By 1930, Diane's family was in Belgium, where they enjoyed a scant few years of peace before the Nazis invaded. And these weren't the only times they'd seen their lives turned upside down. Record suggests that the Nahmias family originated in Spain, and had been expelled, along with much of Spain's Jewish population, by the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, after an edict that they issued in 1492. So we've been kicked out of everywhere. You've been kicked out of everywhere, but, baby, you have survived and you have thrived. We've been kicked out of everywhere. You come from a long line of tough people. Yeah. You're the inheritor of all these experiences.
