Katie Powderly is a Madison-based singer/songwriter who spent the past winter in Knoxville, Tenn. That's where she crafted and recorded the lovely songs on her forthcoming CD. Her music is reminiscent of 1970s country music, but with a power pop thrust that comes compliments of a killer four-piece band and their arrangements.

Katie Powderly
(city traffic noise) It's the 30 Minute Music Hour. I'm Andy Moore. Tonight, from Madison, Wisconsin, by way of New York State, with a touch of Tennessee, here's Katie Powderly. THE BARROOM LIGHTS STILL TWINKLE AND SHINE JUST LIKE THEY DID WHEN YOU WERE MINE BUT THOSE DAYS HAVE COME AND THOSE DAYS HAVE PASSED BUT THE MEN HERE STILL WINK AND ASK ME TO DANCE AND WHILE WE WHIRL WHISPER WORDS OF ROMANCE THEY ASK ME "SWEET BABY WHAT'S THAT SAD LOOK IN YOUR EYES?" I'M TIRED OF BEING SO STRONG I WANT SOMEONE TO CARRY ME BUT DON'T YOU BETRAY ME AND DECIDE THAT YOU WANT TO MARRY ME ALL I'M ASKIN' FROM YOU IS FOR YOU TO HOLD ME AND WHEN YOU REALIZE THAT I'M LEAVING DON'T SAY "SHE NEVER TOLD ME" BUT THINGS JUST DON'T SEEM TO WORK OUT THAT WAY THEY ALWAYS COME LOOKING FOR MORE THE NEXT DAY THEY'RE ASKING FOR SOMETHING THAT I JUST CAN'T GIVE SOME BIDE THEIR TIME CONVINCED THAT I'LL CHANGE SOME SAY FOR A WOMAN I ACT AWFUL STRANGE BUT THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND ME AND THEY NEVER WILL I'M TIRED OF BEING SO STRONG I WANT SOMEONE TO CARRY ME BUT DON'T YOU BETRAY ME AND DECIDE THAT YOU WANT TO MARRY ME ALL I'M ASKIN' FROM YOU IS FOR YOU TO HOLD ME AND WHEN YOU REALIZE THAT I'M LEAVING DON'T SAY "SHE NEVER TOLD ME" THERE'S ONLY ONE MAN WHO HAS HAD MY HEART AND WHEN IT GOT BROKEN I GUESS I GOT SMART I SAID I'LL BE DAMNED IF I DO THAT AGAIN I'M TIRED OF BEING SO STRONG I WANT SOMEONE TO CARRY ME BUT DON'T YOU BETRAY ME AND DECIDE THAT YOU WANT TO MARRY ME ALL I'M ASKIN' FROM YOU IS FOR YOU TO HOLD ME AND WHEN YOU REALIZE THAT I'M LEAVING DON'T SAY "SHE NEVER TOLD ME" BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT I TOLD YOU (cheers and applause) Aw, thank you. That's a song called "Carry Me, Hold Me" with a comma. I like to put commas in my song titles for some reason. I don't know why. But, people bring it up to me. We're going to do a single-word title song. It's called "Blue." (tuning guitar) I tune because I care about you. I would never do you like that. Okay. Begin? All right. I WROTE A SONG FOR YOU YOU SANG IT BACK TO ME WORD FOR WORD YOU'RE JUST LIKE A BIRD IN THE SPRING I SHUT MY WINDOWS 'CAUSE IT'S TOO MUCH I CAN FEEL YOUR TOUCH AGAINST MY SKIN I LET YOU IN WE KEEP IN TOUCH BECAUSE IT MAKES OUR GOODBYES LESS ABRUPT AND OUR MEMORIES LESS LIKE DREAMS YOU SEND ME LINES FROM FROM TIME TO TIME FROM WHERE YOU ARE YOU'RE ALWAYS TOO FAR AWAY FROM ME IT'S WILLIE NELSON AND STORMY NIGHTS AND THAT DRESS YOU LIKE MY SUNGLASSES, TOO I WEAR FOR YOU WE KEEP IN TOUCH BECAUSE IT MAKES OUR GOODBYES LESS ABRUPT AND OUR MEMORIES LESS LIKE DREAMS YOU KNOW MY DADDY HE GETS SO MAD WHEN YOU MAKE ME SAD BUT I CHOOSE YOU I CHOOSE BLUE WE KEEP IN TOUCH BECAUSE IT MAKES OUR GOODBYES LESS ABRUPT AND OUR MEMORIES LESS LIKE DREAMS WE KEEP IN TOUCH BECAUSE IT MAKES OUR GOODBYES LESS ABRUPT AND OUR MEMORIES LESS LIKE DREAMS Thank you. I was gonna do some kind of like high kick jump combo, and then I realized I'm wearing a dress, and that wouldn't be very lady. This next song is called "Lullabye" with an "e" at the end of it. I wrote this for my best friend's 3-year-old son. His name is Wes, and I'd like to dedicate it to him right now. He's the first person-- He told me when he was 2 years old, he's like, "I think you should record a CD that's just Katie Powderly singing." So I did. The whole album is actually dedicated to him. He's my little pal. This song, I think it's going to make sense to him right now, but I hope it makes a lot more sense to him later on in the road. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND DRIFT AWAY DON'T YOU FEAR THE DARK OF NIGHT THE SETTING OF THE SUN ALLOWS THE MOON TO SHED ITS LIGHT WHEN THE MOON PLAYS HIDE AND SEEK YOU CAN ALWAYS SPY A STAR TO GIVE YOU A PLAYFUL WINK SHOW YOU EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE BUT IF YOUR STAR SHOULD FALL AND YOU FIND YOUR FRIENDS ARE GONE JUST HUG YOUR KNEES A LITTLE TIGHTER AND WAIT PATIENTLY FOR DAWN IT WON'T BE DARK FOR LONG WHEN YOUR EYES FINALLY OPEN I'LL BE SO VERY FAR FROM HERE I TOLD THE BREEZE TO SAY I LOVE YOU WHEN SHE WHISPERS IN YOUR EAR That was "Lullabye" with an "e". Hey, Andy, how's it going? - Great. Welcome, thank you. Thank you for having us. It's an honor. Why don't you introduce us? Introduce the band for us, would you? These are my favorite musicians in the whole town. This is Josh Harty on guitar. I don't think you've ever met him before, and he's certainly never been, I don't know, on this show. Josh has done his own episode, and is a go-to guitar player in this part of the world. Yeah, and this is my friend, Ben Wolf. Brian Knapp. And Nick Brown. And you guys sound so great together. All these songs are part of a new project. And are most of your players here on some of those cuts? Not everyone. Brian and Ben and I, and then some other guys from around town. I've known Katie for a long time. I'm kind of like her goofy-ass uncle, I almost feel like. But you have come such a distance from your days playing stand-up bass in a bluegrass band. And it's so exciting. - Thank you. You are a huge inspiration to me. Well, did you hear that folks? Andy Moore inspired me! Well, anyway, it's such a treat to hear you now. I'm hoping we have time for two more songs. This is the world's fastest interview, because I know the audience wants more music. Sure, okay, great. We're going to do this song in the key of A. I like to call it the key of two. That's my very-- That's my musician speak. That's some lingo. This is a song called "Tables, Turning." It's another song with a comma in the title. I CAN'T WIN THIS GAME WE'RE PLAYING I LAY DOWN ALL MY CARDS EVERY SINGLE TIME THERE'S NOTHING IN MY HANDS BUT STILL I'M GRASPING HOPING FOR ANOTHER SIGN YOU ARE SECRET CODES I MUST INTERPRET YOU SCATTER CLUES AROUND FOR ME TO SEE ON HANDS AND KNEES I CRAWL PICKING UP PIECES STILL CONVINCED THAT I'M LUCKY I GET SO TIRED WAITING FOR THESE TABLES TO TURN YOU ARE A LESSON I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO LEARN YOU SELDOM ASK FOR WHAT YOU REALLY WANT INSTEAD, EXPECTING ME TO READ YOUR MIND THIS GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE JUST LEAVES ME EMPTY WHILE YOU ARE LEAVING ME BEHIND I CLING TO EVERY LITTLE THING YOU OFFER COMFORTING MYSELF WITH EVERY WORD I SEARCH FOR SIGNS IN SONGS BUT COME UP EMPTY 'CAUSE I CAN NEVER QUITE BE SURE I GET SO TIRED WAITING FOR THESE TABLES TO TURN YOU ARE A LESSON I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO LEARN COMPETING FOR YOUR HEART I AM YOUR CAPTIVE BURSTING INTO FLAMES OF JEALOUSY SO I GIVE YOU MORE THAN WHAT YOU ASK FOR EXCEPT THE CHANCE TO MISS ME I GET SO TIRED WAITING FOR THESE TABLES TO TURN YOU ARE A LESSON I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO LEARN (applause) Thank you. Thank you so much. We've got one last song for you. This is called "All the King's Horses." This is going to be on the new record that's called "Slips of the Tongue." It's like what just slips out when you're not really trying to be guarded. YOU THINK I'M LOOKING FOR THE SUN YOU SAY I SEE IT IN YOUR EYES BUT I'M A LANGUAGE YOU DON'T SPEAK YOU UNDERESTIMATE ME ALL THE TIME IT'S ALWAYS RAINING IN MY ROOM THE CLOUDS CAME UP FROM TENNESSEE BUT STILL I LET YOU INTO MY HEAD I LIKE IT WHEN YOU'RE ALL AROUND ME YOU THINK THAT I'M LOOKING FOR THE SUN YOU'RE NOT MY REDEMPTION YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE FOR ME BUT YOU REFUSE TO SEE YOU KEEP YOUR CARDS CLOSE TO YOUR CHEST YOU THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU LAY ONE DOWN YOU THINK I SEE JUST WHAT YOU SHOW ME BUT, BABY I GOT CARDS OF MY OWN LIKE HUMPTY DUMPTY YOU FELL DOWN BROKE INTO PIECES OF A MAN THAT NO ONE COULD PUT BACK AGAIN NOT EVEN THE KING'S HORSES HIS MEN YOU THINK THAT I'M LOOKING FOR THE SUN YOU'RE NOT MY REDEMPTION YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE FOR ME BUT YOU REFUSE TO SEE THAT I'M BROKEN JUST LIKE YOU AND I CAN'T UNDO THE DAMAGE DONE I HAVE CRIED INFINITE TEARS I'M IN LOVE BUT I'M SO TIRED OF WAITING FOR ALL THESE YEARS 'CAUSE HE MAY NEVER COME AROUND NOW YOU AND I ARE SAID AND DONE AND WE BOTH LOST THE GAMES YOU PLAYED SO GO AND LEAVE ME IN THE SPRING I'M NOT THE KIND OF GIRL WHO WANTS A RING YOU THINK THAT I'M LOOKING FOR THE SUN YOU'RE NOT MY REDEMPTION YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE FOR ME BUT YOU REFUSE TO SEE Thank you.
