Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks
Mississippi Heartbeat (Opening Title) >> Joe Bonamassa: We went down to the Mississippi Delta to see the land where Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf came from.
To see what was in the dirt and what was in the water that made these men cornerstones of blues music.
When they built the levies to hold back the huge Mississippi River floods that happened every year, the floods plains and marshes dried up and the silt from the river left behind a wonderfully fertilized land... perfect for cotton.
On these cotton plantations all these great blues players were born or were raised as hardworking sharecroppers who picked cotton during the day and at night they played this music that became the blues.
It's just amazing that the delta was a breeding ground for this new genesis of music.
Robert Johnson, Son House, Charlie Patton, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf all came from the same area.
It's just something that's gotta be in the soil and the water.
And we had to go and see where this seed was planted that was the birth of this blues music, and the music that became the foundation of all rock and roll music that followed.
>> Muddy Waters: I was born in a little town called Rolling Fork and I was raised up in Clarksdale.
I was raised up out on a farm, on a plantation.
So I lived a country life for a long time.
Little rough but I came through it.
I was with them... my grandmother raised me.
Everybody had to work and I did.
Out on that... little kids, ten years old out there working, ya know, on the farm.
I got, I began in Mississippi.
I first started with one harmonica.
I think a started about nine years old, when I was thirteen I was doing pretty good with it.
When I became about seventeen or eighteen I switched over to guitar.
Then finally in 1943 I brought it to Chicago.
>> Announcer: The program begins with Muddy Waters.
