Appraisal: Folk Art Sword, ca. 1890

This was a gift presented to my dad when he was ten years old from a gentleman whose father had received it from the Gloucester Fire Department. It's a swordfish. This is his swordfish's sword.

It's a presentation sword from the fire department and done, as you said, from a swordfish bill, hence the reason for the large swordfish in the center. Nice decoration. It has an absolutely incredible fire department scene down here, where you see the pull fire engine, the two firemen, the scene in the background-- the city scene-- the firemen's hat, the ladders and the axes. Then, on top of everything else, it's got the American eagle. You've got the American flag, you've got the American shield. It's absolutely incredible. And to top it all off, you've got this wonderful carved wooden handle carved in the shape of two fish going around in a circle with a rope twist in between. And I believe that if this was to come up to auction, this would probably bring somewhere in the $2,000 to $3,000 range.
