GUEST: This is an artillery shell from Great-Uncle Fred.

He served in World War I in the Army.

It appears to be an artillery shell that's been picked up and turned into art.

APPRAISER: Shell art is something that we really see coming into its own in World War I.

There wasn't a whole lot of extra ammunition at the beginning of the war, but towards the end of the war, there was plenty.

And so there are empty shell casings all over the place.

They got turned into souvenirs for the soldiers, either by the soldiers themselves or by enterprising French and Belgian civilians that would make them to market them to the soldiers as souvenirs.

This one is German.

Most of these things tend to be in the $50 to $150 range.

This one is so special, though, because it's big, and then the content is just everything that you could hope to get.

I would put this at $1,200 to $1,500.
