(bird calls in distance) SON: You used to disappear on these lands.
And hunt in these woods.
And now so do I. In my own way.
(shutter clicks) (gasps) (blowing) FATHER: I'm going to some place.
I couldn't tell you where.
Some days I don't want to.
Some days, I want to turn around.
BOTH: But you're still here.
Haunting me.
(exhales) (birds chirping in distance) (inhales sharply, yelps) FATHER: You'll feel things that I can't feel.
- (sighs) SON: And I can't see what you see.
BOTH: Maybe... FATHER: ...you don't need to see it all to keep going.
SON: ...you don't need to see it all to keep going.
(shutter clicks) (fire crackling) (animal calls in distance) (animal calls in distance) (breeze blowing) SON: The fire keeps me warm.
It gives me hope.
(thunder rumbling) FATHER: The fire shows me where to go.
(thunder claps) I couldn't do this... SON: I... FATHER: ...without you.
SON: ...couldn't do this without you.
(rain falling, son blowing strongly) (thunder crashing) (exhales) Come on.
Come on, come on, come on.
(inhaling deeply, blowing) Yes!
Yes!
(laughing) (thunder rumbling) Yes.
(laughing) (thunder claps) (breathes deeply) (crying) (breath trembling) (crying) (breath trembling) (thunder rumbling) (inhales sharply) (thunder rumbling) SON: Without you here to guide me, that will be the hardest part.
FATHER: Seeing you grow up and go on your own journey, that will be the hardest part.
BOTH: The part where you head into the unknown.
FATHER: Just like me.
SON: Just like me.
(bird calling in distance) (insects chirping) (son groaning) (groans) (sighs) Oh, no.
(running, breathlessly): Oh, no.
No, no, no, no.
(sniffs) (panting, footsteps pounding) Oh, no.
(panting, sniffs) (panting) (insects chirping) (fire crackling softly) No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, come on.
(exclaims) (inhaling deeply, blowing) No.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, come on, come on.
Man, (muted).
(muted), man, (muted).
(muted) (breath trembling) (muted) damn it!
God!
(exhales heavily) (inhales deeply) (breath trembling) BOTH: Maybe there's something beyond the sadness.
(son inhales) (blowing) (shutter clicks) SON: Beyond the fear.
FATHER: Beyond the fear.
SON: Maybe you brought me here.
FATHER: Maybe you brought me here.
BOTH: Maybe you've always been waiting.
FATHER: For me.
SON: For me.
(fire crackling softly) (bird calling in distance) SON: Because you'll remember you've been gone for a long time.
- (sighs) (rifling through pockets) FATHER: It's time for me to go.
SON: And finally, you'll depart.
(lens cap closes) BOTH: And into the unknown, we'll both go, together.
Until our spirits meet again.
(birds chirping) (camera closes) (sizzling) SON: You used to disappear on these lands.
And now so do I. In my own way.
(engine starts) (engine idling) (footsteps approaching) (groans, mumbles) SHELLY: Morning, you little (muted).
Shelly?
- Stole my rig.
Now we're even.
So, help me understand.
Understand what?
What's going on with you?
She got bad again.
Ah, your mom.
I don't know, just left.
Um... A, um... Auntie?
Do you think I could stay with you?
(dog barking in distance) I spoke with your mom.
Really?
What did she say?
She said it's all good and you can stay.
- (exhales softly) Thank you, Auntie.
- Mm.
You making friends with Sixamesi?
- Yeah-- why is she in here by herself?
- When she was a calf, it was, uh, she got roughed up pretty bad.
She almost died.
She didn't quite fit in with the herd, and she causes trouble.
She breaks fences.
Sometimes she hurts herself.
Kind of like your mom, actually.
So, we, we keep her in here to feel, um, feel safe.
What's her name again?
- Sixamesi.
Kind of means a (muted)head.
(chuckles) - (laughs) Ah, enough of that.
What do you want to do to earn your keep around here, for work?
Do you want to work in the barn?
Do you want to work on fences?
- Can I work with the buffalo?
- (chuckles) Of course, of course, you can work with the buffalo.
What's this?
You said you wanted to look after the buffalo.
We got 62 buffalo we got to keep track of.
Once you have marked where they're all at, mark them down in that notebook, then you can come back to the house.
Well, where are you going?
Got a lot of (muted) to do.
Oh, so you're just going to leave me out here?
- It's a couple thousand acres.
- Thousands?
Shelly, you're joking, right?
(engine starts) (yells): Shelly!
You're joking, right?
- Don't forget, 62!
- (yells): Shelly!
Shelly!
(engine fades) (in normal voice): She'll come back.
(crickets chirping) (murmurs) (sniffs) What?
- Nothing.
You just look like your mom.
Oh.
- You know, your mom wasn't always like this.
When we were kids, yeah, she was so much fun.
She was full of life.
It's, it's that boarding school.
Messed her up.
Messed me up, too.
(Pearl Jam's "Alright" playing) You can't hide the lies In the rings of a tree If your heart still beats free Keep it for yourself Like the flight of the bee Keep it for yourself It's alright to say no Be a disappointment in your own home It's alright to be alone To listen for a heartbeat, it's your own (song ends) (snorts softly) (sighs) (snorting softly) I'm really glad you're here.
Thank you.
Me, too.
(Shelly cooing, dog barking in distance) (Sixamesi snorts softly, Shelly coos) Mm... - Auntie.
I was wondering if I could feed her?
Sixamesi?
(feed rattling) (softly): Come on.
- Hey!
