Oh, the nights of the Kerry dancing Oh, the sound of the piper's tune ANNOUNCER: Experience the spirit of Ireland like never before.
Like a bridge over troubled water As you're transported through song to the magic of the Emerald Isle through the ages.
Just every word Oh, Danny boy Oh, Danny boy I love you so (audience applauds) From Detroit's historic Masonic Temple Chapel, A Celtic Awakening with Faith Marion Robinson.
Could be Who knows There's something due any day I will know, right away Soon as it shows It may come cannonballing down Through the sky Gleam in its eye, bright as a rose Who knows It's only just out of reach Down the block, on a beach Under a tree I got a feeling there's a miracle due Gonna come true, comin' to me Could it be, yes it could Something's comin', something good If I can wait Something's comin' Don't know what it is But it is gonna be great With a click, with a shock Phone will jingle, door will knock Open the latch Something's comin' Don't know when But it's soon Catch the Moon One handed catch Around the corner Or whistling down the river Come on, deliver to me Will it be, yes it will Maybe just by holding still It'll be there Come on, something Come on in Don't be shy, meet a guy Pull up a chair The air is humming And something great is coming Who knows It's only just out of reach Down the block, on a beach Maybe tonight Maybe tonight Maybe tonight ("He Moved Through the Fair") My young love said to me My mother won't mind And my father won't slight you For your lack of kind And he stepped away from me And this he did say It will not be long, love 'Til our wedding day He stepped away from me And he went through the fair And fondly I watched him move here and move there And then he went homeward with one star awake As the swan in the evening Moves over the lake Last night he came to me He came softly in So softly he came That his feet made no din And he laid his hand on me And this he did say It will not be long, love 'Til our wedding day (audience applauds) FAITH: Hi, I'm Faith Marion Robinson and thank you so much for coming tonight.
I am so delighted to be here in the Masonic Temple in the chapel.
Isn't it absolutely gorgeous?
(audience applauds) And I'm so delighted to be part of the public television family.
(audience applauds) ("I Loved You Once In Silence") I loved you once in silence And misery was all I knew Trying so to keep my love from showing All the while not knowing you loved me too Yes, loved me in lonesome silence Your heart filled with dark despair Thinking love would flame in you forever And I'd never, never know the flame was there Then one day we cast away our secret longing The raging tide we held inside us held no more The silence at last was broken We flung wide our prison door Every joyous word of love was spoken And now there's twice as much grief Twice the strain for us Twice the despair Twice the pain for us As we had known Before ("If Ever I Would Leave You") If ever I would leave you It wouldn't be in summer Seeing you in summer I never would go Your hair streaked with sunlight Your lips red as flame Your face with a luster That puts gold to shame But if I'd ever leave you It couldn't be in autumn How I'd leave in autumn I never will know I've seen how you sparkle When fall nips the air I know you in autumn And I must be there And could I leave you running merrily Through the snow Or on a wintry evening when you catch The fire's glow If ever I would leave you How could it be in springtime Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so Oh, no, not in springtime summer, winter, or fall No never could I leave you at all (wind blowing) ("Castle of Dromore") The October winds lament Around the castle of Dromore Yet peace is in her lofty halls A phiste gheal a stir Though autumn vines may droop and die A bud of spring are you Sing hush-a-by baby Loo, la lan Sing hush-a- by, loo la loo Take time to thrive my ray of hope In the garden of Dromore Take heed young eaglet 'til your wings Are feathered fit to soar A little rest and then the land Is full of things to do Sing hush-a-by baby, loo, la lan Sing hush-a- by, loo la loo (audience applauds) ("Fields Of Athenry") By a lonely prison wall I heard a young girl calling Michael, they are taking you away For you stole Trevelyan corn So the young might see the morn Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly For our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry By a lonely prison wall I've heard a young man calling Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free Against the famine and the Crown I rebelled, they ran me down Now you must raise our child with dignity Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly For our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry By a lonely harbor wall She watched the last star falling As that prison ship sailed out Against the sky Sure she'll wait, she'll hope, she'll pray For her love in Botany Bay It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly For our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry (audience applauds) Thank you very much.
Thank you.
(audience applauds) (Faith chuckles) (audience applauds) (wind blowing) ("I Believe") I believe for every drop of rain that falls A flower grows I believe that somewhere in the darkest night A candle glows I believe for everyone who goes astray Someone will come To show the way I believe I believe I believe above the storm the smallest prayer Will still be heard I believe that someone in that great somewhere Hears every word Every time I hear a new born baby cry Or touch a leaf or see the sky Then I know why I believe (audience applauding) ("That's All") I can only give you love that lasts forever And a promise to be near each time you call And the only heart I own For you and you alone That's all That's all I can only give you Country walks in springtime And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall And a love whose burning light Will warm the winter's night That's all That's all There are those I am sure who have told you They would give you the world for a toy All I have are these arms to enfold you And a love time can never destroy If you're wondering what I'm asking In return, dear You'll be glad to know my demands are small Say it's me that you'll adore For now and evermore That's all That's all All I have are these arms to enfold you And a love time can never destroy If you're wondering what I'm asking In return, dear You'll be glad to know my demands are small Say it's me that you'll adore For now and evermore That's all That's all (audience applauds) (horse hooves clacking) ("The Kerry Dance") Oh, the nights of the Kerry dancing Oh, the sound of the piper's tune Oh, for one of those hours of madness Piercing sweeter the nights of yore When the lads and lassies gathered In the glen of the summer's night And the sound of piper's tuning Made them thrilled with wild delight Oh, to think of it Oh, to dream of it Gone, alas, like our youth, too soon When the lads and lassies gathered In the glen of the summer's night And the sound of piper's tuning Made them thrilled with wild delight Oh, to think of it Oh, to dream of it Fills my heart with tears Oh, the nights of the Kerry dancing Oh, the sound of the piper's tune Oh, for one of those hours of madness Gone alas like our youth too soon (people clapping and hollering) (people clapping and hollering) (people clapping and hollering) (wind blowing) ("Steal Away") Steal away Let's steal away No reason left to stay For me and you Let's start anew Come darling steal away Steal away Let's steal away No reason left to stay For me, for you Let's start anew Come darling steal away Let's steal away and chase our dreams And hope they'll never find us The weary days The empty nights We'll leave them all behind us Steal away, let's steal away No reason left to stay For me, for you Let's start anew Come darling steal away ("Bridge Over Troubled Water") When you're weary Feeling small When tears are in your eyes I'll dry them all I'm on your side Oh when times get rough And friends just can't be found Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down When you're down and out When you're on the street When evening falls so hard I will comfort you I'll take your part Oh when darkness comes And pain is all around Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Sail on, silver girl Sail on by Your time has come to shine All your dreams are on their way See how they shine Oh if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind ("Lanigan's Ball") In the town of Athy One Jeremy Lanigan battered away 'Til he hadn't a pound His father he died, made him a man again Left him a farm and ten acres of ground He gave a grand party for friends and relations Who did not forget him when pinned to the wall If you but listen, I'll make your eyes glisten Of the rows and the ructions At Lanigan's ball Six long months I spent in Dublin Six long months doing nothing at all Six long months I spent in Dublin I'm learning to dance for Lanigan's ball I stepped out, I stepped in again I stepped out again, I stepped in again I stepped out, I stepped in again Learning to dance for Lanigan's ball Myself, to be sure, got free invitations For all the nice girls and boys I might ask And just in a minute both friends and relations Were dancing as merry as bees 'round a cask There were lashings of punch Wine for the ladies Potatoes and cake, there was bacon and tea Lolans, Dolans and the O'Gradys Courting the girls and dancing away They were doing all kinds of nonsensical polkas All 'round the world in a whirly gig But Julie and I soon banished their nonsense And tipped them a twist of a real Irish jig Oh, how that girl got mad on me And danced 'til you'd think The ceilings would fall For I spent three weeks at Brook's Academy Learning to dance for Lanigan's ball Six long months I spent in Dublin Six long months doing nothing at all Six long months I spent in Dublin Learning to dance for Lanigan's ball I stepped out, I stepped in again I stepped out again, I stepped in again I stepped out ALL: Yee-ha!
I stepped in again Learning to dance for Lanigan's ball The boys were as merry, the girls all hearty Dancing away in couples and groups 'Til an accident happened Young Terence McCarthy He put his right leg Through Miss Finerty's hoops The creature, she fainted and cried millia murther Called for her brothers and gathered them all Carmody swore he'd go no further 'Til he'd had satisfaction At Lanigan's ball In the midst of the row Miss Kerrigan fainted Her cheeks at the same time as red as a rose Some of the boys decried she was painted She took a small drop too much as I suppose Her sweetheart Ned Morgan so powerful and able He saw his fair Colleen stretched by the wall He tore the left leg from under the table And smashed all the dishes at Lanigan's ball Six long months I spent in Dublin Six long months doing nothing at all Six long months I spent in Dublin Learning to dance for Lanigan's ball I stepped out, I stepped in again I stepped out again, I stepped in again I stepped out, I stepped in again Learning to dance for Lanigan's ball Oh boys, oh boys 'til then there was ructions Myself got a kick from Phelam McHugh But soon I replied to his kind introduction And kicked up a terrible hullabaloo Old Casey the piper was near being strangled They squeezed up his pipes Bellows chanters and all The girls and their ribbons They got all entangled And that put an end to Lanigan's ball Six long months I spent in Dublin Six long months doing nothing at all Six long months I spent in Dublin Learning to dance ALL: Yee-ha!
For Lanigan's ball I stepped out, I stepped in again I stepped out again, I stepped in again I stepped out, I stepped in again Learning to dance for Lanigan's ball ("The Town I Loved So Well") In my memory I will always see The town that I have loved so well Where our school played ball by the Gasyard Wall And we laughed through the smoke and the smell Going home in the rain running up the dark lane Passed the jail and down behind the fountain Those were happy days in so many, many ways In the town I loved so well In the early morn the shirt-factory's horn Called the women from Creggan The Moor and the Bog While the man on the dole played the mother's role Fed the children and then walked the dogs But when times got tough There was just about enough And they saw it through without complaining For deep inside was a burning pride In the town I loved so well There was music there in the Derry air Like a language we all could understand I remember the day when I earned my first pay When I played in a small pick-up band There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth I was sad to leave it all behind me For I'd learned about strife And I've found my life In the town I loved so well But when I returned how my eyes were burned To see how a town could be brought to its knees By the armored cars and the bombed-out bars And the gas that hangs on to every breeze Now the army's installed by the old Gasyard Wall And the damned barbed wire Gets higher and higher With their tanks and guns (explosion sounds) Oh my god what have they done To the town I loved so well Now the music's gone but they carry on For their spirit's been bruised never broken They will not forget for their hearts are set On tomorrow and peace once again For what's done is done and what's won is won And what's lost is lost and gone forever I can only pray for a bright brand new day In the town I loved so well (audience applauds) FAITH: You know, a conflict that is around our world, we watch as our loved ones go off to war and yet isn't it true that on each side there is a Danny Boy.
("Danny Boy") Oh Danny boy The pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen And down the mountain side The summer's gone And all the flow'rs are dying 'Tis you, 'tis you Must go and I must bide But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed And white with snow And I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy Oh Danny boy, I love you so But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed And white with snow And I'll be here In sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy I love you so I love you so I love you so (audience applauds) Thank you.
(audience applauds) (audience applauds) Thank you.
(audience applauds) ("Let Us Love In Peace") Dream about a day when we'll be Calm, serene, completely carefree Just for fun Think of one Ordinary day Ask yourself what it would feel like Dream the dream with all of your might Close your eyes Visualize Just one normal day Time to find out who we are Time to find our lucky star Time for all our pain to cease We'll love in peace Just imagine no more violence No more bombs, the sound of silence Time to be You and me Time to love in peace Days of hope so calm and tranquil Private moments to be thankful On our own Left alone Free to love in peace Time to simply sit and breathe Time to learn how to believe And give thanks for our release To love in peace Time to dance and time to grow Time to learn and time to know Time to prosper and increase Make love in peace Sometimes I get on my knees And pray for that one ordinary day When all the pain would finally cease Then we'll be free to love in peace Just for fun Think of one Ordinary day (marching drums) ("Somewhere") There's a place for us Somewhere a place for us Peace and quiet and open air Wait for us Somewhere There's a time for us Someday a time for us Time together with time to spare Time to learn, time to care Someday Somewhere We'll find a new way of living We'll find a way of forgiving Somewhere There's a place for us A time and place for us Hold my hand and we're half way there Hold my hand and I'll take you there Somehow Someday Somewhere ("Over The Rainbow") Somewhere over the rainbow way up high There's a land that I heard of Once in a lullaby Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far Behind me Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away upon the chimney tops That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why then, oh, why can't I If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh, why Can't I (audience applauds) FAITH: Thank you.
(audience applauds) (audience applauds) Thank you.
Thank you.
(audience applauds) You're wonderful.
(audience whistles) Fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry It's so lonely 'Round the fields Of Athenry
