Appraisal: Tlingit Bottle & Hupa Basket, ca. 1900
GUEST
My mother decided that she should have a collection of Indian baskets, and she started maybe when she was 30. She grew up in Walla Walla in kind of a cowboy family and was really enamored, so she collected them over time, and I inherited them.

Well, your mother had very good taste. These are both wonderful baskets. This one is a Native American Tlingit from southeastern Alaska. And, as you can see, the basket is woven over a bottle. The one problem is that the lid is missing, which does devalue the basket a little bit. But in this condition, it's beautiful, it's very fine. I would value this basket at about $850. Now, this basket is a Hupa from Northwest California. Very bold, very wonderful, circa 1900, and it was made probably to be sold to tourists, but still early. And I would value this basket at about $1,500 to $2,000.

Great.

But both very, very nice.
GUEST
Well, I'll look around and maybe I can find the top to it somewhere.
APPRAISER
Oh, that would even be better, that would be better because then, with the lid, you're talking about $2,000.
GUEST
Wow, great.
APPRAISER
It does add quite a bit.
