Joseph
I could surrender But I'd just be pretending No I'd rather be dead then live a lie Burn the white flag - Hi, I'm Allie.
- I'm Meegan.
- I'm Natalie.
ALL: And we're Joseph.
- That's right.
- Collectively.
NATALIE: We grew up going camping in a town called Joseph, and we had a different band name at the time and our producer had said, "I think these songs "don't fit with this band name that you have.
"We need something that suits the gravity "of what you're communicating."
And, we'd just been in Joseph, and Allie very timidly was like, "What about Joseph?"
And we all just kind of felt this like (swooshing), that is it.
- Most people have been like, "That's cool," but-- MEEGAN: And we're like one of the top two searches on Google, I think.
- I know, woo!
- When you type in Joseph, so that makes it-- - Come on.
- A lot easier.
- Mom and Dad love it.
- They're our biggest fans.
They were basically just like, "Go.
"Keep your stuff here, don't pay rent, like "whatever you can do, we wanna give you that chance "'cause so many people don't have that."
So they have been the engine of this thing, as well.
Back in the day, our dad was in a jazz vocal group, and all those people from college would come over and they would sing these songs, and it was acapella, and the intricate harmonies and everything, I just remember being totally in awe watching them.
And he would always play music on our, this huge sound system in the living room.
He'd be like, "Come in here, "come in here and listen to this."
And just like, "Did you hear that, "did you hear that moment?"
And that was really fun.
And then of course, our mom being a theater teacher meant that there was a lotta musicals being played.
And I'll be first to say Those green eyes are my green light Givin' up on control NATALIE: They can read each others' minds, so naturally there's a bit of a club going on that I'm not a part of.
- We try really hard to make that not happen, but I do think it's like sometimes, just 'cause Natalie's four years older than us.
So, sometimes that does happen unintentionally, but-- (all laughing) - Never trying to be mean.
- No, you guys are great.
- I think just also, just having a group of three, that kind of always is a thing that can happen too.
- Of course.
- Yeah.
- And vice verse, sometimes it's us verse you.
- (chuckles) Watch out.
- That's right.
That's right.
You thought you'd know the way But now you don't Oh, oh, oh, oh - I've definitely personally felt, entering my 30s, this conflict within myself of how I truly am the adult now, you know, in all of these specific places in my life, it is up to me.
I always have felt still like the little kid.
In "Good Luck, Kid," it's like, "No, the keys are yours."
Good luck, kid Oh, oh, oh - And so the album really is this journey of getting into the driver's seat of your life, and I hope our audience feels what I feel from the song, which is someone from beyond saying, "Yeah, I'm not telling you it'll be okay.
"I'm not gonna tell you it'll be easy, "but you can do it, and the keys are yours, good luck, kid."
(audience applauding) We've arrived on a new planet A new brand of sanity Everybody looks at you Everybody plays it cool Measuring tapes for eyes Suddenly aware of shape and size And you think How am I gonna do this?
Oh, you thought you'd know the way but now you don't Oh, you thought you'd have the answers when you'd grown They handed you the keys The driver's seat is yours now - Oh yeah.
There's nothing left to lean on You're the Queen from here on out No time for doubt Good luck, kid Oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh Oh, hey, hey, hey You're used to looking around to see How everybody else is doing it Now it seems like we're all losing it You read the paper, it's all bad news in it The train's off the tracks, boat's capsized Don't know the left from right And you think How am I gonna do this?
Oh, you thought you'd know the way but now you don't Oh, oh, oh, oh You thought you'd have the answers when you'd grown They handed you the keys The driver's seat is yours now - Okay.
There's nothing left to lean on You're the Queen from here on out No time for doubt Good luck, kid Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, ooh Oh, oh, oh, oh, ooh Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, you thought you'd know the way but now you don't Oh, oh, oh, oh You thought you'd have the answers when you'd grown They handed you the keys The driver's seat is yours now There's nothing left to lean on You're the Queen from here on out No time for doubt Good luck, kid (audience cheering) (gentle guitar music) You don't see me, my eyes are closed and I swear You can't see me, I want you close But my arms are holding you back I'll wait for you with both my eyes shut You don't see me but come here close Tear my hands down, pull off the blinds Look me in the eyes I know there's something, ooh I know there's something real Lately I'm haunted, ooh These shadows hold me here Screaming under water, SOS Can you hear me calling, SOS Did it to myself, now I need your help Alone and overboard yelling, SOS My hands are shaking, nobody's been here before Oh will you see me?
Is it enough?
Will you wake up, pull back the blinds Look me in the eyes I know there's something, ooh I know there's something real Lately I'm haunted, ooh These shadows hold me here Oh, screaming under water, SOS Can you hear me calling, SOS Did it to myself, now I need your help Alone and overboard yelling, SOS I know I want you but I'm drowning in fear I know I want you but I'm drowning in fear I know I want you but I'm drowning in fear I'm finally ready, help me up outta here Screaming under water, SOS Can you hear me calling, SOS Did it to myself, now I need your help Alone and overboard yelling, SOS Screaming under water, SOS Can you hear me calling, SOS Did it to myself, now I need your help I'm calling SOS (audience cheering) NATALIE: This is called Canyon.
(audience cheering) Give me your body Give me your mind I wanna cross your borders I wanna take my time I know the feeling When you're standing beside And when I face you My doors open wide Can't get, I can't get Can't get close enough to be close to you Can't get, I can't get there An inch is a canyon I'll pay you my attention If you invite me inside Show me your country I'll be still and quiet Take me to your darkest corners Show me what you're trying to hide I've got a little fear But it's the reverent kind Can't get, I can't get Can't get close enough to be close to you Can't get, I can't get there An inch is a canyon I can't get there, get there without you I can't get there, get there without you I've got a shovel babe and you're a coal mine I wanna get there I can't get there, get there without you I can't get there, get there without you I'm a diver love and you're the ocean I wanna get there Give me your hands Give me your hands Put mine on you Wanna feel, wanna feel me get to you Give me your hands, put mine on you I wanna feel it, I wanna feel it, I wanna feel it (audience cheering) NATALIE: Two, three, four.
Can't get, I can't get Can't get close enough to be close to you Can't get, I can't get there An inch is - Oh no!
Can't get, I can't get Can't get close enough to be close to you Can't get, I can't get there An inch is a canyon (audience cheering) - Thank you.
Thank you so much.
That was a song that happened in a moment when I was staring at the person that I like a lot, and I'm married to him.
And I was realizing how endless it all is, and how I could spend forever trying to understand another person, and it's infinite, and so it's a canyon, but it's a nice one.
ALLIE: I'm just gonna do that since it's-- - Thank you, Meegan, or Allie.
- Oh god, that was, that's Allie.
- I'm Allie.
- She didn't call me Meegan.
- To her, yeah, she didn't look.
- We're twins, Meegan and I are twins if you didn't know that.
- Yeah, we haven't even introduced ourselves, actually.
I'm Meegan.
- I'm Allie.
- I'm Natalie.
- We're Joseph.
(audience cheering) NATALIE: Our album follows a storyline of hoping for something, getting let down by it, and then walking away in freedom from what you expected it to be into something that you never knew it could be.
And this song is that moment of being let down by it.
(gentle guitar music) If I would have known what I know now Would I do it again?
Revive some openness from my broken wish Still it's bound to backfire I'll admit what I don't want to I forgave you for your mistakes Somehow I'm the one who paid Don't you know it's such a let down I made it easy for you She kept coming around In a revolving door Someone let me out now And make this go away You say that you changed And that you can fix it But can I trust you again?
Put aside the fear that I'm Not the only one Has too much damage been done?
I'll admit what I don't want to I forgave you for your mistakes Somehow I'm the one who paid Don't you know it's such a let down I made it easy for you She kept coming around In a revolving door Someone let me out now And make this go away Oh, mmmm I don't know who's right anymore Ooh, ooh I don't know who's right anymore Ooh, ooh, oh Don't you know it's such a let down I made it easy for you She kept coming around In a revolving door Someone let me out now And make this go away Would I do it again (audience cheering) (light guitar music) It feels like a game When things go like today Wondering which side I'll take Seems like there's no one driving I guess the point was missed I thought that I was fixed But something broke again This time I think it shattered I've got half a mind to lose I'm losing, I'm losing I've got half a mind to soothe Been choosing, accusing Lights dim in this dark room Quick breaths, it'll end soon Just how many half truths Do I have to Tell myself to get through There's so much I wish A memory I miss A version of myself Not lost inside this cavern I've got half a mind to lose I'm losing, I'm losing I've got half a mind to soothe Been choosing, accusing Lights dim in this dark room Quick breaths, it'll end soon Just how many half truths Do I have to Tell myself to get through I'm in danger and I'm safe Running fast, standing in place I'm both things at the same time And I don't think it's lying To say half truths, half truths So I have to tell myself to get through Lights dim in this dark room Quick breaths, it'll end soon Just how many half truths Do I have to Tell myself to get through Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (audience cheering) NATALIE: Allie Closner.
(audience applauding) First cup of coffee after a long night First kiss after a bitter fight First time we see each other after too much time Something's gone but we're still here and it's alright If this is a drug keep me prescribed These are the side effects I want for life You make me feel like heaven needs to take its time I don't wanna move I don't wanna move You make me feel like heaven needs to take its time I don't wanna move I don't wanna move I don't wanna move First note you played on the midnight piano Our voices raised, holding the stars in place The first mile on the first road where we let go First time we let our hearts race If this is a drug keep me prescribed These are the side effects I want for life You make me feel like heaven needs to take its time I don't wanna move I don't wanna move You make me feel like heaven needs to take its time I don't wanna move I don't wanna move I know this moment is following the last one out Can't seem to hold it down But I hope it stays around I don't wanna move You make me feel like heaven needs to take its time I don't wanna move I don't wanna move You make me feel like heaven needs to take its time I don't wanna move I don't wanna move I don't wanna move I don't wanna move (audience cheering) - I'd like to thank my guitar tech, Meeg, who is not getting paid extra.
(laughs) (audience laughing) Could've been the way The moonlight hit the dashboard Passenger window rolled down That got me thinking There's something we should talk about It's not worth waiting out I can give you space if you need it You can walk away, I'm not leaving There's pride in my mouth I got used to the taste Well I'll swallow it now And I'll be first to say Those green eyes are my green light Giving up on control You see red lights I see me blowing straight through to you If we're headed for the cliffside I'm ready for the fall If you know me at all You know I don't need lights to decide I'm not changing my mind (audience cheering) We could both play the pretender Circling round this parking lot While one of us still remembers We're lucky to have what we've got We're taking a room for breathing You can walk away, I'm not leaving There's pride in your mouth You got used to the taste Can you swallow it now When you hear me say Those green eyes are my green light Giving up on control You see red lights I see me blowing straight through to you If we're headed for the cliffside I'm ready for the fall If you know me at all You know I don't need lights to decide I'm not changing my mind Thought I could read you But I lost my place Now we're on different pages I need you Thought I could read you But I lost my place Now we're on different pages I need you Thought I could read you But I lost my place Now we're on different pages I need you Thought I could read you But I lost my place Now we're on different pages Those green eyes are my green light I'm giving up on control You see red lights I see me blowing straight through to you If we're headed for the cliffside I'm ready for the fall If you know me at all You know I don't need lights to decide I'm not changing my mind (audience cheering) - Thank you.
- It wasn't until two years into doing music by myself that I realized something was missing.
And that's when the thunderbolt struck.
I had this idea, and I (sputtering), it's been insane ever since.
MEEGAN: I don't think either of us ever really had the intention.
We thought it was just singing backup for her.
There's no way we could've, you know, imagined we'd be here today.
ALLIE: When we first started playing music, we were mostly singing a lot of the songs that Natalie had written before we were there, and so we were kind of more singing backup.
But there was this moment where Natalie was like, "Let's try and write a song together."
And I think that was the moment when it was like we all kind of jumped in starting to kinda help and create.
But it was like, "Whoa, this is like, "something powerful and different."
- You grow up with the same like speech, the way you say words and stuff like that, I think helps a lot.
And the way we sing, and it helps with our blend, especially Allie and mine.
My tone is higher and hers is lower, and we practically have the same voice.
I'm losing, I'm losing.
NATALIE: I always was blown away when we started singing together how they would just know when the entrance and the exit of the phrase would happen.
And they would just do it with me, like it was a machine, and it's just really fun and exciting to do.
- It's grown us closer, we're four years apart, so it's more of like a mentor to, like, younger sisters kind of thing.
So it really forced us to become equals, really.
And that came with Natalie opening up the space to us to become her equal, and also us really rising to the challenge and becoming, like, more adult.
- I'm crying, are you crying?
- No, I was just staring too long.
(all laughing) - Your eyes just get watery.
- Gosh dang it.
ALLIE: I hope that when people are listening to Joseph that it's like this experience where they can reflect on their past and their future and their present and have honest conversations with themself, you know, like our song "Honest."
I'm alone "I'm alone, no you're not," all these different phrases in our songs that I hope can be, like, a reflection for people and a way for them to kind of face themselves or maybe some feelings that they've had that they haven't been able to put words to.
- The kinds of notes that you get from people are-- MEEGAN: So good.
- (sputtering) Just earth-shatteringly special because it's like people opening up and sharing their stories of how that song played a role in their life.
And there's no greater honor than to have made something that is a companion for someone else.
So, this one, I think some of you have probably heard, it's on our new album, and it came from a moment when I was driving home to my best friend's house, and she had a brand new baby.
And I was just thinking what a crazy thing it is to go up to a house and know that this human being is entering something, the world, and a family that I have cared about their story for so long, and he knows nothing.
And, it's like, I had this moment of being like, "Did he even mean to come here?"
You know, like, "What, is this against his will?"
(audience laughing) (laughing) Wasn't like anyone looked at 2019 and was like, "That looks easy and fun, life's a breeze."
We wrote this song with a friend of ours who's a father, and we were talking about this thing about how you're holding this brand new being in your arms and you just have this intense feeling of like, "I never want you to hurt, ever."
It just occurred to me when we were writing it, like, someone must've held me and thought the same thing about me.
And how, if I would think of myself that way and sing and hope the best for myself, and hope the best for all of us, you know, 'cause we're hard on ourselves and we're hard on each other.
But this song is just going easy on us and wishing the best for us all.
So, it's for you, it's called, "Room For You," here we go.
(gentle guitar music) I hope to God the world will make some room for you I hope you're seeing colors that the world sees through You know I'll be right here holding this dream for you I hope to God the world will make some room for you Even if we lose touch, we fall off the tracks You gotta know that you're still loved Even if you can't love back Oh this lonely aching feeling Should never belong to you Never belong to you Oh this lonely aching feeling Should never belong to you Ever belong to you I hope you never get so broke you don't know what to do I hope you find someone who always sees The better side of you You know that I'm right here holding these dreams for you The curtain might be closing but this show ain't through Oh this lonely aching feeling Should never belong to you Never belong to you Oh this lonely aching feeling Should never belong to you Never belong to you I hope the only hurt you feel comes from the truth I hope to God the world will make some room for you (audience cheering) - This one we didn't write, but it means a lot to us.
It's by the Rolling Stones, ready?
(light guitar music) Cool, one, two, three, four.
Ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh When the wind blows and the rain feels cold With a head full of snow With a head full of snow In the window there's a face you know Don't the night pass slow Don't the night pass slow The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind Just another mad day on the road And I'm just living to be lying by your side But it's just about a moonlight mile On down the road Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Made a rag pile of my shiny clothes Gonna warm my bones Gonna warm my bones I got silence on my radio Let the air waves flow Let the air waves flow And oh I'm sleeping under strange strange skies Just another mad day on the road Oh yeah, yeah, yeah My dreams are fading down the railway line But it's just about a moonlight mile - Two, three.
On down the road Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh - Okay now.
I'm hiding sister and I'm dreaming I'm riding down your moonlight mile I'm hiding baby and I'm dreaming I'm riding down your moonlight mile Let it go now Let it go, come on up babe Let it go, let it go now Let it go, come on up babe Let it go now Let it go, come on up babe Let it go, yeah, yeah, yeah Let it go now Let it go, let it go now Let it go, come on up babe Let it go, let it go now Let it go, come on up babe Let it go, ooh Oh yeah, I'm coming home But it's just about a moonlight mile On down the road Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh - That's the Rolling Stones.
