LET ME JUST START BY ASKING YOU, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO HAVE THIS HUGE RETROSPECTIVE, PANDEMIC NOT FULLY OPEN. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU? >> IT'S AN IMMENSE HONOR TO HAVE THIS REALLY -- WHEN I FIRST CAME TO NEW YORK, VERY YOUNG ARTIST, I SAW SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SHOWS THAT ARE SUPER -- REALLY INSTRUCTIVE AND OTHERS AREN'T. SO BOTH OF THOSE EXHIBITIONS WERE SO IMPORTANT TO ME TO BE IN AND TO BE NOW IN THAT INSTITUTION WITH SUCH A -- 25 YEARS OF WORK, IT'S JUST BEEN AN IMMENSE HONOR. WE DON'T HAVE THE TOUR SAWS THAT YOU NORMALLY HAVE IN NEW YORK. THERE'S OPPORTUNITY THAT I CAN FOCUS ON. WHAT IS LOCALIZED HERE IN THE GREATER NEW YORK AREA. HOW CAN WE GET TO THE OFFICE IN THE SUPER MIN. INSPIRING, CONNECTING WITH YOUNG ARTISTS AND INSPIRING ARTISTS THROUGHOUT HERE. THAT'S THE FOCUS, I THINK. >> SO I WAS FORTUNATE TO GO TO THE WHITNEY WHICH IS REALLY A DRAMATIC EXPERIENCE. IT'S VERY HEAVY TOPIC IN THE WAY IT IGNITES. YOU DO THE SYRIAN WAR, YOU DO REVOLUTION, THE ARAB SPRING, RACISM, SOME OF THE BLACK LIVES MATTER. MIKE GRACE. ALL OF THAT. WHEN YOU STAND BACK YOU SEE ONE THING. WHEN YOU MOVE FORWARD, YOU SEE COMPLETELY SOMETHING DIFFERENT. DESCRIBE TO US HOW YOU CONSTRUCT THOSE LAYERS UPON LAYERS. >> PART OF THE INTEREST IN THE SCALE OF THE WORK IS YOU HAVE THIS PERSONAL ENGAGEMENT THAT CHANGES AS YOU DESCRIBED. WHEN YOU GET CLOSER TO THE WORK, THE ENTIRE PICTURE FRACTURES INTO ALL OF THESE LITTLE ELEMENTS AND YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL THROUGH A LOT OF THE CARD EXPERIENCE. WHEN YOU PULL OUT TO WORK, YOU GET AN IDEA WHAT THE IMAGES CHANGE. THE WORK CHANGES WHICH IS, I THINK, PARALLEL TO HOW WE TRY TO LOCATE WHO WE ARE IN THIS WORLD.
