Professor T

(somber music) (rustling) (dramatic music) How is he?

The rituals are taking longer.

I think they're blocking the grieving process, but... he won't talk about it.

Adelaide would be glad you're here.

Oh, that's... that's good to hear.

I did some research.

There's a highly respected OCD specialist based just outside of Cambridge.

I can give you the link.

Please.

(up tempo music playing) Stan!

The guests are arriving.

Kendrick!

Is this the lady?

Yes, it is.

Ah, hello.

-Aah, how are you?

-Oh, good, how are you?

-Oh, my God, you look good.

Thank you.

I know.

This is Kendrick who looks much better.

Hello, it's so nice to properly finally meet you.

Oh, are you ready for your mental detox?

I think, uh, I think Stan might be ready for us.

Oh.

(up tempo music continues) Scarlet, nice to see you again.

You too.

(background chatter) -Scarlet.

-Billy.

-Hello.

-Hello.

This is Kendrick.

-Hello Kendrick.

-Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you.

Oh, Stan.

Stan.

This is Kendrick.

It's his first time at Highwater.

First of many, hopefully.

Excited to be here.

I'm Stan.

Uh, yeah, I got that.

Hey, Stan.

Remember me?

Florence.

(unsettling music) Ah.

Where's Billy?

(laughs) Is everybody in?

Let the ceremony begin.

Man: Great.

(applause) (spiritual music playing) Woman: I am strong.

(echoes) We are strong.

(echoes) I am mighty.

(echoes) The circle cannot be broken.

(echoes) Man: The circle cannot be broken!

(echoes) -Let the magic flow.

-Let the magic flow!

Let the magic flow!

(echoes) Let the magic flow!

Let the magic flow!

Let the magic flow!

Let the magic flow!

(woman screams) (fire crackling) Oh, are you alright?

(dramatic music) Come on.

I'm okay.

We're okay.

No biggie.

Everyone chill for five.

More wood for the fire.

We should call an ambulance.

He's alright.

No ambulance needed.

-Look at him.

-No ambulance.

He's gonna be fine.

We're okay.

I am strong!

(fades out) We are strong.

I am mighty!

We are strong!

(gentle music) (siren blaring) (muttering) (crow cawing) (quiet chatter) -Prof T: Aunt Zelda?

-In here.

Are you decent?

Depends what you mean by decent.

What was so urgent that you required my presence tout suite?

-This.

I'd never forgive myself if it got broken.

Your mother insisted you should have it.

Said she put it on the landing to keep you in your room.

Hm.

Well, when I gaze upon it, I shall think of you.

Oh, and you can take this as well.

Photographs.

Hundreds of them.

No idea who anyone is.

(Prof T sighs) Why is it that when you tell some people you do not wish to discuss something... And by some people you mean...?

Jasper... Are you asking for help?

Absolutely not.

The thing you need to know about women is... They do not listen.

No, no.

We listen very carefully, which is why we hear things that are felt, but not said.

I need to go.

Take the box.

I do not wish to look at my mother's old photographs.

What about this?

Or that ceramic atrocity.

I have some news.

The hospital called.

Our friend Kendrick Mailer has passed on.

(sighs) When I close my eyes, I see a beautiful young man dancing, smiling, his heart open to a new experience.

Let us take a moment to transmit love.

Let him know as he ascends to a place of peace, a place of joy, that he is in our thoughts.

(somber music) Maiya: The pathologist is waiting for toxicology and a full body MRI.

But she said the cause of death was intracranial hematoma.

Well, the paramedics said he fell while he was dancing.

Hm.

But apparently he had an abnormally thin skull.

And just here around the bruising, there's a large buildup of blood.

Well, allegedly he said he felt fine.

He refused to go to the hospital.

And he was alive this morning.

Maiya: He might have been breathing, but the damage had been done.

(mysterious music) Please, come in.

Thank you.

-DS Winters.

-Hi.

-DC Highsmith.

-Hello.

Welcome to Highwater Hall.

The welcome is warm, but the circumstances are somber.

I'm Scarlet.

My indispensable helpmeet.

The guests are all aware of what happened.

They're happy to talk.

Dan: Did Kendrick arrive here alone?

He came with Billy.

Billy Armstrong, he's down by the lake with Flo.

Scarlet, you'll fetch him, please.

-Of course.

-Thank you.

Please, follow me.

(playful music) Yeah, so on the first night we always have the circle dance.

Kendrick lost his balance.

I look round, Flo's trying to help him up.

How was Kendrick after he fell?

He said the chants sounded echoey.

Why didn't anyone call an ambulance?

Well, he was like, "What?

Five hours in A&E when I should be here?"

And there was no chance of any drug use, alcohol?

No alcohol, no drugs.

This is a purely spiritual gathering of body and soul.

Lady Cynthia insists.

She won't even allow sugar in your tea.

They're all saying the same thing.

He fell, refused help, he died.

Apparently Lady Cynthia's pretty uncompromising when it comes to sugar.

Yeah.

-She also takes their phones.

-Mm.

Digital detox.

One of 'em told me I should try it.

Apparently I've got phone face.

Do you think it's a...cult?

Cult of part-time hippies.

Yeah, but you can't just pay to join.

You have to be invited.

Billy invited Kendrick and Flo.

Are you staying for supper?

I am making my famous strawberry daiquiris.

-No.

-Alcohol free.

-We'll be heading off.

-Oh, is that it?

Unless the toxicology report throws up any anomalies.

Well, if it does, you are more than welcome.

We haven't spoken to the mini bus driver yet.

Stan?

Oh, you can't miss out Stan.

Does he take part in the ritual?

(chuckles) He'd be tucked up in bed, but he'll sulk if you don't speak to him.

Second floor.

He's made a nest for himself in one of the box rooms.

After you.

(suspenseful music) (knocking on door) Stan?

(mysterious music) Sugar?

I thought Lady Cynthia didn't allow sugar.

Oh... (laughs softly) Yes, yes, I'll have one, thanks.

I'm alright, thank you.

So Stan, you work here?

If it needs doing, I do it.

Oh!

Snap.

Do you know why we're here?

Chap had a fall.

I think he died.

That's right.

(spoon clinking) And where were you when it happened?

Where I always am.

Which is?

In here.

The medicine dance starts, it's time for bed.

The medicine dance?

Time for bed said Zebedee.

(mysterious music) Thank you.

Why, uh, why'd you call it the medicine dance?

Because it makes people better.

Don't tell Lady Cynthia.

What would she say if she caught you?

Don't tell her.

(sirens blaring) -Chloe: Morning.

– Dan: Morning.

Maiya: Morning.

Thank you.

So, how was your day communing with the free spirits?

A lot of rich kids trying to 'find themselves'.

Well, the toxicology report came in for Kendrick Mailer, the lad who fell.

And there's no drugs, no alcohol in his system.

But the path report found a broken ossicle in the left ear.

That's probably why he said the chants sounded echoey.

There's damage to the left ear.

There's a head injury to the right parietal.

There's a strong possibility that this Kendrick fell after an assault.

I want you to go back, find the cracks, dig in, prise them open.

-Hey, how's it going, mate?

-Keep it down.

Does Leonie's old man know she's dating an officer of the law?

Hang on.

I'll catch you up.

-What's he done?

-What I've done or what they're saying I've done?

Intent to supply.

Alright.

Yeah, I bet she hasn't told her dad.

You know, a cop killed his brother.

Alright, calm down, love.

(playful music) Zelda: But as you know, I promised my sister I would act as guide and mentor to my nephew.

But I don't need to tell you that, well... -He won't listen.

-Yes.

That's why I need your help.

You want my help?

Well, only because you've known him, like, forever and, well, I've had a, I've had a life to lead.

Charming.

Adelaide was keenly aware that Helena was good for him.

However, I have of late witnessed a relationship under stress.

You want me to advise him?

Well, when it comes to the art of love, I am something of an expert.

Gold star for perseverance.

Meanwhile, you might be better suited to logistics.

-Logistics?

-Mm-hm, yep.

Jasper!

-Aunt Zelda.

Have you discovered a sudden passion for criminology?

Jasper, I'm going to be very frank with you.

Helena is a fine woman.

Do you wish me to respond?

No, I want you to listen.

If you want to keep her, you need to take some advice.

A man should never seat a woman facing the wall.

Never raise your voice.

A gentleman never kisses on the first date.

I can see why you never married.

Any respectable woman will only marry for love.

And keep marrying until she finds it.

Uh, if you'll excuse me, I'm requested to give the police my advice.

I think he got the message.

So, an anomaly has arisen?

I'm afraid so.

This is our consultant, Professor Jasper Tempest.

Professor of what?

Psychological criminology.

Ah, I'm in the presence of a rival shaman.

Am I to know the nature of this anomaly?

We'll come to that.

We're gonna need a couple of rooms.

At your service.

So, how long have you been running these, um... Spiritual retreats.

30 years this summer.

-And why did you... -We needed the money.

Without some form of income, we would've been forced to sell.

The anomaly... I should point out that I do also help people.

(mysterious music) Many of my guests have been with me on this journey from the start.

Your guests have been lying.

Been coming here for about five years now.

The first time was just after my mother died.

Chloe: It's not cheap, coming here.

My, uh, mum, she got knocked down by a police car.

I've got compensation money.

Sorry.

You weren't driving.

How did you find out about Highwater Hall?

Uh, Lady Cynthia got in touch, offered me a free holiday.

Whose decision was it not to call an ambulance?

Kendrick's.

He wasn't capable of deciding what was best, was he?

Kendrick was hit round the side of the head.

Did you see who did it?

It didn't happen.

He got dizzy and fell over.

That's it.

Well, the postmortem shows that Kendrick Mailer sustained injuries consistent with being assaulted prior to his fall.

Really?

Is that what they're saying?

Tell me, Officer, isn't there the slightest possibility that Kendrick might have incurred this injury before he came here?

Isn't that more likely than the idea that all of my guests are lying?

(suspenseful music) (suspenseful music intensifies) Used to be scared of these.

How long have you worked here?

If it needs doing, I do it.

Sorry.

Am I interrupting?

Not at all.

We were making inconsequential small talk.

I have to say... a few luminous moments apart, I have had no real clairvoyant experiences, but watching you arrive... you were trailed by an aura.

I hope you don't mind me asking, has a life changing event recently occurred?

22 days ago, my mother died.

Um... That would explain it.

The cosmos never forgets.

(echoes of a dog barking) (barking echoes continue) (phone ringing) Helena.

Yesterday you said that Kendrick told you he was hearing echoes.

Who hit him?

No one.

(sighs) If that ambulance had have been called, Kendrick might still be alive.

(poignant music) I wanted to.

Who stopped you?

(poignant music intensifies) Florence... Sorry to interrupt, we're going to need this room.

We're holding Kendrick's memorial here.

We can continue this at the station.

I need to be here.

Okay.

Just, if you remember anything.

(somber music) Helena, there is nothing that an OCD specialist can tell me... Oh, I know.

I know that you think... that I do not know already.

Look I, I... Kafka?

(suspenseful music) Kafka?

(barking echoes) (suspenseful music intensifies) Mother?

(sinister music) (barking echoes) (sinister music continues) (barking echoes) (sinister music intensifies) Professor... Are you lost?

I thought I, um... Have you seen a little dog?

I don't allow dogs.

Do you think it might have been an embodiment of something?

Well, I heard it barking, um... When you arrived this morning, as I already intimated, you were accompanied by a powerful presence.

(Cynthia sighs) So many unresolved issues.

Doesn't anyone recently bereaved have unresolved issues?

Jasper... dear boy... (suspenseful music) you have a scar just here on the back of your head.

You were knocked off your bike when you were seven years old.

I know this the way one knows things in a dream.

And you have visions, I know you do.

I did.

I mean, I had visions.

I thought they had gone.

(dramatic music crescendo) Cynthia: You think you're here to find the truth.

But you're looking for the wrong truth.

(suspenseful music) (clock ticking) Something inside you is dying.

Need a hand?

Brown trout, for the visitors.

Nice.

Cook it on the bonfire before the dance.

The medicine dance.

(suspenseful music) The rope that connects the living to the dead.

(music swells) Thanks.

(gentle lounger bar music) You know, when I got your text, 'Sorry, working.'

I thought, wow, I'm getting the brush-off here.

Why didn't you tell me about your dad?

Who talks about their dad on their first date?

You know what I'm saying.

My dad got burned.

Nine years in prison.

That must've been tough, your dad in prison.

I should have told you right off.

I didn't want to scare you away.

You wouldn't scare me away.

Thanks.

Uh, he, he runs his own business now.

Imports cosmetics.

Uh, you know the King's Hedges drop-in center?

Yeah, for, for drug addicts.

He helps to fund that.

His company's doing really well.

Yeah, I saw his car when he picked you up.

Ah... Yeah, it's a magnet for traffic cops.

Well, he should get a family saloon.

And lose the personalized number plates.

We okay?

Yeah.

Yeah, we're okay.

So, did you just totally forget that we were gonna try the Indonesian?

I forgot.

Well, I brought some anyway.

I have already eaten.

Oh... Okay.

(operatic music playing) (sighs) Jasper, could you at least have a glass of wine or something?

Um, I shall have a glass of water.

Um, are you aware that you hung up on me rather abruptly this afternoon?

Did I?

Yes.

We were talking about the specialist.

The OCD specialist.

-Yes.

I... saw something.

Are you gonna tell me what it was?

(sighs) I saw my mother.

Oh... Well, that makes sense.

I mean, everything is connected.

So, this vision, and the spike in your compulsive behavior.

What worries me is that, you know, if you, if you don't accept help, then comorbidities could start to engulf you.

-Comorbidities?

-Yeah.

Anxiety, depression.

Intrusive thoughts.

My current relapse has nothing to do with my mother.

Well, what then?

The smell of that food is making me want to wretch.

Well, if it has nothing to do with your mother, then what is it?

I do not wish to discuss it.

And I refuse to be back in the relation of client to your therapist.

Jasper, what do you imagine I get out of this?

I mean, does it ever cross your mind that for any relationship to work, there has to be some, some mutual give and take?

I don't want to be your therapist either.

I wanted to be your lover.

(operatic music playing) I think it's just better if I go.

Wait... Helena... Helena.

Helena?

(glass thudding) Helena!

(glass thudding) Helena!

(fire crackling) (threatening music) Let us all partake, so that we might honor the memory and spirit of our friend Kendrick, while scrupulously maintaining the security and sanctity of this holy place.

(music swells) (police radio chatter) (knocking) Come in.

Oh... Hello, Ma'am.

Um, I've been thinking about what you said.

Uh, I checked out Chester Vass and it's all legit.

His business, the drop-in center.

He helps people.

So did Ronnie and Reggie Kray.

Trying to impress the judge with their 'charitable work'.

But they were still brutal psychopaths.

Yeah.

I mean, people can change.

Do you know about his brother?

Uh, yeah, I do.

He died in custody.

It was my old nick and I was on duty.

And Wesley Vass was violent and loaded.

We got him into the cell and he had a heart attack and keeled over.

That was the end of the story.

But then the family accused us of killing him and covering it up.

Dan, you do realize this whole thing could be a setup.

(suspenseful music) I mean, does Leonie strike you as the kind of girl who hangs around an old man's pub?

You might be getting played.

And as you breathe in and out... I want you to focus your attention to the sounds that you can hear outside the room.

(suspenseful music) You shouldn't be in here.

I needed my phone.

Put your phone back.

You need Cynthia's permission.

Put it back.

(struggling) Ah!

(gasping) (phone ringing) DC Highsmith?

Hi, it's Florence.

Flo.

Hi.

I'm leaving the retreat.

I want to make a statement.

Yeah, yeah, I can, I can... I can come get you.

I have my car.

I'll be there in 40 minutes.

Okay.

(street humming) (knocking on door) Zelda: Come in.

(door opens) -Ah, you're back for Hume.

-Hume?

I discovered the monkey's name.

-Look.

-Hmm.

Photo of Hume with your mother.

She's written his name on the back.

Ah.

So much of Adelaide's life I had no idea about.

There's one of her with Keith Moon, for goodness' sake.

I can scarcely believe I am saying this, but, um...I'm here for advice.

Relationship advice?

Regrettably, yes.

(light-hearted music) If I'm to help you, you have to tell me where you're up to.

-Up to?

-With Helena.

I saw you dancing at our wedding.

Have you... kissed?

No.

Do you, um... Do you pay her compliments?

Well, I have expressed admiration for her academic achievements.

-Yeah.

What about the way she looks?

Do you say for example, uh... Helena, you look absolutely ravishing today.

Of course not.

What prompted you to come here?

Helena seems to require answers to questions, things that I'm not ready to divulge.

Jasper, there is one thing without which no healthy relationship can survive.

Emotional honesty.

You have to be able to tell Helena how you feel.

Where did you get this?

Jasper, did you hear what I said?

I'm standing right here, of course I did.

Oh, I found it about five minutes ago.

Adelaide with Lady Cynical.

Hm.

Lady Cynthia.

Oh, you were correct.

My mother has written 'Lady Cynical'.

It seems she is trying to solve this case from beyond the grave.

-Could you call me a taxi?

-Sure.

A double first from Cambridge University.

Does my mother mention that to the lady of the manor?

No.

I fell off my bike.

That is what she talks about.

(phone ringing, vibrating) Flo?

(panicked breathing) Florence?

I'm being followed.

Who?

Who-who's following you?

(screams) No!

Flo?

Florence?!

(sinister music) Um, we...we, we have to go.

Flo just called.

She, she screamed.

The line went dead.

We have to go.

(tires crunching) (sinister music intensifies) Stan: The rope that connects the living to the dead... Billy: Flo!

Flo!

Where are you?

Uh, could you stop the car please?

Billy: Flo?!

(high tempo music) Flo!

Flo... Billy... Stan comes here to fish.

He's, um, wanted back at the hall.

I... You drove the mini bus?

-Yes.

-Hm.

Quite a distance for Stan to walk.

Yeah, well, he, uh, he loves fishing.

Hm.

So, you assumed that you'd find him here?

Yeah.

Even though his equipment is still in the mini bus?

(sinister music) (sirens blaring) Dan: We're looking for a young woman, Florence Wray, brown hair, mid-20s, average height.

We've got a warrant for the whole property, so every bush, all the outhouses, leave no stone unturned, okay?

Every second counts.

I hope you don't mind me asking, as you wreck my home and shred the tranquility of my guests, how long is this going to take?

It will take as long as it takes.

Flo told Billy she was upset about Kendrick.

She decided to go home.

Did you bother to call her or was your first instinct to send for the goon squad?

(suspenseful music) (police chatter) (dogs barking) Florence wanted to talk yesterday before Lady Cynthia interrupted.

Florence Wray, I think we can assume, was about to reveal that the rituals here center around the use of ayahuasca.

It is a class A drug, hence the uniform denial.

It was imperative that 12 hours passed before Kendrick Mailer received medical attention... To make sure that the drugs had left his system.

Exactly.

Flo wanted to call an ambulance.

Someone stopped her.

Well, hang on.

The search team found nothing, right?

No traces of drugs in the house or the grounds.

Lady Cynthia runs a tight ship.

Where'd you pull ayahuasca from?

Ten years in the job, I've never once come across it.

Yesterday in our encounter with Stan, he referred to the medicine as 'a rope between the living and the dead'.

In the Quechua language, 'aya' means ancestor, 'huasca' means rope.

-If you're right... -I am.

...that means that Flo is a threat to everybody here.

-If she's alive.

-Yeah.

-Right.

We're making arrests.

-Yeah.

(suspenseful music) Professor Tempest saw you down by the river.

I was looking for Stan.

Billy, we think you went to the river looking for Flo.

If she was in trouble, you would want to help.

Of course.

Come on Billy, we're losing time.

Billy...are you scared of Lady Cynthia?

Billy is not ready to let go of his mother.

His mother?

His surrogate mother.

I should talk with him.

Uh, no.

A young woman is missing.

Time is running out.

Does that not obviate the luxury of correct procedure?

(door squeaks, slams) Billy: W-what am I doing here?

Three weeks ago, my mother died.

As you no doubt recall, such an event changes everything.

I was at my most vulnerable and Lady Cynthia exploited this.

She invaded the grieving process for her own ends.

Purely to distract me from investigating the death of your friend Kendrick.

You're wrong.

Lady Cynthia is the kindest person I have ever known.

(suspenseful music) I, um... I found this today amongst my mother's things.

I assume she saw my mother's obituary in the local paper, remembered her, and then recognized my surname.

She used my mother's death just as she used yours.

Knowing that you had been awarded compensation, she preyed on your grief.

She just wanted your money.

Lady Cynthia may have taken the place of your mother, but you have other loyalties.

You were not able to prevent Kendrick's death, but you can save Flo.

(dramatic music) I...I saw Cynthia and Stan.

She was angry.

This is a big problem, do you understand?

Florence has to go, and she does not come back.

By the time I got to the car park, Flo's car was gone.

And so was Stan.

I took the mini bus.

Stan took Flo because Cynthia told him to?

He shot his dog because its barking annoyed her.

(poignant music) So Stan, do you recognize this person?

Florence.

That's right, Florence, yeah.

And can you, can you tell me, when was the last time you saw her?

I can't do this...I can't... (knocking on door) (door opens) Ma'am?

Is that Stan?

November '92.

Lord Stansfield.

Lady Cynthia's taken him for everything.

She's not from money.

Her father's unknown, her mum's a cleaner.

Stan had a mental collapse after an ayahuasca addiction and Cynthia's been controlling him ever since.

I can't!

I let her down!

Stan, listen to me.

It's okay.

Who did you let down?

Cynthia.

She told me to 'deal with her'.

(sobbing) (somber music) (Stan gasps) Stan, what did you do to her?

(sobbing, wailing) Stan, what did you do?

(dramatic music) Officer: Two seven five to control.

Subject located, requesting EMS.

You alright, love?

Kendrick was off his face.

(sobbing) First time, you don't know how ayahuasca's going to hit you.

And I kept asking him to stop.

(chanting) Let the magic flow!

Billy came over and grabbed him by the shoulder, barely touched him.

But Kendrick fell.

Why didn't I do the right thing?

You did.

When it was too late.

She told me to 'deal with her'.

but... That's your evidence, is it?

We found Flo.

She will testify that you ordered her not to call an ambulance for Kendrick Mailer.

Chloe: Which is the cause of his death.

Scarlet Osgood and most of your guests will testify to the same effect.

(whooshing) No ambulance.

That would put every single person here at risk.

(whooshing) (sighs) People like that, they'll say anything to save their skins, posh bastards!

Cynthia, you are under arrest.

You do not have to say... Lady Cynical.

My mother always was an excellent judge of character.

(somber music) (birdsong) I got your message.

I wanted to explain.

(sighs) This... It has nothing to do with my mother.

It is to keep you safe.

I know it is not rational.

It's to dissipate tension?

(sighs) I had never considered the possibility that my mother would die.

Her death...means everyone is in danger.

-So, it is about your mother.

-No, no.

The... The intensity of...these obsessive compulsive behaviors, they are entirely commensurate with the strength of my feelings for you.

Oh... Well... Might there be other ways to express those feelings?

(sighs) Although that would greatly increase the danger, I could, I...I suppose... I mean, I could perhaps... kiss you.

You could.

(passionate music) Help!

Help!

Help!

(thudding) Uh!

(glass cracks) (shattering) (sighs) Jasper?

It has to be now.

(romantic music)
