“I’m a private detective. The last thing I need is a public image.”

In the upcoming season of Sherlock, the great detective becomes a major celebrity on the Internet when Watson’s blog (the one he started on doctor’s orders) attracts a large following. In a case of real life mirroring fiction, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock character has become an Internet sensation of his own. Since the season debuted in the UK in January, fans of the show have rallied around the character with the #ibelieveinsherlockholmes hashtag. Search any social network – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr – and you’ll get a ton of results. Check out #ibelieveinsherlockholmes on Instagram to see just how creative people are at showing their support for Sherlock.  This blog reported on the initial wave of posters, tweets, t-shirts and the like sporting the hashtag back in February.

But let’s get back to Season 2 and the fictitious frenzy over Sherlock and Watson. It will be interesting to see how crime-fighting’s most famous couple perform their work as national celebrities. From what I understand, the fame leads to media scrutiny, which only leads to trouble for Sherlock. According to the episode three synopsis, a tabloid reporter reveals the “shocking truth” about the great detective. With the real life #ibelieveinsherlockholmes campaign erupting in the wake of this episode’s UK premiere, I’d say one thing is for certain… we’re in for a major cliff hanger at the end of Season 2.
