Appraisal: Phoenix Furniture Co. Dresser
GUEST
This dresser was given to my great-great-grandmother by my great-great-grandfather when they were married in 1858. And my great-great-grandfather was Jonathan Browning, the pioneer gunsmith in Tennessee and Nauvoo, Illinois, that came across the plains with the Mormon pioneers. His sons from his plural marriages started the Browning Arms company.
APPRAISER
If we open up this drawer, we can see the construction on this joining-- not dovetailed, but rather doweled. This is a signature that's been attributed to the firm of Phoenix Furniture Company out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. All furniture firms in Grand Rapids generally used this dowel, but the scalloped motif here on the front is associated with Phoenix Furniture. Sometimes furniture is exciting and tells this great story but doesn't have a great deal of value. We're probably looking at around $1,000.
