I got it. - Thanks, buddy. What motivates you, Stokes? - Motivation. Um... I come from the south side of Chicago, right? And there is a sea of people that have no idea what the world is like beyond the south side of Chicago. So it's important that I continue to be a conveyor of not just the truth, but also the message that's outside of our community. When I go back I feel as though it's my obligation to bring back knowledge and culture and a diversity and education. Like a messenger. - Correct, exactly. So that's probably my most fundamental motivation. You spoke to your journey from Chicago to Madison on the first track that you did tonight. - Yes. And that was some broken field running, wasn't it? It was, it was. My mother... hasn't been educated beyond high school. But for a 27-year-old woman to take six kids from the south side of Chicago and bring them to Madison, Wisconsin was just absolutely genius beyond comprehension. I salute her for that. - What drew her to Madison? She wanted a better life and Madison wasn't extremely far from Chicago. You were eleven or twelve then? - Yeah, just about. And then, is this where you got into the hip-hop scene? Well, I was always into hip-hop. Ya know, I had a cousin who lives in Atlanta now and he was my first introduction into hip-hop. He was the biggest Ice Cube fan, so I became an Ice Cube fan as well. In that first cut, you spoke very specifically about your time at the shelter and a lot of people would say that that would be a tough time, never mind what you left in Chicago. A lot of artists with backgrounds like yours choose to be pissed off and they stay that way. - Sure. When I see your crowds and hear your music, it's just uplifting and people are smiling. What saved you from getting pissed and staying pissed? Rodney saved me. I saved myself. I was always resourceful as a kid and I've always been-- just had a knack for surrounding myself with positive, upbeat people. I think that with music it's important that I'm able to provoke emotion at its absolute highest point. And if I'm not doing that, I'm not doing my job. And I can sit here and give you a sob story as to how my father's in prison for the rest of his life and therefore it's okay for me to be a felon, but that's not the story that I want to get across. My story is a story of hope, which is why my fan base, I identify with it so well, your son in particular, who I want to give a special shout out to. Riley. - How you doing, buddy? I'm super good. - Thank you so much for the support, man. You said some words earlier and that means a lot to me, so thank you. ( inaudible ) Yeah, Radish, as well. Tell us real quickly about what Radish is bringing to the art. Well, Radish helps me look good. ( all laugh ) He's young, he's fashionable. He makes me feel as though I'm a mentor to some degree. Speaking of youth, Stokes may be one of the only internationally touring rap artists who has done a new video asking people to eat their vegetables. Yeah, Super Sprowtz. That's changed my life! Real quickly. - No worries. How do you go over in Europe? How are the crowds? How did it go over in Europe? I'm asking about the crowds as much as you. Yeah, the crowds are-- Paris is interesting because they treat African Americans a bit better than they treat Africans and it's important I say this because my African brothers over there are dealing with some of the same issues that Mexicans are dealing with in America. A lot of times in Europe their first idea or concept of a black person is Michael Jordan or Jay-Z, frankly, so as an African American we go over and there's a red carpet, but for a lot of my African brothers it's a bit more difficult. Struggle's always out there, isn't it? It's always out there, though I love Paris and I love Europe as a whole. I'll continue to tour for the rest of my life.
