Charles Kernaghan on Portrait of a Textile Worker
I'm the director of an organization called the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights. We're a solidarity organization to help some of the poorest workers in the world so that's our job, that's what we do. We travel go to Bangladesh, China, India, Central America, Mexico, Jordan. Basically now workers around the world have heard of the work we do so we now get requests from all over the world from workers asking for a solidarity, asking for help. Our mission is to try to help some of these poor workers and help them fight back, you know raise this to the American people, raise it to the American government. We must do more and I saw this quilt, it really was very emotional you. What Terese was able to do was take this young worker so that her dignity was there. I think this was a celebration to the dignity of these people and took this, this mural to actually give the dignity back to these workers and I just think it's remarkable and thousands of people had to help with all these labels so it was, it was, I think it's an extraordinary work of art. We have to do something to reach out to people because we're one family and I, what Terese did with this this mural, it's not only a great work of art, it's also a great work of organizing because tens of thousands of people had to put these, these these labels out, had cut them out and send them, I mean this is where art becomes has real meaning. It's not just something that's kind of cool to look at. This is real life and these labels are people all over the world, helping this woman and helping these workers.
