is my kind of town Chicago is My kind of town Chicago is My kind of razzmatazz And it has all that jazz And each time I roam Chicago is It's callin' me back home Chicago is The Wrigley building Chicago is The Union Stockyard Chicago is One town that will never let you down It's my All of it is my My kind of town Chicago, Chicago, Chicago My kind of town Chicago [ Applause ] Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Apres vous, monsieur.
That means, "Go, baby."
[ "My Way" plays ] [ Applause ] And now, the end is near And so I face the final curtain My friend, I'll make it clear I'll state my case, of which I'm certain I've lived a life that's full I've traveled each and every highway And more Much more than this, I did it My way Regrets, I've had a few But then again, too few to mention I did what I had to do I saw it through without exemption I planned each charted course Each careful step Along the byway And more Much more than this I did it my way Yes, there were times I guess you knew When I bit off more than I could chew And through it all, where there was doubt I ate it up Then spit it out I stood tall through it all And did it my way I've loved I've laughed and cried I've had my fill My share of losing But now, as tears subside I find it all so amusing To think I did all that And may I say, not in a shy way No No, not me I did it my way For what is a man What has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught To say the things he truly feels And not the words of one who kneels The record shows I took the blows And did it my way My Way [ Cheers and applause ]
