These young musicians from Chicago blend rap, rhythm, horns and guitars, crafting what they call, “Traphouse Rock.” The group’s 2012 debut record, “Traphouse Rock,” was produced by WILCO’S Jeff Tweedy. The recording stunned critics with its maturity, range and rawness. It shocked marketers, too - that’s because the band offers the release as a download completely free of charge.

>> Nice, that's real nice, Vic. That's real nice >> Thank you. >> 30 Minute Music Hour, Kids These Days from Chicago. If you're watching online live on January 26, they're at Frozen Fest tonight at the High Noon in Madison. So if you're within driving distance, walking distance, flying distance to Madison, you gonna want to go to that. I think it's probably going to sell out, so you're gonna want to get on top of that. If you're watching in March when it's on TV, sorry for the confusion. I hope you're enjoying the nicer weather. See you then. Some of these tracks are from the first project, and some of them that we're hearing today are from Traphouse Rock, that's the new downloadable record that was recorded in Louisiana and in Chicago, right? >> Texas and Chicago. > Yeah. Jeff Tweedy oversaw the Chicago production, of Wilco? >> Yeah. >> What was it like working with him? >> That was a crazy experience. None of us had ever worked with a producer with the band before, so, you know, it's like, our first experience on having outside input really, in our songwriting process. It just open our eyes so much to how songs really are made, and can be made. You know, 'cause Jeff, he's a genius, but he's, like, a twisted, evil genius. >> So a good match. >> Yeah, I mean, in a positive way. It's like, he just brought out a lot of different things that we hadn't originally conceived but, you know, made a lot of sense. >> So it was like, you realized that you were kind of left to your own devices, that got you so far, but with a real smart producer in it made a lot of difference. >> Definitely. >> Is he a demanding guy? >> Nah, he's really cool. He was really laid back. He's not a pushy dude or anything. But it's like, we all respect him so much, and just, you know, admire his music and his sensibilities. When he had an idea, it's like, that's what we're going to do. >> It seems like that his presence on Chicago-- It's a tight music scene in the big city of Chicago, isn't it? >> Yeah. >> People are in and out of each other's projects and so on? >> Yeah, definitely. >> Traphouse Rock, as I mentioned, is downloadable. A lot of people wonder, because you can download it for free. 15 tracks, right? It's still downloadable free, right? >> Yeah. >> What's up with that, with giving it out? >> I think the music industry is in, not really a strange place, but just a different place. I mean, we're all kids that grew up with the internet. And we know that music-- music to me, unless I choose for it not to be, is free. You know? It was a decision just based on where we were and are, or at that point, you know, where we were in our career and how recognized we were. We decided that putting it out for free would be the best move. >> Well, it came out right at a busy time last summer and this fall. So much cool exposure, being on Conan. What was that like? Macie Stewart, on keys everybody. What was it like doing the big Conan show? >> Conan was really cool, because it was at the Chicago Theater which is in Chicago, so we've seen the Chicago Theater as it normally is. They changed it all to be the Conan set for a day. It looked completely different. It was really cool. And it was just nice to be able to play on stage. Like first time TV, I think, big TV exposure. >> Right, I'll bet that was exciting. As well as the big festivals, Lollapalooza, Summerfest. The music is-- When you hear it live you feel like you want it to be live, or you want to experience it live. Is it a big difference playing in a TV studio verses a huge festival, Liam? >> I don't know. I enjoy every different setting. It's like a new challenge. You know? Like, you know, if we're on the road or something, maybe I'll bring more tools to use to my disposal. In some venues that doesn't work, so I have to make it work. Like, I don't know. I like being thrown into different situations and, like, making the best show I can in the venue that I'm in. >> Well, thanks for coming to this venues. Here's more music from Kids These Days. Thanks a lot. Darlin' I still love you Oh Darlin', I still love you
