(INDISTINCT CHATTER) (APPLAUSE AND CHEERING) (SIREN BLARING) (APPLAUSE AND CHEERING SWELL) (PIANO PLAYS INTRO TO MIAMI 2017 ) Seen the lights go out Broadway I saw the Empire State laid low And life went on beyond the Palisades They all bought Cadillacs And left there long ago We held a concert out in Brooklyn (AUDIENCE CHEERING) To watch the island bridges blow They turned our power down And drove us underground But we went right on with the show Oh, oh, oh I've seen the lights go out on Broadway I saw the ruins at my feet You know we almost didn't notice it We'd seen it all the time on 42nd street They burned the churches up in Harlem Like in that Spanish Civil War The flames were everywhere But no one really cared It always burned up there before Oh, oh Oh, oh, oh I've seen the lights go out on Broadway I watched the mighty skyline fall The boats were waiting at the Battery The union went on strike They never sailed at all They sent a carrier out from Norfolk And picked the Yankees up for free They said that Queens could stay They blew the Bronx away And sank Manhattan out at sea BILLY: (VOCALIZING) (VOCALIZING) You know those lights were bright on Broadway (AUDIENCE CHEERING) That was so many years ago Before we all lived here in Florida Before the Mafia took over Mexico There are not many who remember They say a handful still survive To tell the world about The way the lights went out And keep the memory alive (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (SONG ENDS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (BAND PLAYS INTRO TO MY LIFE ) (PLAYING BEETHOVEN'S ODE TO JOY ) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Ooh, yeah All right Yeah Got a call from an old friend We used to be real close Said he couldn't go on the American way Closed his shop Sold the house Bought a ticket to the west coast Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.
I don't need you to worry for me 'cause I'm alright I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home I don't care what you say anymore This is my life Go ahead with your own life Leave me alone I never said you had to offer me a second chance I never said you had to I never said I was a victim of circumstance I never said I still belong CHORUS: Still belong Don't get me wrong CHORUS: Get me wrong You can speak your mind But not on my time They will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place Oh, then they're gonna tell you You can't sleep with somebody else Ah, but sooner or later You sleep in your own space Either way, it's okay You wake up with yourself I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm alright I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home I don't care what you say anymore This is my life Go ahead with your own life Leave me alone I never said you had to offer me a second chance CHORUS: I never said you had to... I never said I was a victim of circumstance Of circumstance... BILLY: And I still belong CHORUS: Still belong... Don't get me wrong, oh CHORUS: Get me wrong...
And you can speak your mind But not on my time I don't care what you say anymore This is my life Go ahead with your own life Leave me alone CHORUS: Keep it to yourself, it's my life... Ooh, it's my life CHORUS: Keep it to yourself It's my life... Ooh, keep it to yourself Ooh, ooh, ooh CHORUS: Keep it to yourself It's my life... Yeah, it's my life (SONG ENDS) (APPLAUSE AND CHEERING) BILLY: Thank you very much.
Welcome to Madison Square Garden.
This next song is from an album that came out in 1977.
The album was called The Stranger.
And this was not a single released from that album.
It wasn't a hit single, it was just an album track, but people seemed to gravitate towards this song, so we do it.
This is called Vienna.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (MUSIC BEGINS) Slow down, you crazy child You're so ambitious for a juvenile But then if you're so smart Tell me why are you still so afraid?
Mmm... Where's the fire What's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out You've got so much to do And only so many hours in a day Hey You never know when the truth is told You can get what you want, or you can just get old You're gonna kick out Before you even get halfway through Ooh When will you realize Vienna waits for you?
Slow down, you're doin' fine You can't be everything you wanna be before your time Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight Tonight Too bad, but it's the life you lead You're so ahead of yourself That you forgot what you need Though you can see when you're wrong You know you can't always see when you're right You're right You've got your passion You've got your pride But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true Ooh When will you realize Vienna waits for you?
(MUSIC CONTINUES) Slow down, you crazy child Take the phone off the hook And disappear for a while It's all right You can afford to lose a day or two Ooh When will you realize Vienna waits for you?
And you know that when the truth is told That you can get what you want Or you could just get old You're gonna kick off Before you even get halfway through Ooh... Why don't you realize Vienna waits for you?
Why don't you realize Vienna waits for you?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (MUSIC ENDS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (MOUTHING) Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
(PLAYING PIANO) Um, this next song was from an album that came out in 1989, the album was called Storm Front.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Yeah, they kind of liked that album.
(AUDIENCE CHUCKLING) Um... Yes, I wrote this for the fishermen on Long Island.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) They're not having an easy time of it.
But I always wanted to write a folk song, and this is about as close as I've ever gotten to writing a folk song.
This is called the Downeaster, "Alexa".
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (INTRO TO DOWNEASTER "ALEXA" PLAYING) Well, I'm on the downeaster "Alexa" And I'm cruising through Block Island Sound I have charted a course to the Vineyard But tonight I am Nantucket bound We took on diesel back in Montauk yesterday Left this morning from the bell in Gardiner's Bay Like all the locals here I've had to sell my home Too proud to leave, I work my fingers to the bone So I could own my downeaster "Alexa" And I go where the ocean is deep There are giants out there in the canyons And a good captain can't fall asleep I've got bills to pay and children who need clothes I know there's fish out there, but where God only knows They say these waters aren't what they used to be But I got people back on land who count on me So if you see my downeaster "Alexa" And if you work with the rod and the reel Tell my wife I am trolling Atlantis And I still have my hands on the wheel Yay-o Yay-o Yay-yay-o Now I drive my downeaster "Alexa" More and more miles from shore every year Since they told me I can't sell no stripers There ain't no luck in swordfishing here I was a bayman like my father was before Can't make a living as a bayman anymore There ain't much future for a man who works the sea But there ain't no island left for islanders like me Yay-yay-yay-o Yay-yay-yay-o Yay-yay-yay-o Yay-yay-yay-o (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (AUDIENCE WHISTLING) Thank you.
We're in the round, yeah?
This is the best venue that we've ever played.
This is our favorite place... (DRUM BEATS) ...to play.
And we play in a lot bigger places.
We play similar arenas, but this is the Garden, this is the place.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) I first came here when I was a little boy.
I think I was about four or five years old.
My parents brought me to the circus.
And the star of that year was Gene Autry.
He had a big hit with... Uh... Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, right?
(SCATTERED CHEERING) (IMITATING GENE AUTRY) Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer Had a little shiny nose... Okay, okay, okay, they know how it goes.
So he tells everybody, (IN WESTERN ACCENT) I want y'all to sing along with me.
And he's got his cowboy outfit on.
He's got his... his six guns.
(WITH ACCENT) So, yeah, yeah, I want y'all to sing.
(NORMAL ACCENT) So the audience doesn't really sing along while he starts and he stops the song.
(WITH ACCENT) I said, I want everybody to sing and he starts shooting these pistols.
And I thought he was aiming right at me.
(FAINT LAUGHTER) (IMITATING LITTLE BOY SINGING) Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer It was my first Garden performance.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) I ain't no Mick Jagger.
(FAINT CHEERING) He does that triangle thing.
(AUDIENCE SHOUTING INDISTINCTLY) (IN LOW PITCH) Bo, bo, bo.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Cha, cha, cha Cha, cha, cha Okay, who starts this?
(INDISTINCT) Mark.
(MOUTHING) Dum dum dum ALL: Woah, oh, oh, oh For the longest time Woah, oh, oh For the longest time If you said Goodbye to me tonight (CHORUS VOCALIZING) There would still be music left to ride (CHORUS VOCALIZING) What else could I do?
I'm so inspired by you That hasn't happened ALL: For the longest time (CHORUS VOCALIZING) Once I thought my innocence was gone (VOCALIZING) Now I know that happiness goes on (VOCALIZING) That's where you find me When you put your arms around me I haven't been there ALL: For the longest time Woah, oh, oh, oh For the longest time ALL: Woah, oh, oh CHORUS: For the longest For the longest I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall And the greatest miracle of all (VOCALIZING) Is how I need you And how you needed me too That hasn't happened ALL: For the longest time Maybe this won't last very long (CHORUS VOCALIZING) You feel so right I could be wrong Maybe I've been hoping too hard I've gone this far And it's more than I hope for Who knows how much further we'll go on?
Maybe, maybe Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone (VOCALIZING) I'll take my chances I forgot how nice romance is I haven't been there ALL: For the longest time I had second thoughts at the start (CHORUS VOCALIZING) I says to myself Hold on to your heart Now I know the woman that you are You're wonderful so far (CHORUS VOCALIZING) And it's more than I hoped for I don't care what consequence it brings I have been a fool for lesser things (CHORUS VOCALIZING) I want you so bad I think you ought to know that I intend to hold you ALL: For the longest time (CHORUS SNAPPING FINGERS) Woah, oh, oh, oh For the longest time Woah, oh, oh For the longest time Woah, oh, oh For the longest time Woah, oh, oh (VOCALIZING) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) ALL: For The (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (SCATTERED WHISTLING) Long... ...est... (SCATTERED CHEERING) (INAUDIBLE CHATTERING) Time (ALL VOCALIZING) (SONGS ENDS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) BILLY: Thank you.
BILLY: All right.
This next song is from an album that came out in 1975.
The album was called Street Life Serenade.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) You don't have that album.
Nobody bought that album.
(SCATTERED CHEERING) I found mine in a bin somewhere.
(DRUMBEATS) Uh, anyway, I was watching a TV show, this is back in the 70's, and the midnight special or something.
(IMITATING) With Wolfman Jack.
(AUDIENCE SCATTERED CHEERING) It was corn ball.
It was just... I don't know.
I... It was just weird.
I just... wanted to write a song about... some of the... I was looking at.
So... People think this is autobiographical.
It's not.
This is about... this business, I guess.
It's a wonderful business.
Don't... don't get me wrong.
I love this job.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) You ever get a chance to do this job?
Do the job.
A great gig.
But this is called The Entertainer.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (DRUMSTICKS COUNT OFF) (INTRO TO THE ENTERTAINER PLAYING) I am the entertainer And I know just where I stand Another serenade And another long hair band Today, I am your champion I may have won your hearts But I know the game, you'll forget my name And I won't be here in another year If I don't stay on the charts I am the entertainer I've had to pay my price The things that did not go first I learned by doin' twice Ah, but still they come to haunt me Still they want their say So I've learned to dance with a hand in my pants Let 'em rub my neck and I write 'em a check And they go their merry way I am the entertainer Been all around the world I've played all kinds of palaces And laid all kinds of girls I can't remember faces I don't remember names Ah, but what the hell You know it's just as well 'Cause after a while and a million miles It all becomes the same I am the entertainer I bring to you my songs I'd like to spend a day or two But I can't stay that long No, I've got to meet expenses I've got to stay in line Gotta get those fees to the agencies And I'd love to stay but there's bills to pay So I just don't have the time I am the entertainer I come to do my show You've heard my latest record It's been on the radio Ah, it took me years to write it They were the best years of my life It was a beautiful song But, it ran too long If you're gonna have a hit You gotta make it fit So they cut it down to 3:05 I am the entertainer The idol of my age I make all kinds of money When I go on the stage Ah, you've seen me in the papers I've been in the magazines But if I go cold I won't get sold I'll get put in the back in the discount rack Like another can of beans I am the entertainer And I know just where I stand Another serenader And another long-haired band Today, I am your champion I may have won your heart But I know the game and you'll forget my name I won't be here in another year If I don't stay on the charts (SONG ENDS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) BILLY: Thank you.
