Nathan Houdek on coverage when there are natural disasters and complaints with the state.

Sec. Nathan Houdek:
It's really important that you talk with your agent, or, you know, shop around online to make sure you have the appropriate coverage. It can be confusing and sometimes we've been seeing home values increase quite a bit, and if a person hasn't checked their insurance coverage, they might not have a policy that covers the full value of their home or their belongings. So, it's important that you do check regularly to make sure you have the right coverage for the size of home, the value of your home, the personal belongings you own, all those types of things.

Steven Potter:
How would you define being treated fairly by an insurance company in a case where people are making claims for natural disasters, storms, tornadoes?

Sec. Nathan Houdek:
Well, the claim process after a storm comes through can be confusing for people, right? And if you feel like your insurance company or the adjuster is not treating you fairly in terms of covering things that you feel like should be covered by your policy, that's when we encourage people to contact our office to, you know, potentially file a complaint or just to ask questions about whether something is being covered appropriately or fairly.

Steven Potter:
What does a complaint lead to? What's that process like? A complaint with your office?

Sec. Nathan Houdek:
Yeah, so if somebody contacts our office and they file a complaint, there's a formal process where we'll follow up with the insurance company or with the agent. And there's a formal back-and-forth that occurs where we look into how a claim is being handled or how a policy holder is being treated, and making sure that there isn't any violation of a state law or state regulation.
