Innovating with Owls

Whether we’re talking about Christopher Robin’s pal or the mascot from the Tootsie Roll commercials, wise old owls make for pretty lovable characters. They’re fluffy, quiet and capable, making all of those dark and imposing fairytale forests just a little bit less creepy.
Owls outside of the storybooks are just as endearing. Barn or Snowy, they enthrall with their grace, beauty and weird ability to rotate their heads too far. From their precision in flight to their extraordinary senses of sight and hearing, owls are magnificent examples of design.
In new Nature episode, “Owl Power,” – premiering tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. on Wisconsin Public Television – these elegant and fierce creatures are brought into the 21st Century. Explore how owls are inspiring submarine, aircraft and even hearing aid innovations. In this clip, see a barn owl in truly silent flight, or tune in tonight for the full episode!
