Hey, thank you, everybody, so much. We're called Brett Newski and the No Tomorrow. We're from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but I lived in Madison for five years. I actually had communications class in this very room 11 years ago. And I got a B minus in communications, the path of least resistance.

But made it very far, thanks for having us. I remember watching this show in my collegiate dorm room in Sellery Hall when I was 18 so it's cool. We've come far, you know? We got Spatola over here on the drum set. Give it up for Spatola.

All right, so this song, is anyone familiar with Steel Bridge Song Festival in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin? Yeah, cool. So it's a really amazing one of a kind festival that's in this '50s Holiday Motel where all the rooms shut down every June and people just write songs. There's like 50 songwriters that write songs and then they create all the songs that week and write them on the weekend, perform them on the weekend. So this is a song I wrote with Pat McDonald, who co-founded the festival. If you don't know Pat McDonald, he's kind of a Wisconsin legend. He was in a band called Tim Buck Three. He named the show. - Oh, he named the show? Pat McDonald named this show 30-Minute Music Hour? Dang! So Pat McDonald tribute right now. If you don't know Pat McDonald, he had a big hit song called, "Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades." Yeah, great man. So this is called, "Last Dance," let's try that. I'll do an eight-count and then we'll smash into it. One two three four One two three four

It's pretty hard to not look out the eyeballs From the back of my head You're gonna try and try and try To forget the angry hearts But that's just how it is La da da da In trying to build New Amsterdam I'm just looking for a reason to exist In a world where everybody feels so small So insignificant Yeah! Cleaning up the mess from the battle is a waste When the war goes on forever Man nothing's gonna change The man who fights with desperation Never stands a chance 'Cause a dance with desperation is the last dance
discordant guitar
Announcer
Oh, all right Anyone can tell you I'm an animal But I'll never be your dog So walk around the world without an accomplice Yeah without a God la da da da They're trying to build the ark I just really wanna learn how to swim Through a sea of plastic bottles All the refuse the mess we're in Cleaning up the mess from the battle is a waste When the war goes on forever Man nothing's gonna change The man who fights with desperation Never stands a chance 'Cause a dance with desperation is the last dance The dance with desperation is the last dance All right Whoo!

Thanks, everybody. This next tune, it's called "Ride." It's just kind of a song about sticking to your guns and going with your guts. I feel like I never really trusted my guts up until a year and a half ago. But, you know, once you get enough years under your belt you gotta go with your guts. And this is on an album called Life Upside Down and it's available in the hallway... only on VHS. Here we go. Do do do do do do One two Do do do do do do do do Do do do do do do Do do do do do Do do do do Do do do do do do do do Do do do do do Do do do do do Do do do do We could take it slowly Or we could get insane No one ever got anywhere By playing it safe If I was a God-fearin' man I'd say a prayer for you Before you drink the poison wine Before you eat the poison fruit I'm gonna take you for a ride I, I, I, I Before they take you for a ride I, I, I, I, I'm gonna take you for a ride I, I, I, I, I All the money in Monaco Couldn't buy me out Well I hope we get fired And we can walk the world around If it's snowing in Texas If you get out of this place Yeah baby buy some lottery Before your luck fades away I'm gonna take you for a ride I, I, I, I Before they take you for a ride I, I, I, I, I I'm gonna take you for a ride I, I, I, I, I Oh

This is called "So Long." Been counting sheep for a living Waiting around the phone Holding my breath to my consciousness Family leaves me alone I pace around the corner store Hiding from January The goodbyes are bad The comfort is dead This part always stings real good So long So long Are two words I'll forever choke on So long

Erase the X's Erase the O's I'm sick of the tic-tac-toe And all of this hard stuff feels so tack Like the crap in the Dollar Store So keep my tab open for the infinite winter Shallow's still at your heart And swallow the snow I'd build up the road To get back where we left off But for now So long So long Are two words I'll forever choke on So long Still all the salt And all of the Dead Sea On the blisters on my feet All of Singapore's money All of Paris' beauty All the drinks in Mil-wau-kee And all of the doubts about heaven or hell Now all the miles on the '73' Couldn't take you away from me But for now So long So long Are two words I'll forever choke on So long

Cool, good job man. I liked what you did there, but I kinda like when you, instead of the snare going like "pah!" I like when you go like "pooh pooh." Like "pooh."
soft snare music
Matt Spatola
Yeah, I think it suits the song better. It suits the song better when you hit it like" pooh" instead of like "pah pah pooh." How about this?
plays drum
Matt Spatola
No? - No. Like a "pooh pooh."
soft snare drum music
Matt Spatola
Yeah, I mean it's kind of slacking a bit. It's behind the time. Show me how to do it. - And I keep telling you this. I brought two snares. Tell me. - Kind of like, get some of the rim shot in there. See what I mean? It's different. It's like,

"Grow Your Garden"
Matt Spatola
La da da da da da La da da da da da da If I was inside the door Of a payphone that don't work no more I'd disconnect the dialtone The soundtrack of being alone 'Cause wandering don't keep you strong It works in spurts but not for long Your roots they need some lovin' on The soul can be a desert Only you can grow your garden Only you can grow your garden And if I was a lightning strike I'd climb down every key and kite Until I found some solid ground To plant a brand new life around If I was the dirt beneath The sneakers on your soulless feet I'd nudge you from the mirage So you could see the water Only you can grow your garden Only you can grow your garden Yeah, only you can grow your garden Only you can grow your garden La da da da da da da da do do do do do La da da da da da da da do do do do do

Matt Spatola
If I was a raging tide I'd have nothing to hide inside And that don't get me anywhere But bludgeoned by the air up there But if I was on the safety raft That pulled you from the aftermath I give your sleepy cheek a smack So you could see the future Only you can grow your garden Only you can grow your garden Yeah only you can grow your garden Only you can grow your garden

We got time for one more tune I think, yeah? Sweet. What do you want to do, Spatola? Any requests? "Effervescent." Hey, if the people sing, will that translate to the airwaves? One way to find out. Will people be able to hear it? But if we tell people to sing and they sing loud and it doesn't come through on the mics we'll look like total chumps. You know? Okay. Well, that'll be good, it'll be good TV. Good for you. All right, this is called "Effervescent." Let me do a quick tune on that G and that D. Does anyone have any heckles they would like to yell while we tune up? I think it's gotta-- - I quit! Spotal quits again?
soft drum music
Matt Spatola
Play that Bon Jovi beat that you like.

Matt Spatola
Yeah, that's right. They have to pay now for that 'cause you did that. God. All right, "Effervescent." One, two, three, one, two, three.
"Effervescent"
Matt Spatola
Yeah Woke up on High Street Feeling as low as I could be Are you a memory Is there a prayer for you and me All right Effervescent You're my only When will you believe There's no other to discover Not you then nobody Nobody Walked down the avenue Desperate for somewhere I could sleep Found me a lonely room Account is for some real bad dreams You and me Effervescent you're my only When will you believe There's no other to discover Not you then nobody Nobody Whoo Used to be different used to be fun Used to feel like there was no one but us How did it go So far off track I'm begging for you to take me back Take me back All right, this is the end, people. Now it's a teamwork part. You don't even have to sing it in English. Actually, I'm gonna go out on a limb here but we got two minutes and 40 seconds. What if-- Rucker, what if you came up here? Baxter, what if you got up here? Just some people on the couches to get around the mic and I think it'll sound better than if it's just in a warehouse. What about you guys? Can you join up, no, come on, come on. We need at least three more people. Andy Moore? We need at least one gal up here to neutralize the beef. Here we go. This'll be great. So here's the part. Yeah, cuddle up, cuddle up a little more. But make a wedge around the mic and then the part is this. La da da da da da da da da da da That's the part, ready? La da da da da da da da da da da That's the part. Keep her going. La da da da da da da da da da da Last one and then crowd surf back. La da da da da da da da da da da Thank you guys. Effervescent you're my only When will you believe There's no other to discover Not you then nobody Effervescent you're my only When will you believe There's no other to discover Not you then nobody Nobody Go Thanks, everybody, that's it for us!
