American Bison

Watch Independent Lens “Facing the Storm: Story of the American Bison” at 9 p.m. Friday, April 27 on Wisconsin Public Television.
“Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam and the deer and the antelope play…” That’s what it used to be all about, not the hokey pokey (contrary to popular belief). However, you don’t see too many bison out and about these days.
Having seen herds roaming free in South Dakota, I can say first-hand that we’re missing out on some pristine scenery. Sure in Wisconsin we’ve got some nice big corn fields, cranberry marshes and even dairy cows as far as the eye can see, but it’s just not the same as big green rolling hills peppered in hundreds of bison.
Even more exciting would be to drive down the freeway in the middle of winter and see more than just snow and dead trees. Imagine a herd of furry brown bison fighting their way through a blizzard of white. Sure would make for a more interesting drive to see the family.
