Whitney Mann

Willie Nelson knew exactly what to do when he heard Madison-based country singer Whitney Mann's recordings. He booked her to open two of his recent Wisconsin performances. Easily among the midwest's most talented female singer/songwriters, Mann appears on the 30-MMH with her full band, featuring some of the best alt-country players north of Nashville.

That's right. - Whitney Mann, everybody. "The Fool I've Been." Thank you so much for coming on the 30 Minute Music Hour. - Thanks for having us. Will you tell us who the rest of us is? Sure, over here on bass guitar is Kyle Jacobson. And behind us who has dashed off real quick-- Phantom drummer. - Is Adam Cargin. And next to him is Allen Cote. And next to him is Shawn Drake. You had an opportunity this winter to play for Willie Nelson, open up for him in La Crosse. How did that come about? - That came about where we sort of figured out who the promoter of the show was. And you know, Willie Nelson is and was a hero, since I was five. So, I found out who the promoter was, and just sent him an email. And then, he got back to us right away and asked to hear some of the music. We sent that to him. And then, he, fortunately enough, liked it. And so then, he sent that to Willie's manager. And he also liked it. So, that's how it happened. They got back, and what was your reaction when they said we need you to play in La Crosse for Willie Nelson? I don't know. I guess it was complete disbelief. "We're busy." - Yeah, right. It was complete disbelief until the moment that I got off the stage after playing for Willie. Were you nervous? - No, I wasn't nervous at all. I was sort of void of emotion, which was really weird, because I tend to feel something before a show. Were you nervous in the days leading up to it? Was it on your mind all the time? No, I think maybe that's why I wasn't nervous, because I tried not to think about it at all. So, when you look back on the night you played in front of Willie Nelson, do you think of it with ambivalence? No, not at all! It's like one of those events in your life where you're not sure how it happened, and it happened. And then when you think back on it, you're like, wow, that really shouldn't have happened at all. But it did. And I mean, I don't know, not many things in my life will surpass that. Think of all the country stars that would've loved to have shared the bill that night with him. Congratulations. Great stuff. And we'll get to hear three or four new songs, depending on how much time we have left. We have one 20-second piece of family business I want to do, if I can find the right camera. I can't see any tallies. Here's camera two. And you'll excuse me for doing this, won't you? - Sure. We have some people tonight, camera three, who are telling me where to look. I just want to recognize a couple people who are making their last rounds of 30 Minute Music Hours with us. Steve and Shirwil Lukes. Steve is our lighting director. Shirwil is our set designer. If you've enjoyed the visuals of what you've seen on Wisconsin Public Television for many years, it's due to their skills, great effort and devotion to the craft. They're retiring. They're a married couple. They're still together after working together, living together, lighting together, set designing together. We're going to miss them very, very much. And so, I'm taking the liberty of devoting these next few songs to Steve and Shirwil, so thank you. And thank you, Whitney. - Thanks. This song is my favorite song for the EP that we have out. The EP is called "The Way Back Home." This song is called "Call the Cops." CALL THE COPS CALL YOUR MOM CALL YOUR FRIENDS CALL THEM ALL TELL THEM I'M DONE TRYING TO MAKE YOU SMILE SAY I'M SORRY SO SAD BUT SOMETIMES THE GOOD TIMES BAIL BUT IN A SHORT WHILE IT WILL ALL TURN BACK AROUND SO LIGHT UP A MATCH AND IGNITE YOUR MEMORIES TILL EVERY ONE OF ME TURNS TO ASH THEN DRAW YOURSELF A BATH AND WASH YOURSELF OF THE PAST AND BE ASSURED THAT I WILL DO THE SAME SO DRAW YOURSELF A BATH AND WASH YOURSELF OF THE PAST AND BE ASSURED THAT I WILL DO THE SAME ( vocalizing ) ( vocalizing ) I'm going to welcome Kyle Jacobson back to the set. This is a new song, brand new. It's called "Born to Love You." I WAS BORN TO SING THE BLUES I WAS BORN TO LOVE YOU AND ALL THROUGH THE NIGHTTIME ALL THROUGH THE DAY I'LL BE YOUR WOMAN AS LONG AS YOU STAY STAY WITH ME (vocalizing) I WAS BORN TO SING THE BLUES I WAS BORN TO LOVE YOU AND ALL THROUGH THE NIGHTTIME ALL THROUGH THE DAY I'LL BE YOUR WOMAN AS LONG AS YOU STAY STAY WITH ME Okay. Yeah? One more, okay. ( inaudible ) Yeah. So, I do this thing, um, the third Wednesday of every month at the Alchemy, which is on Atwood, in Madison.
And it's from 10
00 to midnight, the third Wednesday of every month. And what it is, is it's called "By Request with Whitney," so you would email me at [email protected] and you know, any cover song that you would like to hear, or any of my own songs that you would like to play, email me, and then I will play them the following month. It's a great time. I have fun. It seems that everybody who comes out has fun. That's what it's all about. So, it's [email protected] Come out and check it out. This song is brand new. It's called "Home," and really, I feel like it's the most autobiographical song that I've written. And it goes like this. WELL, OH MY, HONEY YOU ARE SO PRETTY LET'S MOVE OUT OF THIS CITY I WILL START A LITTLE FARM AND WE'LL HAVE TWO KIDS AND WE'LL NAME THEM JACK AND JILL THEY'LL BOTH RUN UP THE HILL TO SCHOOL BOTH WAYS AND AT NIGHT ROUND THE TABLE WE WILL SIT AND ON ICED TEA WE'LL SIP AS WE TALK ABOUT OUR DAYS AND OH-OH-OH-OH-OH IT'LL BE ALL RIGHT AND OH-OH-OH-OH WE'LL BE JUST FINE 'CAUSE NOTHING FEELS AS RIGHT AS HOME SO COME ON, DARLING AND PUT YOUR HAND IN MINE WE'LL DANCE AWAY IN TIME INTO THE NIGHT AND WHEN THOSE STORMS COME AND WE BOTH KNOW THEY WILL WELL, I'LL BE HERE STILL LOVING YOU AND OH-OH-OH-OH-OH IT'LL BE ALL RIGHT AND OH-OH-OH-OH WE'LL BE JUST FINE 'CAUSE NOTHING FEELS AS RIGHT AS HOME AND OH-OH-OH-OH IT'LL BE ALL RIGHT AND OH-OH-OH-OH WE'LL BE JUST FINE 'CAUSE NOTHING FEELS AS RIGHT AS HOME 'CAUSE NOTHING FEELS AS RIGHT AS HOME (applause) Thank you very much.
