Cave Diving

Watch NOVA “Extreme Cave Diving” at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 on Wisconsin Public Television.
Cave diving is definitely one of those items on the bucket list for me. Ever since I’ve been able to swim, I’ve loved being in the water and grew up experimenting with ways to stay beneath the surface longer. Unfortunately, at a young age you tend to be financially limited to things like a garden hose (high-tech equipment, I know).
I’ve only had the opportunity to go snorkeling a few times in a body of water that was clear enough to actually see anything. The logical next step has always been to go through the dive certification program and start collecting all of the necessary gear – Easier said than done when you consider the cost of wet suits, tanks and the certification itself. Not to mention Wisconsin doesn’t exactly have an extensive list of great diving locations so you can tack on the cost of travel as well.
I’m not really sure what it is about being under water that’s so fascinating. It’s almost like being free from the normal world – All of the normal sounds are drowned out and give you the opportunity to focus elsewhere and when you’re not worried about your next breath of air, you can enjoy the sensation of weightlessness. Someday I’ll have the time and the money and the location all in place and make it happen. Then I just have to hope I don’t get hooked on the compressed air and weightless sensation… otherwise the next stop is space.
