Ready for Delivery

Watch Call the Midwife at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 on Wisconsin Public Television.
TV and movies would have us believe that someone within a few hundred feet of us is having a baby every few seconds. Every time I see a car pulled over on the side of the road or someone speeds past me on the freeway, I can’t help but wonder if just a few minutes earlier, someone uttered “I think my water just broke.” Of course this would inevitably have to be followed by a celebrity cameo to deliver said miracle (which they have never done before).
I much prefer the idea of a world where a large percentage of the local population has been thoroughly trained in all aspects of pregnancy. There’s just something about having someone (who actually knows what they’re doing) there on D-day that seems appealing. I mean sure, it would be a great story to tell the kids one day that they were delivered on the shoulder of I-94 in a taxi by a burly truck driver who was taking night school classes to become a nurse, but no one would believe you anyways.
I guess for now we’ll have to stick with a casual story of a hospital, a doctor, a team of well prepared nurses and plenty of anesthesia. Sigh.
