Rockford-based Miles Nielsen is a second-generation professional music maker. His father Rick Nielsen was a founding member of the seminal Rockford band Cheap Trick. Nielsen inherited his father’s gifts as a guitar player but, unlike his Dad, Miles is a powerful, emotive vocalist. His music is part rock, part folk and part gypsy wedding party.

It's nice to see you. Yeah, good to see you, too. Thanks for coming. Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, everybody, from Rockford, Illinois. Those last two are on the new EP, right? Yes, recorded in St. Louis over, we can say, drunken, on this stream. It was a wine-induced 20 hours of frantic recording. We went in with one song, and we came out with four, which was good. It kind of showed us that we could actually be a band. How did that work? Out of sheer need? Yeah, we didn't want to record songs twice that we had already put on the last record. So we decided that we should probably write a few songs. We only had one prepared. - Huh. A one song EP doesn't really do that well, I don't think. It helps if this configuration has been together for a while. You and Danny, I know, have been singing, not all the way back to high school, but for some time? Yeah, I could be his-- Well, I would have had to have him at a really young age. (Andy laughs) Yeah, we've been playing together for years. I think, I don't know, almost nine years, or something like that, in different configurations. And, we get along, for the most part, still. And Adam, too, we've been playing together. Dave's the newbie. He's from-- Well, poor him, he moved from San Diego to Rockford, so that was quite a shock. (Andy laughs) No one really chooses to do that. - To join The Rusted Hearts? Yeah, pretty much. - Terrific. Pretty much? (laughter) - Entirely. You're sitting tonight because you had a terrible basketball injury. Is that what happened? Basketball, yeah. I ruptured my Achilles tendon about seven weeks ago. I've got a nice scar and can't walk to prove it. Are you like in a city league or something? Yeah, more or less. It's pretty rough. Obviously. And I'm really fast and can jump really high. (all laugh) Three more songs from the high-flying Rusted Hearts. That's right. Well, this one's for you. It is? - Yeah, this is a song, 'cause I heard, from somewhere in the grapevine, that you're a colonel in Kentucky. That's correct, a Kentucky colonel. A Kentucky colonel, right here. This song doesn't really have anything to do with you, per se, but it really does, after meeting you. I can tell that you love whiskey and smoke a lot. (laughter) Pick one. This is a song called, "Dear Kentucky, You're Killing Me." - Thank you. This is for you, just remember that. All right. Thank you, Danny. When I wrote it, I had a premonition that we'd meet someday, that I'd meet a colonel. I feel so honored to be able to play it for you. It's really a foul song. This is a song called "Dear Kentucky, You're Killing Me." WELL, KENTUCKY, KENTUCKY WHY DO YOU WANT ME? WHY DO I LAY AT YOUR FEET? WELL, YOU KNOW I AM EASY AND POROUS FOR WHISKEY ARREST ME AND PUT ME TO SLEEP WELL, KENTUCKY, KENTUCKY YOU MAKE IT SO EASY KENTUCKY, YOU'RE KILLING ME WELL, NOW SMOKING IS SEXY AND CIGARETTES HAUNT ME SWEET LITTLE SOUTHERN DREAMS ASHTRAYS ARE SMILING AS I TRY TO FILL THEM A HAND THAT SHE WINS EVERY TIME WELL, KENTUCKY, KENTUCKY YOU MAKE IT SO EASY KENTUCKY, YOU'RE KILLING ME DEAR KENTUCKY YOU'RE KILLING ME WELL NOW, WHAT WERE YOU AFTER NOW I'M A DISASTER WHO NEEDS LOOKING AFTER LET'S HANG FROM THE RAFTERS AND SING WELL, KENTUCKY, KENTUCKY WHY DO YOU WANT ME? WHY DO I LAY AT YOUR FEET? ALL THIS TALK ABOUT BLUE GRASS AND I'M SEEING GREEN IN LEXINGTON I WAS OBSCENE KENTUCKY, KENTUCKY YOU MAKE IT SO EASY KENTUCKY, YOU'RE KILLING ME DEAR KENTUCKY YOU'RE KILLING ME DEAR KENTUCKY YOU'RE KILLING ME (cheers and applause) - All right. We got some folks from Kentucky out there. Just excited to go home. This is a song that I wrote for a friend, a not-so-dear friend, in Rockford, Illinois. This is a song called "The All Time Loser." I WAS TAKING YOU OUT FOR A NIGHT ON THE TOWN BEEN FEEDING YOU LINES I'M A LION ON THE PROWL BEEN WAITING TO STRIKE I'M A MATCH THAT WILL NEVER BURN OUT WELL, YOU TOOK ME TO TASK WELL, LOOK WHO'S NOT COMING BACK YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER AND YOU'VE HIT AN ALL TIME LOW WHEN THE PHONE RINGS I JUST LET IT KEEP ON AND ALL THE LETTERS YOU'RE SENDING WELL, THEY ALL GET RETURNED IS THIS NEVER ENDING? WILL YOU EVER LEARN? THIS IS AN ORDER OF THE RESTRAINING KIND YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER AND YOU'VE HIT AN ALL TIME LOW I'LL BE WAITING ALL ALONE I'LL BE WAITING ALL ALONE (vocalizing) YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER YOU'RE THE ALL TIME LOSER AND YOU'VE HIT AN ALL TIME LOW I'LL BE WAITING ALL ALONE I'LL BE WAITING I'LL BE WAITING ALL ALONE I'LL BE WAITING I'LL BE WAITING ALL ALONE I'LL BE WAITING I'LL BE WAITING ALL ALONE (applause) Two more? This is a song called "Rusted Hearts." And we've got one more, a bonus track. RUSTED HEARTS LIKE EMPTY SHOPPING CARTS WAS THAT ANY WAY TO START? WELL I KNEW WHAT YOU SAID TO ME WAS TRUE MY HEART DEFLATED LIKE BALLOONS IF I COME CRAWLING BACK TO YOU WOULD YOU TAKE AS I AM? WOULD PLAY ME FOR A FOOL? THEN I GET PLAYED LIKE AN ORCHESTRA PLAYS A TUNE AN ORCHID THAT BLOOMS I WOULD FLOWER FOR YOU THEN THE FOOTSTEPS RANG LIKE EVERYTHING HAD GONE SILENT LIKE IF CHARLIE CHAPLIN SANG IF I COME CRAWLING BACK TO YOU WOULD YOU TAKE ME AS I AM? WOULD PLAY ME FOR A FOOL?
