Curator George Ciscle on Joyce J Scott
I think the issues that are most important to Joyce and that are evident in her work is where it is prejudice stem from. Many times of course enjoys his work you can see that in the kind of stereotypical imagery but other times it will be humor and using satire as a vehicle to get her message across. Man Eating Watermelon uses the stereotypical image of the watermelon and Joyce has taken that image of the watermelon and having the African American man escape from it but at the same time he's still dragging it behind him really bound by that image. No Mommy Ee is part of an ongoing series called The Nanny series that Joyce has been doing for thirty years and it's her looking back at the time with her mother Elizabeth Talford Scott worked as a domestic in Baltimore taking care of other people's children on a daily basis and Joyce's search and need for affection when her mom would come home.
