30-MMH has featured several acts that soon broke out to national and international audiences. PHOX, a vocal-centric pop band from Madison, is surely one. Daytrotter, the premier website for American indie music, named "Evil," a track from the band's gorgeous debut album their #9 song of 2011. Here’s how the site praised them: “Extraordinary...nuanced, spectacularly arranged and interesting songs"

That box head is hot, isn't it Matt? - Yeah. It looks like it's hot. - It gets warm up here. Matt Holmen, and this is PHOX. Friendship is the name of the release, where 19 tracks are available. Well, some of them are, like, puny, funny, like seven-second things, right? They're very serious monologues. That's part of the Friendship deal, I suppose. Give us a quick introduction. Well, friendship, you don't just get the gold nuggets. You don't just get to go up to someone and get a good piece of wisdom every day. Or, a good pat on the back. Sometimes you get a little backhand or a little BS, you know, in your ear. That's what we're giving. We're trying to give you the whole picture. Well, you can see it even when we're here live. Between songs I think the audience was like, Hey! We're over here! Hey, wait! Guys! There's how you get both sides of the coin. It's real. It's actually happening. Introduce us to your friends. - Of course. This is Monica. I call her Crumb. We've got Trow over here. J Sean, J Sean de Rulo. Dave, his name's Dave. Che, Che Daddy. And of course we've got Ziggin' Zach back here. PHOX collectively is from Baraboo, Wisconsin, correct? - Indeed. Everyone grew up in Baraboo? - Yeah. And everybody graduated from Baraboo High School? Uh-huh, Well, we all attended Baraboo High School. (laughter) I mean, you know, leave it at that. (laughter) Then you migrated to Madison, and further challenging the believe system, you all moved into the same house? - That's correct. How'd that go? -
laughter
It's pretty nice. I really like it. It's a dark place at times, but there's good food to be had, good company. It's nice. The family that eats together, stays together. What's typical night? Lots of us, you know, go home from work and boil a pasta and watch a rerun of Shameless and call it a night. What's a typical night at the PHOX house? I think we end up spending the first part of the day hating ourselves by eating horrible food and watching terrifying television. Or maybe that's me. I don't know. It that a normal day? - Okay, so I'm projecting here. (laughter) No, we eat a lot. Come on now, I'm not the only one that complains about their diet. We eat a lot of cheese. It becomes really dark sometimes. We get into a comatose place. What it sounds like, next to the kitchen, although maybe not physically, but in popularity, there's the wood room. - Yes. And that has got a lot of people in this part of the state talking. What happens in the wood room? I don't know, something special. I think basically what happens is that you're forced to play without all of this stuff that's kind of, like, up in your face, that makes you sound a certain way. I always had a big problem going to see a show, a guy picks up his acoustic guitar, plugs it in, and when it's coming out of the PA, it sounds like your ear, it's, like, inside of the guitar. That's not how you listen to a guitar. You listen to it from a room, and it sounds kind of small and puny sometimes. I love that. I've always enjoyed the way that things actually, naturally sound. I think that room gives you the opportunity to hear what an ear would hear just standing in the center of the room. We usually just do one mic, or maybe so additional bass miking. I don't know, I guess there's a big mirror, so people have to really look at themselves in the face. Listen and look. So, there's some honesty there. Yeah, very frightening. That dynamic has created an environment for some new music, too. Tell us about the next song. I'm going to leave. You tell us, as I walk away, about the brand-new song. Yeah, that's right. - Thanks, PHOX. - Thank you. Yes, this is a new song. It's still being written. Well, they're all still being written. They're all still being written. Right now, it's called "Nobel Heart," and it might sound different next time you hear it. It almost certainly will. - It probably will. (chatter) And there it was. That's it! Thanks for listening to PHOX. DID THEY ALREADY TELL YOU I'M A LOW LEVEL POISON? TO DRINK THROUGH I'D LIKE TO PROVE THEM WRONG BUT PATTERNS SHOW THEY'RE TELLING THE TRUTH YOURS IS A NOBLE HEART I DON'T DESERVE TO HOLD PLEASE SOMEBODY MAKE ME WEAK KEEP ME AWAY FROM THE SEA BUT SIRENS I SWEAR ARE THE DEATH OF ME I WANT THE MOUTHS OF ALL WHO SING YOURS IS A NOBLE HEART I DON'T DESERVE TO HOLD OH, THIS SCARLET LUST HAS GOT ITS CLAWS IN ME IT'S TAKEN OVER ME IT'S PROVING WHAT I CAN BE FOR ANY MAN AT ALL BUT IF YOU DECIDE THE TWO OF US MAY BE TOGETHER ENDLESSLY BLINDLY, OH BLISSFULLY I'LL WOULD FORGO THEM ALL OH MY DEAR, I'LL GLADLY FORGO THEM ALL (vocalizes)
