Faith Ringgold on creating Tar Beach story quilt
Looks exactly as it did when I painted it. What I used to do each time I made a quilt, I would first decide the background color so I know in this case, it's blue so this whole piece of canvas would be attached to the wall in my studio and painted blue, very, almost that color except for some shading in there, and then the next thing, so I knew there was a blue, well night blue okay, so then I would go to the, my favorite upholstery store and I would get, incidentally this is cotton duck, finely, finely woven, very good quality cotton duck canvas, not linen because linen is not appropriate for painting on this acrylic without gesso and there's no gesso here. Okay then I would go to the upholstery store and I would pick several different patterns of very well made and colored upholstery fabric so you know I didn't have to worry about fading and stuff like that, to cut these blocks out see, and this, and that, all this is cloth, this is canvas, and then I would add some design aspects to the original, see this is all my painting here, this is my painting here, this is my painting, those little red flowers on there with the stems, those are my painting, this is my painting here on top of these blocks. This is like a checkerboard thing and I put some, put something on there, and here, look see, I added something here to these flowers. I just added stuff to the fabric, to the design and then, my assistant, and then I would make up a drawing and I would number each one of these and put it in the blocks so that she could see, where to repeat any one of the designs and then I would make the quilt design, see how the line goes this way and this way. Actually it's that cuba in it there, and that's the way she would make the quilt lines and then I used on canvas itself, I used a marker, kind of white waxy marker that can be ironed out and I mark it on the canvas so she can see where to make her lines. Now in here is a thin batting, very thin, and I would love to see what the backing is, I don't remember, what's the backing.
