If you hear any noise It's just me and the boys Hit me, you gotta hit the band Growing up it was pretty loud. It was loud because my dad being a musician, percussion player he would practice around the house every single day. And on the weekends it was straight partying and sometimes rehearsal with his bands. What are the new inspirations that can knock it out He would bring them to the house. They would just come and play. So like Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Carlos Santana later on in the years would just come to the house and just jam. I was five years old and I was raped by a babysitter. That was pretty devastating, as being five years old, like going from playing with my dad, going to kindergarten, and then, babysitter, he raped me. He was in his teens. I felt like my childhood was taken away. I just didn't understand. I was told to do this and do this. It took me a long time to talk about it. My friend Lynn who's singing with us tonight, we became friends and at one point she said to me, "You need to talk about it, you know, because it "would help you as part of your healing." It was so difficult and I probably cried for like three days. You can't live your fullest life stuck in shame and fear, filth, feeling like, you know, it's your fault. And that's when I said, "I don't want to be like this anymore. "I don't want to be angry." We want to plant this seed in your life with this four letter word, and that word is LOVE. When I played with my dad at 15, that one show that I played with him, that changed everything that I could do. I saw myself playing, like I felt like I left my body and I was looking down, watching myself play. I went in the zone in a place that I felt that it's the closest that I could get to God on earth. I know that that's purpose. That's my purpose, that's my gift, and I know that if that goes away then I'm done, and I hope it never does. (cheering and applause)
MALE VOICE
Our National Anthem. (Scratchy rendition of "Star Spangled Banner" plays) (Music changes to contemporary beat) Sheila E.! Sheila E.! Sheila E.! Sheila E.! Sheila E.! Sheila E.! Sheila E.! Sheila E.! O say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming And the rocket's red glare The bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free And the home of the brave
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR
I have a dream. My four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today! Let freedom Ring! And when it happens, we'll be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last, Free at last, "Great God a-mighty, We are free at last."
BARACK OBAMA
The true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth but from the enduring power of our ideals-democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.
HARRY TRUMAN
There's more to be lifted up, more cities to be built, and there's a world to be helped.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR
All we say to America is, "Be true to what you said on paper." But somewhere I read of a freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Now, somewhere I read that the greatness of America, is the right to protest for right. Got to be free So just as I say we aren't going to let any dogs or water hoses turn us around, we aren't gonna let any injunction turn us around.
BARACK OBAMA
We reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope; and where we are met with cynicism and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people- "Yes we can!" Thank you! God bless you! And may God bless the United States of America.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR
I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. (applause) So I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. SHEILA
Karen Carpenter was such an influence in my life as a musician, a drummer, an entertainer as well cause she did it all-singing, everything. Growing up, you never really saw women on, on television playing percussion. And one day we had the television on and this girl was playing drums. I loved that she could play drums but she also sang. So listen very carefully... They would arrange their songs, she wrote music-it's like everything that I wanted to be or want, you know, wanted to be back then, and I'm like, wow, I want to be like her. She's pretty cool. I met Prince at an Al Jarreau concert. I saw him and I went, "Oh my God, who is that? "That's him." I couldn't even breathe. And we both looked at each other and he just stared at me and I stared at him and I'm like, "I have to go say hi to him." The second time we met was at his concert. So I wanted to go see him, and I see this guy with long straight hair just flipping his hair like crazy, has on a g-string with long leg warmers and boots, and I'm like, that can't be the same guy I saw at the Al Jarreau concert. Like really! Ain't it funky! I waited until he went backstage. So I pulled the curtain over, so I just kinda peeked through cause I didn't want to walk in. I peeked through, and he was in the mirror, combing his hair. He saw me in the mirror and he looked like this and he turned around really quickly, and I said, "Hi, I just wanted to meet you. My name is..." and I couldn't even get my name out, and he says, "I already know who you are. "I've been following your career. "I love you. "And me and the bass player, we're, we don't "know who's gonna marry you first." Like all in the same breath! Like bam bam bam bam. Go set somebody free Him watching me and my family play was mind boggling to him. He's like, "I don't even know how you guys are doing what you're doing." Latin jazz music he had never heard before. I valued our friendship more so than being with him and I didn't want to mess that up. And I tried to say no as long as I could, and we couldn't do it, so it was inevitable to be together. Must come out into the light It was always about music. It's, it's a lifestyle. What we wanted to do is continue to create. If that gift that we've been given is to create then you kind of just don't want to stop. I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with the Belle of St. Mark Come on, clap your hands! It tears me apart whenever I hear him cry, yeah Come on! I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with the Belle of St. Mark And if he doesn't love me I think I'll probably die Ow! The Belle of St. Mark was a frail but passionate creature Ebony hair and eyes deep blue-green The belle of St. Mark wore clothes that belonged to his father, mother Even though he was only a mere seventeen Come on! I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with the Belle of St. Mark Come on, clap your hands. It tears me apart whenever I hear him cry Do the jerk, come on. I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with the Belle of St. Mark If he doesn't love me I think I'll probably die The Belle of St. Mark he don't talk to strangers He's so mysterious His erotic persuasion provokes me like no other man The fire I have for him is undoubtedly serious yeah yeah (Oh-oh-oh!) (Oh!) Oh-oh-oh, yea! I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with the Belle of St. Mark Come on! Woo! It tears me apart whenever I hear him cry I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with the Belle of St. Mark And if he doesn't love me I think I'll probably die Ow! Ow! Owwwww! Come Onnnnnnnnn! (cheering and applause) The moon up above It shines on upon our skin Whispering words that scream of outrageous sin We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams It gets kinda rough in the back of our limousine Y'all ready to sing?
