Karen Breit on work to seek support for tribal colleges and universities in Congress.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Karen Breit:
The work that we've been doing, especially in this year with the tribal colleges and universities — the majority of us belong to what is called the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. We've been doing a lot of advocacy work through them, and they do help us with lobbying and issues that are of concern to TCUs — is the acronym for that. So in addition to that, our tribal representatives, our tribal government, and, I guess, other Native organizations, national Native organizations, have done a lot of advocacy work, and it's a continual effort. It's continuous work that we do in educating people in government about us, because we're not a large segment of the population, and we do have a unique political status within this country. And every year, February, we go to the Hill — the meetings on the Hill — and we do this work. We bring students and we talk about who we are as people and why the tribal colleges and universities are important to our communities, and the impact that we have in our communities.
