Enjoying the Spring Bird Migration in Wisconsin

How many bird species have you seen this spring? Chances are you haven’t seen as many as naturalist Bill Volkert who counted 133 different bird species on one day at Horicon Marsh. Read Volkert’s journal on wpr.org where you’ll also find a list of all 133 species he saw.

One species I easily recognized this Memorial Day weekend was the Bald Eagle. They’re abundant in the Rhinelander/Eagle River area, and that’s because Wisconsin has 770 breeding pairs. See how Wisconsin ranks among other states in an interactive map of the bald eagle population compiled by PBS’ Nature.
