Barbra Streisand - Timeless: Live in Concert
(INDISTINCT CHATTER) (LAUGHTER) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (CLAPPING) (CONTINUOUS THUDDING) (UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) (MUSIC INTENSIFIES) (MUSIC STOPS) AUDIENCE: Whoo!
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (DRAMATIC BEAT) (DRAMATIC BEAT CONTINUES) (DRAMATIC BEAT STOPS) (UPBEAT MUSIC INTENSIFIES) (TRUMPET SOUNDS) (DRUM ROLL) (TRUMPET SOUNDS CONTINUE) (DRUM ROLL CONTINUES) (MUSIC SLOWS) (TROMBONE SOUNDS) (MUSIC INTENSIFIES) (UPBEAT MUSIC CONTINUES) (MUSIC STOPS) (UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) (MUSIC SLOWS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Okay, let's get started.
We're on the clock.
This is costing a fortune.
$25 an hour.
Pull up your socks.
Mom, who's gonna see?
All right, all right.
Stand up tall.
Oh, oh, you know that part?
I meant to talk to you about it.
Huh?
In the middle where you play along?
Yeah.
Don't you think it's a little too long?
I really think you should shorten it.
Shorten it?
I have a better idea.
Why don't you just cut it out completely?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING FAINTLY) Kid, just do what I tell ya.
Listen to him, Barbra.
Well, don't you think it's a little bit long?
All right, let's rehearse the ending.
Here's how it goes.
Stop... Stop fidgeting I'm not!
INSTRUCTOR: Pay attention.
(PLAYING PIANO) You'll never know if you don't know now Okay.
Nice and simple.
You got it, kid?
Yeah, I got it.
Don't change a note.
Okay, okay.
(PIANO PLAYING) If there is some other way to prove that I love you I swear I don't know how You'll never know If you don't know now (PIANO STOPS ABRUPTLY) INSTRUCTOR: You did that wrong.
I... I don't understand, we've rehearsed this for hours.
You do it different every time.
I can't get her to sing the same thing twice.
She doesn't listen.
She never listens.
Well, who does she think she is?
She told me to cut my solo.
She said it was too long.
So you play it on my record.
Let's rehearse.
I play the Catskills, for God's sakes.
(MOTHER MUMBLES) She ain't ever gonna play the Catskills.
What key do I sing it in?
Difficult kid.
She's never gonna make it.
You'll never know just how-- You're wasting your money.
Oh, well.
She won't make it.
She'll work in the school system.
You should work in the school... She should listen to me.
I'm a professional musician.
(SOMETHING'S COMING PLAYING) (ARGUING INDISTINCTLY) Could be Who knows There's something due any day I will know right away Soon as it shows It may come cannonballing down through the sky Gleam in its eye Bright as a rose Hi!
(MUSIC CONTINUES PLAYING) Thank you for coming.
You're very brave to go on and on.
(LAUGHS) (AUDIENCE CONTINUES CHEERING) Thank you.
(AUDIENCE CHEERS LOUDER) Thank you.
Wow.
Whoo!
Nice, nice.
I got a feeling there's a miracle due Gonna come true Comin' to me!
Could it be?
Oh, yes, it could Something's comin' Something good If I can wait!
Something's comin' I don't know what it is But it is gonna be great!
With a click Click With a shock Shock Phone'll jingle Door will knock Open the latch Something's comin' Don't know when But it's soon Catch the moon One-handed catch!
Around the corner Or whistlin' down the river Come on Come on Deliver BOTH: To me!
Will it be?
Oh, yes, it will Maybe just by holdin' still It'll be there Come on, something Come on in Don't be shy Meet a guy Pull up a chair!
The air Is hummin' Humming BOTH: And something great is comin'!
Kid, I like what you sang.
Keep listening to that voice inside.
You'll hear it in your head, feel it in your gut, know it in your heart.
You'll feel The drumming And something great is comin'!
Barbra!
Coming, coming.
Who knows?
It's only just out of reach Down the block, on a beach Maybe tonight BOTH: Maybe tonight Maybe tonight Whoo!
(AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) My little girl self.
Now, I know you all could have been anywhere tonight.
So I'm really, really grateful that you have chosen to spend this special time with me.
Thank you.
(ORCHESTRAL MUSIC PLAYING) You know, I still remember that first recording session.
I was 13.
As if it were yesterday.
My mother and I both wanted to make a record.
She had a beautiful voice, my mother.
High, operatic.
Anyway, I wasn't trying to be difficult, you know.
It just came naturally.
What can I say?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) I heard what the piano player said, but when I sang something, something else came out.
You know, I-I think it was the first time I ever experienced... I guess what they call "inspiration," because... I didn't know where those notes came from.
But it's a moment I'll never forget.
Like tonight.
(AUDIENCE CHEERS) Can you imagine that this is the last night of a thousand years?
(AUDIENCE CHEERS) Yeah, isn't that something?
We're here to see it.
And they say that you don't know where you're going until you know where you've been.
So perhaps at the dawn of a new century, it's an appropriate time for all of us to look back and reflect.
(THE WAY WE WERE PLAYING) (AUDIENCE CHEERS, APPLAUDS) Memories Light the corners of my mind Misty watercolor memories Of the way we were Scattered pictures Of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time rewritten every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me, would we?
Could we?
Memories May be beautiful and yet What's too painful to remember We simply choose to forget So it's the laughter We will remember Whenever we remember The way we were The way we were (HUMMING) (SONG ENDS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) (BARBRA GIGGLES) Marvin.
Marvin wrote that.
Isn't that great?
(MOUTHING) Thank you.
Thank you.
When you think of it, how extraordinary, huh?
Practically the whole world is in the next century.
And we're still in this one.
Now, actually, it's kind of great.
Let them test the waters, right?
(LAUGHS) (AUDIENCE LAUGHS) Mmm.
And since you're all here with me tonight and not home watching TV... I, um... I've arranged-- Well, we have arranged a satellite hookup so you can see what was going on in the rest of the world.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Isn't this cool?
The first big party is under way down under in Sydney, Australia.
(AMUSING MUSIC PLAYING) A million people are celebrating at the pyramids!
And we have our own pyramid.
Did you notice?
Oh, they're sipping champagne in Paris.
Yes.
(UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) They're dancing in the streets of Rio.
(UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) They've dropped the big ball in Times Square.
(CELEBRATORY MUSIC PLAYING) Yeah!
Whoo!
Whoo!
And then there's Libya.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) I think they got the wrong address, I don't know.
(SIGHS) Did you ever wonder what this night was like a thousand years ago in 999?
I mean, was there a Y1K problem?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Barbra, why are you even wondering?
Ask me.
I was there.
Shirl.
Shirley MacLaine!
Wow.
Isn't that something?
Happy New Year, honey.
Well, Happy New Year.
Now look, Shirley, of course you were there.
Why didn't I think of that?
So, Shirl, were people worried about Y1K then?
You know, some were.
They were hoarding candles in case the sun went out.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) They believed that?
Yeah, some people were worried, like now.
Really?
So what, were most people poor then or... what?
Most were, but not everyone.
But there was this guy... Yeah.
...who melted sand into glass.
And then he put, uh, the glass in between two pieces of wood... Yeah.
...and he called his invention "Windows 1000."
(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) And, you know, next thing you know, everyone wants one.
Yeah.
I bet he made more money than the Pope.
Yeah, for a while.
And then the Pope came up with Stained Glass Windows 1000.
Stained Glass Windows?
Then... Well, the government got involved, and... Yeah, must have been a... Yeah, it was a big mess.
Yeah.
So, did the Y1K problem affect you, Shirley?
No.
No?
I was touring Tibet back then.
Oh, were you doing a book tour?
No, I was doing a show.
Oh, really?
What show?
Uh, Cats.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Oh, my God, it has been playing forever.
(LAUGHTER CONTINUES) From what you said, it doesn't sound like Y1K was a huge problem, right?
You know, it really wasn't.
The men were a bit concerned.
You should talk to one of them.
Oh, like who?
Dick Clark.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Dick Clark was there?
Yup.
The same Dick Clark?
Yeah.
And he looked great.
Same as he does now.
(LAUGHS) I don't know how he does it, but you look great too, Shirley.
You really do.
Thanks.
You know, I've had many happy returns, Barbra.
So I always start with a new beginning.
(CHUCKLES) Ah!
And this is a new beginning for all of us, isn't it?
Yes, a new beginning.
And I wanna wish everyone here, everyone a wonderful new life.
Or lives.
Whatever.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) Right.
Happy new beginnings, everybody.
Thank you.
(APPLAUSE) Thank you, Shirley.
What do you think?
Do they look like yours?
They're like butter.
Thanks, Shirley.
Bye.
(ORCHESTRAL MUSIC PLAYING) I invited someone to join us tonight who's been with me since the very beginning.
You know him.
Some of you chase him, some embrace him, others waste him.
He can tick-tock, ring and chime.
I'm sure you've guessed by now, he's time with a capital T. Oh, no.
Some of you expected a guy, an old guy with a long gray beard.
No, he's young, even though he's been around forever.
So don't call him Father Time.
He prefers to be called Brother Time, and he's my friend.
And tonight, not only did I want time on my side, but by my side as we go back, first stop.
How about 1961?
(PIANO PLAYING) Okay?
Do you remember where... where you were?
I had never been to a nightclub before I won a talent contest at a little place in the Village where I was making $50 a week and all the London broil I could eat.
And then I got a job at... around the corner it was, yeah, at the Bon Soir, at a bigger club, which I loved, except for the fact that they didn't serve food.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) My clothes came from thrift shops.
(WHISPERING) Thank you.
And I was very happy.
Of course, back then, I didn't have all these wonderful musicians.
I could only hear them in my head.
The Bon Soir just had a piano... (PIANO PLAYS) ...guitar, drums and a bass.
(DRUM ROLLS, PIANO CONTINUES PLAYING) MAN: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to New York City's Bon Soir.
(APPLAUSE) Now you say you're lonely You cry the long night through Well, you can cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you Now you say you're sorry For being so untrue Well, you can cry me a river Cry me a river I cried over you You drove me Nearly drove me out of my head While you never shed a tear Remember I remember all that you said Told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me And now you say You love me Well, just to prove that you do Come on and cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you I cried a river Over you (AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) As time would have it, a couple of years later, I left the Lower West Side and went uptown to a swankier nightclub called Basin Street East.
Benny Goodman was the headliner.
I was his, um, opening act.
In fact, on this next song, Benny joined me on stage to play his clarinet.
(CLARINET PLAYING) And it was the first time I got to perform with a live orchestra and lots of brass!
(ORCHESTRAL MUSIC PLAYING) The sky was blue And high above The moon was new And so was love This eager heart of mine was singing Lover, where can you be?
You came at last Love had its day That day is past 'Cause you've gone away This aching heart of mine is singing Lover, come back to me When I remember every little thing you used to do I'm lonely Every road I walk along I walked along with you No wonder I'm lonely The sky is blue The night is cold The moon is new But love is old And while I'm waiting here, this heart of mine is singing Lover, come to me The sky is blue The night is cold Ho-ho-ho The moon is new And yet love is old And while I'm standing here This heart of mine is singing, lover Lover, lover, lover Get yourself here to me Now (AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) Thank you.
One of the, um... the loveliest memories I have is working with the brilliant Harold Arlen, who wrote the music to The Wizard of Oz, Come Rain or Come Shine, and dozens of other standards like this next one, which was the, um... the first Broadway song that I ever sang.
When you're in love And you are wondering If he really is the one There's an ancient sign sure to tell you If your search is over and done Catch a bee And if he don't sting you You're in a spell that's just begun It's a guarantee till the end of time Your true love you have won Have won When a bee lies sleeping In the palm of your hand You're bewitched and deep In love's long looked-after land Where you'll see a sun-up sky With a morning new And where the days go laughin' by As love comes calling on you Sleep on bee Don't wake up Can't believe what just passed He's mine for the takin' I am happy at last Maybe I dreams But he seems sweet golden as a crown A little sleeping bee Told me I will walk with my feet off the ground When my one true love I has found (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Thank you, thank you.
Oh, see this chair?
This chair and I kind of started together.
The first time I sat in it was when I was 18 years old.
Um... 19 years old.
On stage at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) And... (CHUCKLES) You're too young to know that.
What I loved about the theater was being able to, um, create a character, and for a couple of hours a night, live in her world.
Like, um... (MUFFLED) Is it cool?
Yeah, good.
(LAUGHS) Like Miss Marmelstein from I Can Get It For You Wholesale.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Whoo!
The Miss Marmelstein Club.
I hear there's a Miss Marmelstein Club.
Is that true?
(DISTANT CHEERING) Can you believe it?
Now, she wanted to be more than just an underappreciated secretary.
Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein Oh, why is it always Miss Marmelstein?
WOMAN: Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein?
WOMAN: Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein?
MAN: Miss Marmelstein Other girls get called by their nicknames right away Slightly naughty or risque Do you know what I mean?
Nobody calls me, "Hey, baby doll" MAN: Miss Marmelstein Or "Koo-chee-koo" MAN: Miss Marmelstein Or "Sweetie pie" WOMAN: Miss Marmelstein Even my first name would be preferable Though it's terrible It might be better It's Yetta Or perhaps my second name That's Tessye Spelled T-E-S-S-Y-E But no, no, it's always Miss Marmelstein MAN: Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein?
ALL: Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein?
WOMAN: Miss Marmelstein Even "Hey there, babe," though not respectable Ain't so objectable It's kind of crummy But chummy Of course, if I got married that would do it So, where's the lucky guy?
Huh?
Till then, it still is Miss Marmelstein WOMAN: Miss Marmelstein Every day I get tied up in knots MAN: Miss Marmelstein?
Miss Marmelstein WOMAN: Miss Marmelstein Miss Marmelstein?
Oh, I could plotz!
(CROWD CHEERING, APPLAUDING) (BARBRA LAUGHING) Ah!
Marmelstein.
Now there's a... There's a name, huh?
Almost as tough as mine.
Which is Streisand with an S, right?
Like sand on the beach.
And I still get Strei-zand.
The Strei-zand.
You know, with a Z. My friend Liza has the Z. I'm Streisand with an S, you know?
Hmm.
I just love it when people say my name right.
MAN: Miss Brice?
Miss Brice?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Mr.
Ziegfield?
Is that you, Mr.
Ziegfield?
ZIEGFELD: It's Ziegfeld.
No "I."
Oh, right.
How could I do that... ZIEGFELD: Miss Brice, I'm supposed to pick your material.
BARBRA: Oh.
ZIEGFELD: It's not your place to do that.
Why do you always have to be difficult?
Well, I'm not trying to be difficult.
I just have my own ideas.
Why don't you just give me a chance?
ZIEGFELD: Good night, Miss Brice.
Now, wait a minute, Mr.
Ziegfield-- feld.
You're Jewish, right?
ZIEGFELD: So?
So, suppose all you ever had for breakfast was onion rolls, and all of a sudden, one morning in walks a bagel.
I mean, you take a look at it, you say... "What is that?"
Until you've tried it.
So that's my trouble.
ZIEGFELD: What's your trouble?
I'm a bagel on a plate full of onion rolls.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) MAN: Miss Brice.
Yes?
(WHIMSICAL MUSIC PLAYING) ZIEGFELD: Who do you think you are?
Well, I could go far (AUDIENCE CHEERING, CLAPPING) But no one knows it ZIEGFELD: Bye!
Wait!
They're gonna hear a voice A silver flute Ah, ah, ah, ah They'll cheer each toot Hey, that kid is terrific.
Yeah.
When I expose it Now, can't you see to look at me That I'm a natural Camille?
As Camille, I just feel I've so much to offer Listen, Mr.
Z, I know I'd be divine because... I'm a natural cougher (COUGHS DRAMATICALLY) Some ain't got it Not a lump I'm a great big clump Who's wearing second hand hats Second hand clothes That's why they call me Second hand Rose Even our piano in the parlor Father bought for ten cents on the dollar Second hand pearls I'm wearing Second hand curls I never get a single thing that's new Even Jake the plumber He's the man I adore Had the nerve to tell me He's been married before Everyone knows that I'm just Rose Second hand Rose From Second Avenue From Second Ave... Who is the pip with pizzaz?
Who is all ginger and jazz?
Who is as glamorous as?
Who's an American Beauty rose?
With an American Beauty nose?
And ten American Beauty toes?
Eyes on the target and wham!
One shot One rim shot and bam!
Hey, Mr.
Ziegfeld Here I am I'll march my band out I'll beat my drum And if I'm fanned out Your turn at bat, sir At least I didn't fake it Hat, sir I guess I didn't make it Get ready for me, life, 'cause I'm a comer I simply gotta march My heart's a drummer Nobody, no, nobody Is gonna Rain on my Parade (CROWD CHEERING, APPLAUDING) Wow.
Thank you.
That's cool.
Thank you.
Thank you.
You liked that one, huh?
Thank you.
(LAUGHS) That's nice.
All right.
(CROWD SHOUTING) (CHUCKLES) Does it seem like six years ago?
Some of you were here before, six years ago?
(CROWD CHEERING) Wow.
Oh, mmm.
It seems like only five years ago.
No.
Um... (CHUCKLES) Since we're already on Broadway, I thought we'd stay a while longer because... (CROWD CLAPPING) Broadway, as you know, has given us such great songs.
And the test of a great song, in my opinion, is not whether it went to number one.
But did it touch people's lives?
And did it stand the test of time?
Like these next songs have.
(SOMETHING WONDERFUL PLAYING) He may not always say What you would have him say But now and then he'll say Something wonderful The thoughtless things he'll do Will hurt and worry you Then all at once, he'll do Something wonderful He has a thousand dreams That won't come true You know that he believes in them And that's enough for you You'll always go along Defend him when he's wrong And tell him when he's strong He is so wonderful He'll always need your love And so he'll get your love This man who needs your love Can be wonderful (BEING ALIVE PLAYING) (AUDIENCE APPLAUDS) We all want... Someone to hold you too close Someone to hurt you too deep Someone to sit in your chair and ruin your sleep And make you aware of being alive Someone you have to let in Someone whose feelings you spare Someone who, like it or not, will want you to share A little, a lot of being alive Make me alive Make me confused Mock me with praise Let me be used Vary my days But alone is alone, ha-ha Not alive Somebody crowd me with love Somebody force me to care Somebody let me come through I'll always be there Frightened as you To help us survive Being alive Being alive Being alive Being alive (CROWD CHEERING) (APPLAUSE) All right, guys.
Thank you.
Thank you.
(ORCHESTRAL MUSIC PLAYING) Don't you just think movies when you hear that music, huh?
As a kid, I loved the movies.
They meant so much to me.
They took me to another place where I could... imagine myself as someone else, somewhere else.
They really did help shape my dreams.
You must remember this (AUDIENCE CLAPPING) A kiss is still a kiss A sigh is just a sigh The fundamental things apply As time goes by And when two lovers woo They still say, "I love you" On that you can rely No matter what the future brings Mister Time goes by I feel Wherever I go That tomorrow is here Tomorrow is here And always too soon Time is so old And love so brief Love is pure gold And time a thief Oh, I like the third one on the left.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Wait, don't run out on me.
I'm having a good time.
Oh, oh.
It's just to remind me to move it along.
Okay, okay, I got it.
I got to tell you a fast story.
One day... a number of years ago, I was in a cab on my way to a recording studio and... the radio was on, and I heard this girl singing.
And I thought, "What a pretty song.
"Why haven't I recorded that?"
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) So when I arrived at the studio, I called the station.
I... Yeah, I wanted to know who the girl was, and they said it was me.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) This is a true story.
I even think they said my name right.
Um... I... I couldn't believe it, you know, because I thought, I guess I had made... I don't know how many albums by then, 45 or something, and so many songs.
I actually forgot that I recorded that one.
(AUDIENCE CLAPPING) So... (CHUCKLES) I'd like to sing it for you tonight.
It's one of the most beautiful movie themes that I've... ever heard, written by my friend, Burt Bacharach.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) What's it all about, Alfie?
(AUDIENCE CLAPPING) Is it just For the moment we live?
What's it all about?
When you sort it out, Alfie Are we meant to take more than we give?
Or are we meant To be kind?
And if only fools are kind Alfie Then I guess it is wise to be cruel And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie What will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe There's a heaven above, Alfie I know there's something much more Something even non-believers Can believe in I believe in love Alfie Without true love, we just exist, Alfie Until you find the love you've missed You're nothing, Alfie When you walk Let your heart lead the way And you'll find love Any day, Alfie Alfie Alfie (CROWD CHEERING, APPLAUDING) Such a pretty song, isn't it?
That was neat.
Thank you.
Growing up, I always wanted to write music.
Maybe a symphony, maybe something for a movie, you know?
And when I was 14, I remember... standing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush, conducting Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, crying.
I also wanted to play the part, by the way.
It was my first dream hyphenate, conductor-actress.
Anyway, as time went by, I did write the music for several songs, most of which I'm sure you've never heard.
But... you have.
(CHUCKLES) And with songwriting not being my day job, you can imagine what a thrill it was to... to have the opportunity to write a song, to actually write a song for a movie.
This was thrilling.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) (VOCALIZING) Love Soft as an easy chair Love Fresh as the morning air One love That is shared by two I have found With you Like a rose Under the April snow I was always certain love would grow Love Ageless and evergreen Seldom, seldom seen by two You and I Will make each night a first Every day a beginning Spirits rise And their dance is unrehearsed They warm and excite us 'Cause we have the brightest love Two lights that shine as one Morning glory and the midnight sun Time we've learned to sail above Time won't change the meaning of One love Ageless and ever Ever Green Evergreen (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Thank you.
Thank you.
One night, um... a few years ago, I was sitting around at home with two of my girlfriends and they were talking about... their fathers.
And since my own father died when I was 15 months old, I really couldn't relate.
And at the end of the evening, I went up to my office to... It's just tea, you know.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) (CHUCKLING) ...to check my mail, and... I found an envelope on the desk.
And when I opened it, I couldn't believe what I saw.
It was a letter.
(EMOTIONAL MUSIC PLAYING) Written by my father... more than 60 years before, to a woman he was dating when he was 19 years old, before he met my mother.
And this very nice woman thought I should have it.
I can't quite describe the feeling.
It was as if my... my father was somehow... trying to communicate something.
It was a profound experience for me.
Mystical.
Papa (CROWD CHEERING) Can you hear me?
Papa, can you see me?
Papa, can you find me in the night?
Papa, are you near me?
Papa, can you hear me?
Papa, can you help me not be frightened?
Looking at the skies I seem to see a million eyes Which ones are yours?
Where are you now that yesterday has waved goodbye And closed its doors?
The night is so much darker The wind is so much colder The world I see is so much bigger now that I'm alone Papa, how I love you Papa, how I need you Papa, how I miss you kissing me You'll never know just how much I miss you Papa, can you hear me?
You'll never know just how much I care How much I care And if I tried And if I tried I still couldn't hide I still couldn't hide My love for you My love for you You oughta know You oughta know For haven't I told you so?
For haven't I told you so?
A million or more times A million or more times You went away and my heart Went with you Papa, can you hear me?
I speak your name in my every prayer If there is some other way To prove that I love you I swear I don't know how You'll never know if you don't know Now Papa, you'll never know If you don't know Now When I was making Yentl , I felt that my father was a guiding force.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) My protector, in so many ways, you know?
There were many times when he did come to my rescue.
One late afternoon, on the Irish Seas, we were filming the end of the movie.
There were 20-foot waves, 200 extras were seasick, and a helicopter was bobbing four feet above my head.
The playback system decides to go out.
My stand-in had to hold a boombox underneath the camera so I could have something to sing to.
We're at the end of the day, I've got to get the shot.
We're losing the light and there's nothing without the light.
So I just closed my eyes and I prayed to God and my father... to let the setting sun be enough light to illuminate this next song.
(PIECE OF THE SKY PLAYING) The more I live The more I live The more I learn The more I learn The more I learn The more I realize The less I know The less I know Each step I take Papa, I've a voice now Each step I take Each page I turn, Papa, I've a choice now Each page I turn Each mile I travel only means The more I have to go The more I have to go What's wrong with wanting more?
If you can fly, then soar If you can fly, then soar With all there is With all there is Why settle for Why settle for Just a piece of sky?
Just a piece of sky?
Papa, I can hear you Papa, I can hear you Papa, I can see you Papa, I can see you Papa, I can feel you Papa, I can feel you Papa Papa Watch me fly Watch me fly Papa, watch me fly Papa, watch me fly (AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) (DRUM ROLL) (APPLAUSE) (INAUDIBLE) MAN: Ladies and gentlemen, there will now be a 30-minute intermission.
(TRIUMPHANT MUSIC PLAYING) I loved how she went... She started from the beginning, her roots, and did all the songs that we all know and love.
And just amazing.
(LAUGHS) He was trying to get me to marry him.
So he bought me Barbra Streisand tickets.
(LAUGHS) MAN: Is it gonna work?
It did.
It did.
(LAUGHS) Well, it did work.
It did work.
We got married.
(ORCHESTRA PLAYING LIVELY MUSIC) It's a once-in-a-lifetime event.
It's the most fabulous thing I've ever seen in my life.
I've become a fan of Barbra's because my daughter.
I made this for Barbara in the 1994 concert, and I brought it back again to see her again for the second dream of a lifetime come true.
(UPBEAT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PLAYING) Oh!
Oh, it is so good!
And she's doing so much from her, like... Her old albums.
Like Miss Marmelstein.
Miss Marmelstein.
Lover Come Back to Me and everything.
Oh, it's so exciting.
It's a real kick hearing Barbra singing all these oldies like Second Hand Rose.
Papa Can You Hear Me?
makes me cry every single time I hear it.
Her voice goes through you.
It just goes through you.
Becomes part of who you are.
(ORCHESTRAL MUSIC PLAYING) (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) I came all the way from West Virginia.
From New York.
St.
Louis, Missouri.
Chicago, Illinois.
Massachusetts.
Akron, Ohio.
Kansas City, Missouri.
From Boston.
From Germany.
From Michigan.
Florida.
North Carolina.
Syracuse, New York.
Came for one night from Boston.
(ORCHESTRAL MUSIC CONTINUES) This is the biggest party in the world, the biggest night of the year.
And who better to host it than Barbra herself?
This was the only place I wanted to be this evening.
It's always been our dream to see Barbra together.
A chance of a lifetime.
This is like our dream come true.
Yeah.
And we never have to see another concert again.
Ever again.
Bit by bit Putting it together (AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) Piece by piece Only way to make a work of art Every moment makes a contribution Every little detail plays a part Having just the vision's no solution Everything depends on execution Putting it together That's what counts!
Ounce by ounce Putting it together Small amounts Adding up to make a work of art First of all, you need a good foundation Otherwise, it's risky from the start Takes a little cocktail conversation But without the proper preparation Having just the vision's no solution Everything depends on execution The art of making art Is putting it together bit by bit MAN: Do we really need all these musicians?
Link by link Making the connections BARBRA: Yes, we do.
Drink by drink Taking every comment as it comes Learning how to play the politician like you play piano, bass and drums Otherwise you'll find your composition isn't gonna get much exhibition Art isn't easy Every minor detail is a major decision Have to keep things in scale Have to hold to your vision MAN: Why don't we talk about this over dinner, darling?
What's a little cocktail conversation If it gets the funds for your foundation?
Every time I start to feel defensive I remember vinyl is expensive!
MAN: Would you agree to do an interview?
BARBRA: Maybe one.
Dot by dot Building up the image Shot by shot Keeping at a distance doesn't pay And if you remember your objective, not give all your privacy away A little bit of hype can be effective As long as you can keep it in perspective Even when you get some recognition Everything you do, you still audition Art isn't easy Overnight you're a trend You're the right combination Then the trend's at an end You're suddenly last year's sensation All they ever want is repetition All they really like is what they know Gotta keep a link with your tradition You gotta learn to trust your intuition While you reestablish your position So that you can be on exhibi-- (SIGHS) So that your work can be on exhibition "Be new, girl" They tell you till they're blue, girl You're new or else you're through, girl And even if it's true, girl You do what you can do Bit by bit Putting it together Piece by piece Working on the vision night and day All it takes is time and perseverance With a little luck along the way Putting in a personal appearance Gathering supporters and adherents PRODUCER 1: Well, she's an original.
PRODUCER 2: Was.
Mapping out the songs but in addition Harmonizing each negotiation Balancing the part that's all musicians With the part that's strictly presentation Balancing the money with the mission Till you have the perfect orchestration Even if you do have the suspicion That it's taking all your concentration The art of making art Is putting it together bit by bit Beat by beat, part by part Sheet by sheet Chart by chart Track by track, bit by bit Reel by reel, pout by pout Stack by stack Snit by snit Meal by meal Shout by shout Deal by deal Spat by spat Spiel by spiel Doubt by doubt And that is the state of the art (AUDIENCE CHEERS) Hello, again.
Thank you.
On a clear day (CHEERING CONTINUES) Rise and look around you And you'll see who you are On a clear day How it will astound you That the glow of your being Outshines every star You'll feel part of Every mountain, sea and shore You can hear from far and near A world you've never, never heard before And on the clear day On the clear day You can see forever And ever and ever And ever More (AUDIENCE CHEER AND APPLAUD) Thank you.
Oh, hi.
That's very nice.
Just what I needed.
You look very familiar to me.
Hmm?
Don't I know you?
We worked together.
Somewhere.
A long time ago?
No?
You play the piano or something?
No?
You'll never know if you don't know now I did play the Catskills once.
I did make it to the Catskills, yes.
(SIGHS) One of the joys of making The Broadway Album was working with Stephen Sondheim.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) And here's one of his most beautiful, beautiful songs.
(SEND IN THE CLOWNS PLAYING) Isn't it rich?
(AUDIENCE CHEERS) Aren't we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground You in mid-air Send in the clowns Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around One who can't move Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns Just when I'd stopped Opening doors Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours Making my entrance again with my usual flair Sure of my lines But no one is there (SIGHS) Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer?
Losing my timing this late In my career?
And where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns Don't bother They're here (AUDIENCE CHEERING) It's a nice song.
Beautiful melody.
Over the years, I've had the pleasure of recording many duets with some of the greatest performers of all time.
I sang my very first one with a true legend, someone who not only was a great artist, but a generous, loving... soul, person, being.
Happy days And just get happy BARBRA: She was wonderful to me.
Are here again You better chase All your blues away The skies above Are clear again Shout hallelujah So let's sing a song And just get happy Of cheer again BOTH: And we got nothing to be sorry for BARBRA: What a joy to work with him.
Our love is one in a million Eyes can see that we got a highway to the sky BARBRA AND BRYAN ADAMS: I finally found someone BARBRA: I like that song too.
Someone to share my life I finally found the one To be with every night BOTH: Tell him BARBRA: Yeah, she's a real sweetie pie.
Rise in his eyes Reach out to him You don't say you need me You don't sing me love songs BARBRA: My friend Neil.
BOTH: You don't bring me flowers BARBRA: We went to the same high school.
Anymore This next duet is perhaps my favorite.
I sang it quite early in my career.
It was never released, and it's kind of a low-budget basement recording.
Unplugged, you might say.
None of the musicians were famous.
Nevertheless, I think when you see it, you'll understand why it means so much to me.
You know what a duet is?
Mmm.
BARBRA: A duet is two people singing together.
Let's sing a duet.
BOY: Mm-hmm.
(BOY VOCALIZING) BARBRA: Sing (PIANO MUSIC PLAYING) Sing a song Sing a song (DRUMS PLAYING) Whoops.
Okay, okay.
Make it simple to last your whole life long Don't worry that it's not good enough BARBRA: You remember this, honey?
You don't remember, right?
(BARBRA LAUGHS) You were five, Jason.
BARBRA AND JASON: Sing a song With a whisk as a microphone.
Very imaginative.
Hey, Sadie, if you're gonna-- if you're gonna bark, bark in tempo.
(BARBRA AND BOYS LAUGHING) I've got a crush on you (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Sweetie pie All the day and night-time Hear me sigh The world will pardon my mush Cause I've got a crush My baby, on you (AUDIENCE CHEERING) BARBRA: I'm very proud of this next duet, too, which I recorded with the greatest singer of his time, who also had the bluest eyes.
I've got a crush on you Oh, Francis.
Sweetie pie My, my, my All the day and night-time I love the night-time Hear me sigh Ho-hum I never had the least notion The least notion That I could fall with I fall with So much emotion So much emotion Could you coo?
I could coo Could you care?
I could care For a lovely cottage Love that cottage That we could share BOTH: The world will pardon my mush But I have got a crush My baby, on you (BLOWS KISS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Yeah, he was really something.
Now you see this screen coming in and out, doing all this complicated stuff here?
It literally got more rehearsal than I did.
A lot more.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Everything on the set is automated.
You know, they use, um, hydraulics.
It's-- it's really scary.
And they say that you can make things appear or disappear with a clicker.
Like, I can make this, um... Let me see which one.
I can make this... Is this it?
Uh-oh.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) I don't know.
I forgot which one it was already.
My-- Okay.
Maybe it's this one.
I don't know.
No, it's not that one.
Wait.
Okay.
Um... I can make the screen just disap-- disappear.
Okay?
Watch this.
No, no, no, no.
That's the wrong clicker.
No, not the chair.
Chair-- I need my chair back.
Bring the chair back.
Come on.
Bring the chair back.
Barbra, stand up tall and stop fidgeting.
Ma?
I brought you a nice sandwich.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) I don't want a-- a sandwich.
I'm not hungry.
You look too thin.
I'm not too thin.
All right.
It's a nice chicken salad sandwich.
All right, maybe later.
I need a mother clicker here.
You know, you promised me a nice seat in the orchestra, but this is ridiculous.
Where's the mute button?
Marvin, maybe you want a half a sandwich?
I don't know.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Seriously.
It is so technically overwhelming.
It reminds me of my house.
You remember the good old days?
BC?
Before clickers?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) When you had to get up to change the channel?
When you could turn up the volume with a knob?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Do you remember knobs?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Do you remember Channel 4?
Do you remember when it was just two, four, five, seven, nine, 11 and 13?
Do you remember?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Channel 2 was Ed Sullivan.
Channel 4 was Milton Berle.
That was it.
They were there.
They were always there.
You could count on them, you know.
Then there's 24-hour news shows.
How did information get around in the old days?
I mean, the really old days, you know, about the most powerful people in the world, like Buddha, Jesus, Moses.
I mean, these are big names.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) I mean, what did they do before CNN?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) It was word of mouth before technology.
Remember when online was where you hung the wash And a megabyte was a really big nosh?
And if it was a virus you got You went to the doctor and got a shot Ooh.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Internet or interface?
Download, upload, database Pixel, shmixel, cyberspeak They may as well be speaking Greek Once, a floppy disk meant you had a bum back A hack drove a cab and a burger was a Mac Modems, chat room DOS and DATs A mouse in your pad?
That's why we had cats (AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Nowadays, you need a degree from MIT To operate your own TV I used to find a channel quicker When all you needed was one clicker Listen, I don't mean to bicker But now my clicker has a clicker And each new clicker makes me sicker If I could only find a clicker to turn all the clickers off (MUSIC STOPS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Isn't this nice?
Peaceful.
Quiet.

That was fun.
They liked it, huh?
The '70s.
My God.
Disco.
As the saying goes, "If you stick around long enough, everything old is new again."
It's back, right?
And where has the time gone?
The '70s.
Where-- Where has time gone?
Oh, there you are.
Just in the nick of.
Um, listen, I want to take a little break.
Just a few minutes.
Do you think you could, like, take some time for yourself?
Maybe do a little time step or something?
Okay?
Okay, great.
I'll be right back.
(UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) Bye.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (MUSIC STOPS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) (MUSIC STOPS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) BARBRA: That was good.
(MUSIC STOPS) Time gave you a good time.
Yes.
I thought that since the century is about to change, I would too, you know.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) (SIGHS) Okay.
Earlier I was, um... (SOFT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PLAYING) ...talking about my father's letter, which actually was a three-page poem.
But I never told you what it said.
In one verse, he wrote, "To you, I say that life is vain unless it raises you above.
"If you must know my inner thoughts, why hush, my dear.
"It's love."
He went on to say, "Get you some love.
"Just make it enough.
"And, my patient listener, did you get the lesson I told?"
And these words really did help change my priorities.
My father was telling me something that I needed to hear, that there's nothing more important in life than love.
And though I received his message more than 60 years after he wrote it, it was timeless.
And what followed were some remarkable changes.
I think I even made the... The Mirror Has Two Faces because it had a happy ending.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) It's true.
After Funny Girl , The Way We Were and The Prince of Tides, you know, it was time that the girl got the guy.
Right?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) And as some of you may already know, I did.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PLAYING) Hello, gorgeous.
(BARBRA LAUGHS) Yes, honey.
Are you embarrassed?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) (BLOWS KISS) This is a song I had written for our wedding day and based on a beautiful melody we heard in Ireland, huh?
I've dreamed of you Always feeling you Were there And all my life I have searched for you Everywhere I caught your smile in the morning sun I heard your whisper on the breeze at night I prayed one day That your arms Would hold me tight And just when I thought love had passed me by We met (AUDIENCE CHEERING) That first look In your eyes I can't forget You melted me With your tender touch I felt all fear and sorrow slip away Now here we stand Hand in hand This blessed day (AUDIENCE CHEERING) This is my wedding veil fabric, by the way.
For God must know How I love you so He's blessed us here today as man and wife Come dream with me As I've dreamed of you All my life Come dream with me As I have dreamed of you All my life (BLOWS KISS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (MUSIC STOPS) Thank you.
(BLOWS KISS) Thank you, honey.
(LAUGHS) It's nice, thank you.
Yeah.
There's an ancient saying that when a dove flaps its wings in China, speaking of which, this is very pretty.
The wind currents shift for thousands of miles across mountains and seas.
It's just a poetic way of saying that everything we do has a ripple effect and that we're all interconnected and have a responsibility to look out for one another and future generations, don't we?
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Yeah.
Think about it.
(AT THE SAME TIME PLAYING) Think of all the hearts Beating in the world At the same time Think of all the faces And the stories they could tell At the same time Think of all the eyes looking out into this world Trying to make some sense of what we see Think of all the ways we have of seeing Think of all the ways there are of being Think of all the children Being born into this world At the same time At the same time Feel your love surround them Through the years they'll need to grow At the same time At the same time Just think of all the hands That will be reaching for a dream Think of all the dreams that could come true Yes, if the hands we're reaching with Could come together joining me and you When it comes to thinking of tomorrow We must protect our fragile destiny In this precious life, there's no time to borrow The time has come to be a family (VOCALIZING) Think of all the love pouring from our hearts At the same time At the same time Let's think of all the light Our love can shine around this word At the same time The same time Just think what we've been given And just think what we could lose All of life is in our trembling hands It's time to overcome our fears And join to build a world that loves and understands It helps to think of all the hearts Beating in the world And hope for all the hearts Beating in the world There's a healing music in our hearts Beating in this world At the same time At the same Time (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) (WHOOPS) That was pretty.
Yeah.
Pretty.
(CHUCKLES) Yeah.
Good words.
Now, at midnight, we're all going to sing Auld Lang Syne , right?
And I don't know about you, but I've always wondered what it meant.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) So I looked it up.
It was written in Old Scottish by a very famous poet, Robert Burns, and "auld lang syne" means time remembered with fondness.
And to me, it's a song about remembering people who've meant something to you in your life.
A mentor, a teacher, a friend from your childhood.
Should auld acquaintance Be forgot (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance Be forgot In the days Of Auld Lang Syne For Auld Lang Syne My dear For Auld Lang Syne And a little later in the song The most important words We'll take A cup of kindness yet For Auld Lang Syne (UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) What?
It's-- it's time?
It's getting closer, huh?
Mm-mm.
I need to wind it up?
Okay, well, I just want to say a couple more things.
Oh, about... Friend, pal, time.
I need a little extra.
Look, I realize this is a big night for you, so why don't you sit down, put your feet up, relax.
No?
Do the words "take five" mean anything to you?
Huh?
Or "coffee break"?
"Half-time"?
"Time out"?
No, no.
All right, all right.
You don't have to get so excited.
I saw you do this before.
So you can do it.
You can do it.
You could-- You could just give me a few more seconds?
Minutes?
(MUSIC STOPS) (SIGHS) Look at this.
What a picture.
Time standing still.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) All right.
Okay.
Okay.
I gotta talk fast again.
I'm on borrowed time here.
(SLOW INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PLAYING) As we thought about putting together tonight's show, this moment was of particular importance to me.
What song would I sing as the seconds ticked away, drawing us closer to this new adventure in history?
That's a lot of pressure to put on one song.
But after thinking about it for a while, I realized that the song was there all along, and I've been singing it for many years.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Smarty.
(CHUCKLES) A song that always, and tonight especially, says it all.
(PEOPLE PLAYING) People (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) People who need people Are the luckiest people In the world We're children Needing other children And yet letting our grown-up pride Hide all the need inside Acting more like children Than children Lovers Are very special people They're the luckiest people In the world With one person One very special person A feeling deep in your soul Says you were half, now you're whole No more hunger and thirst First be a person who needs people People who need people Are the luckiest people In the world A feeling deep in your soul Says you were half, now you're whole No more hunger and thirst But first be a person who needs people People who need people Are the luckiest people In the World (MUSIC STOPS) (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) (BARBRA WHOOPS) Wasn't that choir pretty?
They're people.
Wasn't the choir-- Oh, my gosh!
Now, wait a minute.
One minute and 48 seconds left to the new year.
It's happening.
Is everybody ready for this?
Yes?
Honey?
Honey, you want to come up?
I want you to be with me when-- when the clock strikes 12:00.
My husband, ladies and gentlemen.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) (SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY) Ladies and gentlemen, now I'd like to introduce the master of rhythm and the man of the hour.
Brother Time, come and take us to the other side.
Oh, one minute and one second.
(UPBEAT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PLAYING) Fifty-six seconds.
Fifty five-- Four.
Fifty-two.
Fifty.
Forty-eight.
Forty-six, 44.
Forty-two.
Forty.
Yeah.
Thirty-six.
Thirty-four.
Thirty-two.
Thirty.
Twenty-eight, 26.
Twenty-four, 22.
Twenty.
Eighteen, 16.
Oh, 14, 12.
BARBRA AND CROWD: Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two one.
Happy New Year!
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (MOUTHING) I love you.
CHOIR: Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot In the days of Auld Lang Syne For Auld Lang Syne, my dear For Auld Lang Syne We'll take a cup of kindness yet For Auld Lang Syne For Auld Lang Syne, my dear For Auld Lang Syne We'll take a cup of kindness yet For Auld Lang Syne (UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (BARBRA WHOOPS) BARBRA: You can go off now.
CHOIR: Are the luckiest people In the world (MUSIC STOPS) BARBRA: Yes!
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (BARBRA CHUCKLES) I wanted everything to be the best for you tonight, so... please help me thank the very best cast.
Randee Heller and Alec Ledd.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Our beautiful choir.
Our tireless crew worked very hard.
Our wonderful background singers Peggi, Kellie and Bridgette.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Our youngest discovery, the glorious-voiced, gorgeous Lauren Frost, who plays mini me.
(CHUCKLES) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) And our brilliant timekeeper, musician and dancer extraordinaire, Savion Glover.
Beautiful.
I'd also like to thank the distinguished members of the orchestra.
Please stand.
Aren't they wonderful?
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
And, of course, finally, my Pulitzer Prize-winning conductor and dear friend, Marvin.
Marvin Hamlisch.
(MOUTHING) Thank you.
Happy New Year, honey.
Oh, and many thanks to my special musicians.
Randy, JR, Neil, Dean, Ralph and Gayle.
2000.
2000.
Get used to that, right?
Whew!
But tonight we have crossed centuries together, and so I'd like to sing a song in honor of my oldest, dearest and newest friends.
Friends who stand the test of time Friends who make the best of time The friends you know Will be near Each and every year Every time you hear Auld Lang Syne When you arrived, you did get-- You've been using them all night.
These flashlight things, just in case, you know, the lights went out.
But we're okay, right?
Everything's fine.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) (LAUGHS) And it's nice to use them now anyway, as a-- as a-- a way to bask in the light of a new day, you know?
I'd like my first duet of this new year to be with you.
13,000 people, okay?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) So you sing Auld Lang Syne and I'm going to sing a counter melody that I'm dedicating to all of you.
Okay?
Girls.
Time Should auld acquaintance Be forgot Is forever passing by And never brought to mind?
An ever-restless friend Should auld acquaintance Moving on Be forgot Just like the friends And days of Auld Lang Syne?
Who through the years will walk beside you Friends who stand the test of time For Auld Lang Syne Friends to make the best of time For Auld... The friends you know Auld Lang Syne Will be near We'll take a cup Each and every year Every time you hear Of kindness yet For Auld Lang Syne Auld Lang... You are singing pretty, that's great!
Yes, love that stands the test of time For Auld Lang Syne Love that makes the best of time For Auld Lang Syne The love you know will be near We'll drink a cup Yes, each and every year Every time you hear Of kindness yet For Auld Lang Syne Auld Lang Syne We'll drink a cup Of kindness yet For Auld Lang Syne (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Happy New Year, everybody!
(MUSIC STOPS) (LAUGHS) MAN: Happy New Year!
Thank you.
To you, too.
Healthy, Happy New Year.
I've thanked everybody in my show, but... I also want to thank you all for being brave enough to come out on New Year's Eve.
And I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, not just for being here tonight, but for being there for me time after time after time.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Thank you.
Thank you.
WOMAN: (YELLS) I love you, Barbra!
Thank you.
I'm getting verklempt.
This next song also seems apropos to the occasion.
(HAPPY DAYS PLAYING) Do you recognize that?
It's a different intro.
It's from 1962.
The Garry Moore Show.
Happy days Are here again The skies above Are clear again So let's sing a song of cheer again Happy days are here again All together Shout it now There's no one Who can doubt it now So let's tell the world About it now Happy days are here again Your cares and troubles are gone There'll be no more from now on From now on Oh, happy days Are here again The skies above Are so clear again So let's sing A song of cheer again Happy times Happy times Happy nights Happy nights Happy Days Days Are Are Here Here Again Happy days are here again (BARBRA WHOOPS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) BARBRA: Thank you!
(BARBRA WHOOPS) Thank you.
Thank you.
(DON'T LIKE GOODBYES PLAYING) It's not easy It's never been easy To let anyone see The sentimental side of me Hard as I try, I can't help but show It's my heart you're taking When you go Don't like goodbyes Tears or sighs I'm not too good At leaving time I've got no taste for grieving time Oh, no, no, no, not me When it's farewell time Why can't I tell time?
Please take your time Don't go so fast Slow down and make the moments last As long as can be What can I say to you as a... a parting thought?
In this first hour of the first morning of the first day of a new year, a new decade, a new century, a new millennium.
We all want to change the world into a better place, but that's an overwhelming task.
I think all we can really change is ourselves, a little bit at a time.
Because that's the only thing we have control over.
And as we change ourselves inside, I believe we can change the world.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) I believe for every drop Of rain that falls A flower grows And I believe that somewhere In the darkest night A candle glows I believe for everyone Who goes astray Someone will come To show the way I believe I believe I believe above the storm The smallest prayer Will still be heard And I believe that someone In the great somewhere Hears every word Every time I hear A newborn baby cry Or touch a leaf Or see the sky Then I know why I believe There's a place For us (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Somewhere a place for us Peace and quiet and open air Waits for us somewhere There's a time for us Someday there'll be a time for us Time together with time to spare Time to learn and a time to care Someday Somewhere We'll find a new way of living We'll find a way of forgiving Somewhere Somewhere There's a place for us A time and place for us Hold my hand and I'll take you there Hold my hand and we're halfway there Somehow Someday Somewhere There's a place for us A time and a place for us Hold my hand and we're halfway there Hold my hand and I'll take you there Somehow Someday Somewhere (MUSIC STOPS) (AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PLAYING) Happy New Year, everybody!
