[applause] Ooh, aah A thing called love Six foot six he stood on the ground He weighed 235 pounds But I saw that giant of a man Brought down to his knees by love He was the kind of man that would gamble on love Look you in the eye and never give up But I saw him cry like a little whipped pup Because of love You can't see it with your eyes Hold it in your hands But like the wind it covers our land Strong enough to rule the heart of any man This thing called love It can lift you up, never let you down Take your world and turn it all around Ever since time nothing's ever been found That's stronger than love Ooh, ahh A thing called love Most men are like me, they struggle and doubt They trouble their minds day in and day out Too busy with living to worry about A little word like love But when I see a mother's tenderness As she holds her young close to her breast Then I thank God that the world's been blessed With a thing called love We can't see it with your eyes Hold it in your hand But like the wind it covers our land Strong enough to rule the heart of any man This thing called love It can lift you up, never let you down Take your world and turn it all around Ever since time nothing's ever been found That's stronger than love Ever since time nothing's ever been found That's stronger than love Ooh, ahh A thing called love [applause and cheering] Hello there, I'm Daniel O'Donnell, and it's been quite a while since we had our last big concert special here on PBS, and I'm absolutely delighted to be back with you again.
To celebrate our return with the music we love, I've invited along some special guests to join me on some of my favorite songs.
I hope you'll sing along with us.
When the day is dawning On a Texas Sunday morning How I long to be there With Marie who's waiting for me there Every lonely city Where I hang my hat Ain't as half as pretty As where my baby's at Is this the way to Amarillo?
Every night I've been hugging my pillow Dreaming dreams of Amarillo And sweet Marie who waits for me Show me the way to Amarillo I've been weeping like a willow Crying over Amarillo And sweet Marie who waits for me DANIEL: Everybody!
Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la And Marie who waits for me There's a church bell ringing Hear the sound of love that it's singing For sweet Maria I'm the guy who's coming to see her Just beyond the highway Ba ba da ba ba There's an open plain Ba ba da ba ba And it keeps us going Through the wind and rain Is this the way to Amarillo?
Every night I've been hugging my pillow Dreaming dreams of Amarillo And sweet Marie who waits for me Show me the way to Amarillo I've been weeping like a willow Crying over Amarillo And sweet Marie who waits for me Alright!
Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la And Marie who waits for me Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la And Marie who waits for me DANIEL: Alright!
Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la Sha la la la la la la la Oh!
Woo!
And Marie who waits for me [cheering and applause] Now, if you've been to one of our live shows, you know that this next song is a signature tune of mine, and maybe you've danced along in the aisles or sang along with me in the seats, but this is a special Irish version of "Stand Beside Me."
B ar lmh liom B ar lmh liom Gan tusa ag mo thaobh Bhinn caillte agus faoi bhrn B ar lmh liom, b ar lmh liom Is t ts agus deireadh mo shaol Nor mhaith liom bheith fghta liom fin Liom fhin ars, mar a bh m fad Sular shil t isteach agus gheall t go beacht Nach mbeadh mise faghta liom fhin ars go deo B ar lmh liom, b ar lmh liom Gan tusa ag mo thaobh Bhinn caillte agus faoi bhrn B ar lmh liom, b ar lmh liom Is t ts 's deireadh mo shaol Alright!
Oh, play it, boys!
O am go h-am, tann ruda bun os cionn nach cuma a stirn, m t tusa in aice liom Fhad is t t do sheasamh ag mo thaobh An bheirt againn le chile inn amrach 's go deo B ar lmh liom, b ar lmh liom Gan tusa ag mo thaobh Bhinn caillte agus faoi bhrn B ar lmh liom, b ar lmh liom Is t ts is deireadh mo shaol Is t ts 's deireadh mo shaol [cheering and applause] [cymbal crash] [cheering and applause] Now, this next performance is very, very special to me.
I was incredibly lucky to be joined by the late great Charley Pride.
And Charley and I were blessed with a lovely friendship over the years, and I've admired him since I was just a young boy growing up here in Donegal.
And I was very lucky to get to know him, and they say you should never meet your heroes, but in this case he was everything that I thought he would be.
Well, it wouldn't be right to perform with Charley Pride without doing one of his biggest hits ever, "The Crystal Chandeliers."
Oh, the crystal chandeliers light up the paintings on your wall The marble statuettes are standing stately in the hall But will the timely crowd that has you laughing loud help you dry your tears When the new wears off of your crystal chandeliers?
I never did fit in too well with the folks you knew And it's plain to see that the likes of me don't fit with you So you traded me for the gaiety of the well-to-do And you turned away from the love I offered you Oh, the crystal chandeliers light up the paintings on your wall The marble statuettes are standing stately in the hall But will the timely crowd that has you laughing loud help you dry your tears When the new wears off of your crystal chandeliers?
I see your picture in the news most every day You're the chosen girl of the social world So the stories say But a paper smile only lasts a while Then it fades away And the love we knew will come home to you someday DANIEL: Everybody!
Oh, the crystal chandeliers light up the paintings on your wall The marble statuettes are standing stately in the hall But will the timely crowd that has you laughing loud help you dry your tears When the new wears off of your crystal chandeliers?
When the new wears off of your crystal chandeliers CHARLEY: Thank you!
[cheering and applause] Now, my next guest, Lisa McHugh, is one of our greatest stars here in Ireland, one of the new stars, should I say, and she's bringing a whole new energy to the music business with some great new material.
But this next song is one of the classics we decided to sing together, "The Wind Beneath My Wings."
It must have been cold there in my shadow To never have sunlight on your face You were content to let me shine You always walked a step behind I was the one with all the glory While you were the one with all the strength Only a face without a name I never once heard you complain Did you ever know that you're my hero?
Everything I would like to be I can fly higher than an eagle 'Cause you are the wind beneath my wings It might have appeared to go unnoticed But I've got it all here in my heart I want you to know I know the truth Of course I know I would be nothing without you Did you ever know that you're my hero?
Everything I would like to be I can fly higher than an eagle You are the wind beneath my wings You are the wind Beneath my wings [applause and cheering] LISA: Mr. Daniel O'Donnell, ladies and gentlemen.
DANIEL: Lisa McHugh.
[cheering and applause] Now in this next song you'll recognize my longtime singing partner Mary Duff.
Sadly Mary has decided to retire from touring with our show, but she joins me on this one along with Louise Morrissey, Paddy O'Brien, and Frank McCaffrey.
Say hey, good lookin' What you got cookin'?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?
Hey, sweet baby, don't you think maybe We could find us a brand new recipe?
I got a hot rod Ford and a two-dollar bill I know a spot right over the hill There's soda pop and the dancing's free If you wanna have fun, come along with me Say hey, good lookin' What you got cookin'?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?
DANIEL: Oh, play it, boys!
I'm free and ready, so we can go steady How's about savin' all your time for me?
No more lookin', I know I've been tooken How's about keepin' steady company?
I'm gonna throw my datebook over the fence And find me one for five or ten cents Keep it till it's covered with age I'm writin' your name down on every page Say hey, good lookin' What you got cookin'?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?
How's about cookin' somethin' up?
How's about cookin' somethin' up?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?
[cheering and applause] Whether you've attended one of our live shows or just enjoy here in the comfort of your own home on PBS, I think you'll recognize this next song, and I hope you'll sing and dance with us again.
I don't want to be the one who hesitates Be too shy, wait too late I don't care what they say other lovers do I just wanna dance with you Well, I've got a feeling that you got a heart like mine So let it show, let it shine If we get a chance to make one heart of two I just wanna dance with you I wanna dance with you Twirl you all around the floor That's what they invented dancin' for I just wanna dance with you I wanna dance with you Hold you in my arms once more That's what they invented dancin' for I just wanna dance with you Oh, play it, boys!
I caught you lookin' at me when I looked at you Yes, I did, you know that's true You don't get embarrassed by the things I do I just wanna dance with you Now the boys are playin' softly and the girls are, too So am I, oh, and so are you If this was the movies, we'd be right on cue I just wanna dance with you I wanna dance with you Twirl you all around the floor That's what they invented dancin' for I just wanna dance with you I wanna dance with you Hold you in my arms once more That's what they invented dancin' for I just wanna dance with you Oh, I just wanna dance with you [audience whooping] [cheering and applause] Now, I have always felt very, very welcomed here on PBS, and I suppose that's the, the family atmosphere that this great station provides to all of us.
And this next song is very special for me, too, and I'm going to sing it in the Irish language.
There's always a fire in the kitchen, or the title is "Our House Is a Home."
T an tine thos i gcona sa chistin Beidh t cinnte go bhfaighidh t cupn tae Nl maoin ann na str t s seascair go leor T ar mbaile ln go doras le gr T filte i gcona roimh an strinsir Bodh s san oche n sa l Mar sin na bodh brn ort na uaigneas Ach tar isteach, 's suigh is lig do scth There's always a fire in the kitchen There's always a kettle on the boil Nl maoin ann na str, t s seascair go leor T ar mbaile ln go doras le gr Nl maoin ann na str, t s seascair go leor T ar mbaile ln go doras le gr [cheering and applause] My next guest is an incredibly talented singer.
She's had a wonderful career in country music, and since I've gotten to know her, she's just as nice as she is talented.
I'm delighted to be joined by Crystal Gayle.
I can't seem to learn not to love you You get to me every time You're someone I just can't say no to And you're so good at changing my mind Here I go down that wrong road again Going back where I've already been Even knowing where it will end Here I go down that wrong road again Though I see the web that you're weaving You and your soft, easy lines Before I stop to think I'm believing And I'm falling for you one more time Here I go down that wrong road again Going back where I've already been Even knowing where it will end Here I go down that wrong road again Here I go down that wrong road again Going back where I've already been Even knowing where it will end Here I go down that wrong road again DANIEL: [speaking Irish] Crystal Gayle!
[cheering and applause] Now, I have returned to PBS many times.
I suppose you could say my shoes keep walking back to you.
This next song, I'm going to sing it in the Irish language.
I'd like to share just a song in our native tongue.
See if you recognize it.
Bhfuil aon slas ndn domh nos m Thiocfaidh liomsa r gur beag an rud d ghr Gur cuma liom, nach bhfeicim th nos m Ach le druidim na hoche briseann s mo chro Go gcaithfaidh m an saol anois liom fhin T m chro 'sa briste brite gan t T mo shile, deorach brnach gan t T m bheola caillte gan d phoign Bhfuil aon slas ndn domh nos m Alright!

For this version, I'm joined by Rita Coolidge, and we sing it in three different languages.
I hope that it will lift your soul just as much as it did ours as we performed it.
U ne la nv i u we tsi I ga go yv he I Hna quo tso sv wi yu lo se I ga gu yv ho nv 'S do ghrsta a chuir mo chro ar crith Is do Grsta a shlnaigh m Nach lchmhair glrmhar Grsta D An uair a ghlactar [applause] E lo ni gv ni li squa di Seo muid lidir, le dchas cro Ni ga di da ye di go I S'n thrigfear sinn go deo Amazing grace How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost, but now I'm found Was blind, but now I see [cheering and applause] [cheering grows louder] Now, this next song really has a wonderful meaning, especially in the times that we're living in, and great ballads are always better in harmony, so for this I've enjoyed the company of Eleanor Shanley, Tommy Fleming, and the Celtic Brothers.
Let us pause in life's pleasures And count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger Forever in our ears Oh, hard times, come again no more Come on, let me hear you sing.
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered Around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty And music light and gay There frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent Their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered Around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more There's a pale, silent maiden Who toils her life away With a worn heart whose better days are o'er Though her voice should be merry To sighing all the day Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered Around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis a sigh that is wafted Across the troubled wave 'Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore 'Tis a dirge that is murmured Around the lowly grave Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered Around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more DANIEL: Everybody, come on!
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered Around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more Oh, hard times, come again No more Woo!
[cheering and applause] Now, the late Glen Campbell was an incredibly talented singer and musician, and he really did share his wonderful talent with the world for decades.
I am delighted to be joined in this next song by his wonderfully talented daughter, Ashley Campbell.
I hope you enjoy.
If you see your brother standing by the road With a heavy load From the seeds he sowed If you see your sister falling by the way Just stop and say "You're going the wrong way" You've got to try a little kindness Show a little kindness Shine your light for everyone to see And if you try a little kindness Then you'll overlook the blindness Of the narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded street Don't walk around the down and out Lend a helping hand Instead of doubt And the kindness that you show every day Will help someone along their way Everybody!
You've got to try a little kindness Show a little kindness Shine your light for everyone to see And if you try a little kindness Then you'll overlook the blindness Of the narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded street You've got to try a little kindness Show a little kindness Shine your light for everyone to see And if you try a little kindness Then you'll overlook the blindness Of the narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded street Of the narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded street [cheering and applause] You know, it's hard to beat the old songs, and somehow they seem to get better with age, none more so than this next one.
Well, I've got heartaches by the number Troubles by the score Every day you love me less Each day I love you more Yes, I've got heartaches by the number A love that I can't win And the day that I stop counting That's the day my world will end Heartache number one was when you left me I never knew that I could hurt this way Heartache number two was when you came back again You came back but never meant to stay Now I've got heartaches by the number Troubles by the score Every day you love me less Each day I love you more Yes, I've got heartaches by the number A love that I can't win And the day that I stop counting That's the day my world will end Take it away, guys!
How about it for all these wonderful singers and musicians up here, ladies and gentlemen.
[applause] Heartache number three was when you called me And said that you were coming back to stay With a hopeful heart I waited for your knock on the door I waited but you must have lost your way Everybody!
Now I've got heartaches by the number Troubles by the score Every day you love me less Each day I love you more Yes, I've got heartaches by the number A love that I can't win And the day that I stop counting That's the day my world will end Yes, the day that I stop counting That's the day my world will end [cheering and applause] Oh, thank you!
Thank you very much.
This next song was made famous by Leroy Van Dyke many years ago, and I've always enjoyed singing it, so I hope you'll join me as we "Walk On By."
If I see you tomorrow on some street in town Pardon me if I don't say hello BACKUP SINGERS: Hello I belong to another It wouldn't look so good To know someone I'm not supposed to know Everybody!
Just walk on by AUDIENCE: Wait on the corner I love you, but we're strangers when we meet Just walk on by AUDIENCE: Wait on the corner I love you, but we're strangers when we meet Oh, take it away there.
In a dimly lit corner At a place outside of town Tonight we'll try to say goodbye again BACKUP SINGERS: Goodbye But I know it's not over I'll call tomorrow night I can't let you go, so why pretend?
Just walk on by AUDIENCE: Wait on the corner I love you, but we're strangers when we meet Just walk on by Wait on the corner I love you, but we're strangers when we meet I love you, but we're strangers when we meet [cheering and applause] Now, I almost never do a show without including this next song, and I'm delighted to be joined by my good friends Cliona Hagan, Patrick Feeney, Michael English, and public television veteran Chlo Agnew.
A one, two, three, four... By the rivers of Babylon There we sat down Yeah, we wept When we remember Zion By the rivers of Babylon There we sat down Yeah, we wept When we remembered Zion So let the wicked Carry us away in captivity Requiring of us a song Now, how shall we sing the Lord's song In a strange land?
So let the wicked Carry us away in captivity Requiring of us a song Now, how shall we sing the Lord's song In a strange land?
DANIEL: Everybody!
Ah, ah, ah, ah Ah, ah, ah, ah Ah, ah, ah, ah Ah, ah, ah, ah Let the words of our mouths And the meditation of our hearts Be acceptable in thy sight Here tonight Let the words of our mouths And the meditation of our hearts Be acceptable in thy sight here tonight Up by the rivers of Babylon Babylon There we sat down We sat down Yeah, we wept Lord, we wept When we remembered Zion Up by the rivers of Babylon Babylon There we sat down We sat down Yeah, we wept Lord, we wept When we remembered Zion Up by the rivers of Babylon Whoo!
[cheering and applause] Now, if you've been to one of our live shows, you will know that I always like to finish the show with "How Great Thou Art."
It really does give me a wonderful feeling at the end of the concert, and I hope it will fill you with the same gratitude, joy and love that it does me.
O Lord my God When I in awesome wonder Consider all The works thy hands have made I see the stars I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout The universe displayed Then sings my soul My savior God to thee How great thou art How great thou art Then sings my soul My savior God to thee How great thou art How great thou art When Christ shall come With shout of acclamation To take me home What joy shall fill my heart Then I shall bow In humble adoration And there proclaim My God, how great thou art Then sings my soul My savior God to thee How great thou art How great thou art Then sings my soul My savior God to thee How great thou art How great thou art How great thou art How great thou art [cheering and applause] It's been ten long and lonely years Since I've been to my hometown [applause] I sought fame and fortune Which I finally found Everyone at home, they know me And they say that I'm a big man The hometown boy that made good But he's back home again But there's a face in my memory That stands out from all the rest A face of someone special The girl that I love best When I asked my mom about Jeanie She said she married yesterday Please don't try to see her, son It had to be this way And my eyes fill with tears As I turn back the years For the love I once had when she was mine Jeanie Norman was her name And I'd give up all my fame To hold Jeanie close one more time And my eyes fill with tears As I turn back the years To a love I once had When she was mine Jeanie Norman was her name And I'd give up all my fame To hold Jeanie close one more time Just to hold Jeanie close One more time [cheering and applause]
