Appraisal: Kawase Hasui Japanese Woodblock Prints, ca. 1922
GUEST: We found them in 1988 at an estate sale in Washington, D.C. APPRAISER: Do you remember what you paid for them?
GUEST: My guess is it wasn't over ten dollars.
APPRAISER: These are both original Japanese woodblock prints.
It was likely around six or seven cherry woodblocks that were carved out by hand to make this print.
They have the publisher seal of Hasui Kawase.
That one, over there, Higo Prefecture, it's an onsen, and he was known as the Master of Rain.
That was produced in 1922.
This one, this is Lake Izu.
This one was produced 1923.
Most that we see, 1930s, 1940s, this is early on.
They are in fantastic condition.
I saw these selling at auction regularly for between $3,000 and $4,000 each.
GUEST: Oh wow.
It's not a bad, uh, appreciation.
(chuckles)
